On January 6, 2021, President Trump spoke to a group of supporters who were protesting perceived voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. These supporters later attacked the US Capitol to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election in favor of Joe Biden. Many considered this riot to be an attempted insurrection or coup so that Donald Trump could remain in power, despite having lost the election. Many people were arrested in connection with the riots, in which property was damaged and a law enforcement officer was killed. After Trump won the 2024 presidential election, he pardoned most of the individuals involved in these events.
