Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache series began with her debut novel, Still Life, published in 2005. The book won several awards and established Penny in the mystery genre, and although the series is often considered to fall under the cozy mystery subgenre, due to its exploration of the quirky village of Three Pines, it also incorporates elements of the police procedural and literary crime subgenres. The series follows the professional and personal life of Armand Gamache as he is promoted through the ranks of the Sûreté du Québec and tracks his subsequent demotion as he confronts the organization’s corruption. Throughout the series, Gamache is developed as a unique investigator whose methods are rooted in empathy, integrity, and a keen understanding of human flaws.

A Better Man is the 15th novel in the Chief Inspector Gamache series, and its central conflicts are rooted in events from previous books. At the start of the story, Gamache returns to the Sûreté du Québec after a nine-month suspension. Formerly the Chief Superintendent and head of the provincial police force, he has been demoted to his old position as Chief Inspector of Homicide. This demotion is a political punishment for his audacious actions in Kingdom of the Blind (2018), in which he deliberately allowed a catastrophic quantity of opioids onto the streets in a high-stakes operation to dismantle Québec’s most powerful drug cartels. Although his strategy ultimately succeeded, the immense risk involved shattered public trust and gave his political enemies an opportunity to force his resignation through humiliation. To their shock, Gamache accepted the demotion, a job the leadership knew he “could not possibly accept” (7). Gamache’s decision illustrates his characteristic humility and the guiding philosophy with which he mentors those under his command, including Jean-Guy Beauvoir and Isabelle Lacoste.
