Meg leaves Joe’s the next morning, returns home, writes a note for Claire and Bobby, and heads over to the resort campground to pick up Ali. She dreads talking to Sam but knows it’s inevitable. They share an uncomfortable exchange before Meg collects Ali, and they leave for Seattle.

Claire and Bobby fly to Kauai for their honeymoon. The beauty of the place overwhelms Claire. They settle into their rental house and take a walk on the beach. The whole day is pleasant. In bed that night, Bobby tells Claire how beautiful she is, and they have sex. Claire feels content curling up next to Bobby afterward.

Meg gives Ali a tour of Seattle. They visit the aquarium, candy shop, and movie theater. Back at the condo, they call Claire to say hi. Claire and Meg have a pleasant conversation, too. Afterward, Meg puts Ali to bed. Then she crawls into her bed and thinks about Joe, wondering if they have a future. Ali emerges from her room, interrupting Meg’s thoughts. She invites Ali to sleep in her bed with her.

In the morning, Mama calls Claire and demands that she put Bobby on the phone. Claire is annoyed, but Bobby is thrilled when Mama announces that she arranged “an audition with Kent Ames at Down Home Records” for him (288). Thrilled for Bobby, Claire agrees to extend their trip so he can travel to Nashville.

Meg enjoys her time with Ali. At the end of the week, she’s sorry to bring Ali home. She’d keep her longer given Claire’s new travel plans, but Ali has a birthday party in Hayden. After she drops her off, Meg returns to the city for a session with Harriet. She admits that she’s sad about saying goodbye to Ali and fears Claire will be too busy for her now that she’s married.

Meg returns to work. Throughout her client meetings, she feels overwhelmed by emotion. Afterward, she stands on the street, wondering if she should go to the Athenian. She remembers Joe and returns home. She’s shocked to find Elizabeth waiting for her and bursts into tears.

Chapter 23 Summary

Joe mentally prepares for his visit with Diana throughout the workday. Just as he’s packing up, Ali appears at the shop. She talks nonstop and follows him into his apartment, asking about Diana’s photos. After she leaves, he gets ready and walks over to Diana’s parents’ house. When Henry opens the door, he greets Joe warmly, thrilled that he’s home.

Meg and Elizabeth spend the night drinking and talking. Meg opens up about Claire’s wedding, her week with Ali, and her feelings for Joe. Elizabeth insists that Meg contact Joe. She says they’ll have a spa day tomorrow and spend it formulating a plan. Then Meg will drive Elizabeth to the airport and head to Hayden to see Joe. Meg isn’t sure but appreciates Elizabeth’s support.

Chapter 24 Summary

Claire attends all of Bobby’s meetings and auditions with him. During the callback session, she feels groggy, and her head hurts. When her hand starts to tingle, she dismisses herself to the hotel. Bobby insists on escorting her back and tucking her in; he wants the producers to understand his priorities.

Claire feels a little better the next morning. She’s also happy because Bobby got a contract. He promises to work with the studio to plan around their family schedule.

After Meg’s spa trip with Elizabeth, she returns to the office. Distracted by thoughts of Joe, she has her assistant find the number for Smitty’s Garage. She calls Joe, apologizes for leaving unexpectedly, and suggests they have dinner at his house tomorrow night. Afterward, a frantic Claire calls Meg. She’s at the airport but doesn’t remember getting there. She has a headache and tingles and keeps forgetting where she is and what she’s doing. Meg helps her call a taxi. Then she races to pick her up. She insists on going to the ER despite Claire’s protests.

The sisters wait a long time at the ER. When the doctor finally sees Claire, he dismisses her symptoms as stress reactions. Meg gets upset and demands to see a more experienced doctor. They’re at the hospital for several more hours. Claire gets several tests. Finally, the doctor meets with the sisters and informs Claire that she has an inoperable “mass in [her] brain” (323). Frantic and furious, Meg insists that there must be something they can do. She tells Claire they’re going to get other opinions because all that matters is saving her life.

Chapter 25 Summary

Outside the hospital, Claire feels fuzzy and strange. She can’t believe this is happening to her. Meg assures her that she’ll help her get the help she needs. She insists they’ll go to the best doctors as soon as possible and find someone who will operate. In the car, Claire makes Meg promise she won’t abandon her. Meg swears to stay by her side, especially because Claire doesn’t want to tell Sam, Ali, or Bobby what’s going on until they know more.

Joe feels positive after reuniting with Diana’s parents. He thought they’d be furious, but they welcomed him back. On his way to the barber shop, he thinks about Meg. Although Meg’s the opposite of Diana, he believes they can have a future together. After the haircut, Joe borrows Smitty’s barbecue and starts preparing for his date with Meg. He cleans up and starts cooking. He feels hopeful as he meticulously goes about his preparations. While waiting, he even packs up some of Diana’s photos. However, Meg doesn’t show up. Hours pass, and Joe goes to bed alone.

Meg and Claire spend nine days researching doctors. They do so under the guise of a sister spa trip. Despite their efforts, no one will operate. Most doctors recommend that Claire start radiation as soon as possible; if it shrinks the tumor, someone might operate. They return to Seattle and make arrangements with doctors at Swedish Hospital. Claire will start radiation tomorrow.

Back in the car, Meg and Claire discuss what Claire will tell her family. She wants to tell Ali and Sam but doesn’t want to tell Bobby. Meg insists Bobby deserves the chance to support her, but Claire is terrified of ruining his budding musical career. The sisters arrive at Claire’s. Meg agrees to pick her up later so she can talk to her family alone.

Meg drives to Joe’s and explains that she missed their date because her sister was diagnosed with cancer. She bursts into tears, and he hugs her. Inside, Joe holds Meg while she continues crying. He can’t believe he’s found himself back here. He doesn’t think he can deal with more medical and hospital stress. However, he tells Meg that the neurosurgeon at Swedish Hospital is a good doctor he knows from school. Meg is surprised but appreciates his help. After Meg leaves, Joe stares at Diana’s picture and feels her judging him. He tells her he can’t help Meg.

Back at Claire’s, Meg talks to Sam about what happened years prior. He apologizes for being so hard on Meg. He didn’t even know he had a daughter with Eliana until Meg called him. Eliana had disappeared on a shoot, leaving Meg and Claire alone. Desperate, Meg tracked down Sam’s number and drove up to Hayden. Sam let her and Claire stay, but Meg began acting out. Sam was overwhelmed and gave her an ultimatum: start behaving or leave. Meg left. In the present, Sam apologizes to Meg for all she and Claire have endured because of Eliana. Claire joins the conversation, assuring Sam and Meg that her decision not to tell Bobby is unrelated to Mama’s mistakes. Then Ali comes in and gives Claire her blanket. Claire will be spending the next month in Seattle with Meg. She has four weeks of radiation, and it’s too much to travel back and forth. Claire hugs Ali through tears.

Chapters 21-25 Analysis

Claire’s cancer diagnosis and treatment in Chapters 22-25 introduce a plot twist that disrupts the primary characters’ journeys toward Personal Growth via Facing the Past. Before Claire and Meg discover that Claire has a brain tumor, Claire, Meg, and Joe feel ready to embrace life again. Claire has just gotten married to Bobby and basks in the beauty of Kauai with her new husband. Meg spends the week in Seattle with Ali and forms an unexpected and life-giving bond with her niece; she’s meanwhile considering the possibilities of pursuing a committed relationship with Joe. Concurrently, Joe makes amends with his late wife’s parents, comes to terms with his loss, and opens himself to a new relationship with Meg. All three primary characters have a more hopeful outlook on life and themselves. When they discover that Claire has cancer, their newly balanced circumstances are disrupted once more, forcing them to seek out love, healing, and growth in new and challenging ways.

The characters’ responses to Claire’s diagnosis further illustrate the Complexities of Love in Various Forms. As soon as Claire calls Meg to say she needs help, Meg rushes to her side and takes charge. While Claire knows “she should be angry” at Meg for “being herself—pushing in where she [doesn’t] belong”—in reality, she doesn’t “want to be alone” (317). She’s glad that Meg is by her side and makes her promise that she won’t abandon her during her recovery process. Claire’s illness overturns Claire’s sense of a happy, idyllic future with her new family, but it also offers her and Meg a chance to fully amend their relationship. In this time of crisis, Meg has the chance to prove herself to her sister again. “I’ve let you down in the past,” Meg tells her sister, “but none of that matters now. From this second on, all that matters is your life” (324). Claire’s diagnosis grants Meg perspective. She pursues personal and sororal healing by letting go of the past and focusing on the present. She knows she can be strong, and in this scenario, she is strong for her sister. Furthermore, Claire’s illness compels the sisters to spend protracted amounts of time together. They travel for over a week seeking the best medical care for Claire. Then they make plans to spend the next month together at Meg’s Seattle condo. These circumstantial arrangements challenge the sisters to spend concentrated time in each other’s company, get to know each other as adults, and put their hurts behind them to focus on the future. The sisters are learning that fostering real familial love means setting aside their frustrations to support and rely on each other.

Joe’s character is compelled to reevaluate his definition of love throughout these chapters, too. At the start of the excerpt, Joe feels happy and hopeful. “The meeting with Diana’s parents [has] released something in him. Not the guilt, or not all of it, certainly, but their […] understanding” has “eased his burdens” (328). He therefore feels ready to let Meg into his heart and his life. However, Joe hesitates to fully do so when he learns that Meg’s sister is sick. He puts his emotional needs before Meg’s, afraid to involve himself in a situation that so closely resembles his late wife’s illness. He doesn’t believe that he’s ready to sacrifice his stability to support Meg and thus feels himself immediately withdrawing from their burgeoning dynamic. His emotional experience shows how love challenges him to put aside his pain and discomfort for the sake of someone in need. While Meg is learning to do just that, Joe is unsure if he’s capable.

The characters’ individual and concurrent emotional challenges further their Pursuit of Forgiveness and Reconciliation. Claire is learning to let her sister into her heart and life again because she realizes that she’s in need and can’t face her cancer diagnosis alone. Meg is learning to make room for Claire and her family in her life despite her historical distrust of traditional family structures. She is also vulnerable with Joe about Claire’s situation, which shows that she’s growing and changing. Meanwhile, Joe’s difficult conversations with his loved ones show him that forgiveness might be possible after all—even if it’s an ongoing journey.
