The Flesh and Fire series is a set of four books by American author Jennifer L. Armentrout. They are romantasy novels, a modern genre that blends the traditional “romance” and “fantasy” genres, while often containing more explicit sexual and violent scenes aimed at adult audiences. The series consists of four books: A Shadow in the Ember (2021), A Light in the Flame (2022), A Fire in the Flesh (2023), and Born of Blood and Ash (2024). They are described by Armentrout as a prequel or spin-off series from her bestselling Blood and Ash series, as they take place in the same realm thousands of years before the Flesh and Fire series. The primary protagonist of the Blood and Ash series is Penellaphe “Poppy” Balfour, a direct descendant of Sera and Ash.
A Shadow in the Ember introduces Princess Seraphine “Sera” Mierel, a mortal princess who is destined to become the Consort of the Primal of Death, Nyktos (Ash). Throughout her life, she is trained to kill Nyktos, hoping that his death will bring about an end to the Rot, a spreading disease of the land that is destroying crops and sending the mortal land into famine. However, when she meets Ash in his human form, the two build a friendship and then a romance, and Ash takes her to his home in the Shadowlands. There, she learns that Ash’s uncle, Kolis, killed his twin brother and Ash’s father, Eythos, to seize power as the Primal of Life. However, before he died, Eythos put the embers of life—his source of power as the Primal of Life—into Sera’s bloodline along with the soul of Kolis’s true love, Sotoria. This makes Sera the true Primal of Life and the only one who can usurp Kolis and stop his corruption and brutal rule. At the end of the first novel, Sera learns these facts when they fend off an attack from Kolis on the Shadowlands, with the Arae (Fates) emphasizing the importance of Sera’s survival to bring balance back to the realm.
In the second novel, A Light in the Flame, Sera’s fate hinges on her relationship with Ash. Because he had his kardia, a part of his soul, removed, Ash is incapable of love, yet Sera’s survival and her Ascension to Primal of Life hinges on true love from a Primal. Their other option, to remove the embers of life from Sera, seems equally impossible, but they search for a way to do so. At the same time, Ash and Sera decide to follow through with Sera’s Coronation as Ash’s wife, presenting a united front to the Shadowlands while hiding Sera’s true identity. When Kilos learns of their union, he summons them to his court, where he goads Sera and Ash and forces Sera to kill a draken, positioning Kilos as the series’ primary antagonist. The Shadowlands are attacked by the forces of Kyn and Attes, two Primals who seemed to have aligned themselves with Kolis. To save her new friends and family, Sera goes with Attes to Dalos, Kolis’s kingdom, to willingly turn herself over to him. Just as Kolis is about to kill her, however, Sotoria’s soul speaks through her, staying Kolis’s hand as he sees the potential to reunite with his true love.
A Fire in the Flesh, the third novel, begins with Ash’s imprisonment as he tries to save Sera from Kolis. Attes visits Sera in her cage, informing her that he only worked against her and Ash in an effort to maintain peace in the realm. He is truly aligned with her, as he provides her with information about Ash and about Sotoria. Sera learns that she is not truly Sotoria reborn, yet her soul is trapped inside of her. She hides this fact from Kolis, instead pretending to be Sotoria, which leads Kolis to have violent swings from being attentive and caring to abusive and violent. Sera then learns of the Star diamond, which Kolis used to imprison Eythos’s soul. She draws on the embers of life to attack Kolis, stabbing him with the bone of an Ancient and sending him into stasis, then freeing herself and Ash. They free Eythos’s soul from the Star diamond and put Sotoria’s within to protect her from Kolis. However, with Sera near death, Ash risks the realm to Ascend her to Primal, succeeding and proving that he truly loves her.
In the final novel, Sera must reckon with what it means to be the true Primal of Life. This fact incurs the wrath of Kolis while risking the destruction of the realm because of the imbalance it creates. At the same time, Sera must learn to temper her anger and violence seen in the other novels, taking on the responsibility of the gods, Primals, and draken that align themselves with her and Ash, and learning how to truly rule. Several characters return in the final book, including Kolis, who continues to serve as the primary antagonist, as well as Kyn and Veses, the Primals who align themselves with him. Meanwhile, Sera grows closer with Nektas, the oldest draken in the realm and one of Ash’s closest advisors, as well as the gods Aios and Rhain. The novel emphasizes the importance of the Ancients and the Arae, largely unseen forces that insist on balance within the realm, continuing themes of fate, destiny, and identity that are touched on in previous novels. At the center of it, Sera completes her journey toward autonomy and the fulfillment of her true destiny, bringing corruption and violence under control to save the realm.
