The story follows Aria Scuderi, the daughter of a high-ranking member of the Chicago Outfit, who is forced into an arranged marriage with Luca Vitiello, the fearsome future head of the New York Famiglia. The novel explores themes of Duty and Honor as Mechanisms of Control, The Desire to Protect Loved Ones From Danger, and Individual Capacity for Both Brutality and Tenderness.
German author Cora Reilly is a USA Today best-selling author known for her dark romance novels featuring powerful anti-heroes, a niche she helped popularize in the self-published market. Before finding success in romance, she was a traditionally published author of young adult fiction. Bound by Honor exemplifies the key conventions of the mafia romance subgenre, including an arranged marriage, a dangerous male protagonist, and an innocent heroine. The series gained significant popularity through word-of-mouth on social media, becoming a foundational work in the BookTok phenomenon and leading to several spin-off series, including The Camorra Chronicles and Sins of the Fathers.

Aria Scuderi is the beautiful daughter of the second-in-command of the Chicago Outfit (the branch of the Mafia active in Chicago). Aria enjoys a privileged and sheltered childhood with her younger siblings: Gianna, Liliana, and Fabiano. Her father loyally serves Fiore Cavallaro, the head of the Chicago Outfit. When Aria is 15, she is informed that she is going to be married to Luca Vitiello. Luca is the eldest son of Salvatore Vitiello, head of the New York Famiglia. While historically the two branches have been enemies, the marriage is intended to consolidate power against rival organizations like the Russian Bratva and the Taiwanese Triad. The marriage will take place as soon as she turns 18.
Aria is very distressed by this news because Luca has a reputation for brutal violence. She meets her fiancé for the first time two months later, when Luca comes to attend the engagement party. He is cold and aloof, which increases her fearfulness about the impending marriage. Tensions quickly emerge between Luca and Aria’s younger sister, Gianna, who is outspoken and protective. Gianna catches the eye of Luca’s younger brother, Matteo, who has also come to visit. During the visit, Gianna and Aria witness Luca’s violence and jealousy firsthand when he accuses Raffaele (one of their cousins who regularly acts as a bodyguard) of being sexually interested in Aria. Luca cuts off Raffaele’s finger.
A few months after Aria’s 18th birthday, she and her family travel to New York for the wedding. Aria is terrified of marrying a man whom she perceives as ruthless and cruel; she is particularly fearful of being forced to have sex with him. At her bridal shower, Luca’s stepmother, Nina, explains the Sicilian tradition of the “presentation of the sheets” (56), where the bloody bedsheets are displayed as proof of consummation and the bride’s purity, deeply unsettling Aria. On the wedding day, Aria learns that one of Luca’s former lovers, Grace Parker, is a guest. During the reception, Grace whispers a cruel warning, claiming Luca will be a brutal lover. The evening ends with the crowd following the couple to their bedroom, chanting for Luca to “bed her.”
However, when Luca and Aria are alone on their wedding night, he seems unsettled by her obvious fearfulness. He cuts his arm to stain the sheets with his blood, faking the consummation. The next morning, they maintain the lie as the women of the family collect the sheets. Aria secretly tells Gianna the truth. After the wedding, Aria’s family leaves, and she and Luca begin their new life together in his luxurious New York penthouse. Luca shows a few glimpses of kindness, but Aria is mostly bored and lonely. She has no one to spend time with except her bodyguard, Romero.
Luca’s cousin Cosima, a friend of Grace’s, secretly gives Aria a key and an address, urging her to see what Luca is really up to. At the address, Aria finds Luca having sex with Grace Parker, who smiles triumphantly at her. Aria flees and, after a volatile confrontation, Luca apologizes and promises to be faithful. Their relationship slowly builds as he teaches her self-defense. They make a deal that if she lets him touch her, Gianna can visit, leading to increasing sexual experimentation and eventually to mutual masturbation, establishing physical intimacy without intercourse.
When Gianna visits, her provocative nature clashes with Matteo, who shows a persistent interest in her. Against Luca’s orders, Aria and Gianna go to one of his clubs. Luca finds them, and he and Aria dance passionately. However, Aria spots Grace at the club. A man named Rick drugs Aria’s drink and attempts to abduct her. Luca’s men intervene, and Luca tortures and kills Rick. A drugged Aria confesses her love for Luca and reveals Grace’s threat from the wedding. The next morning, Luca realizes Grace orchestrated the attack. After Gianna leaves, Aria and Luca have sex for the first time. Though it is painful for Aria, Luca is unexpectedly gentle. Afterward, he confides in her about his mother’s suicide.
Weeks later, a devastated Gianna calls to say their father has betrothed her to Matteo, a deal Luca knew about. Aria confronts Luca, and they have a terrible fight. Days later, Luca returns home covered in blood after losing men in a Bratva attack. They have rough sex, during which Aria admits that she is frustrated by the experience of loving a man who does not return her feelings. The next morning, Luca reveals that his father, Salvatore, has been assassinated by the Bratva.
At Salvatore’s funeral, Luca is now the Capo dei Capi. For safety, he sends Aria and her siblings to the Vitiello mansion in the Hamptons, which is then attacked by the Bratva. A sniper kills Aria’s cousin Umberto. While Romero secures Liliana and Fabiano in a panic room, Aria and Gianna are captured by the Russians. Luca and Matteo arrive, and Luca drops his weapons to save Aria. Aria creates a diversion by stabbing her captor, and in the ensuing firefight, she is shot in the shoulder while killing a man who was aiming at Luca.
As Aria recovers, she tells Luca she killed a man without remorse. He asks why she took a bullet for him, and she reaffirms her love. Luca confesses that while love is a weakness a Capo cannot afford, he loves her too, admitting she is his first choice, even over the Famiglia. Their bond solidified, they make love, and they accept their dangerous future together.
