In the room, she’s horrified to discover Dominic is the customer. She doesn’t want to take his money but gives him the dance anyway. The two end up engaging in sexual foreplay and Ally brings Dominic to climax. She leaves immediately afterward.

Thrilled, she pays Deena and leaves feeling excited for her new personal assistant position.

Chapters 32-46 Analysis

As Ally and Dominic’s sexually heated dynamic transitions into a more emotional bond, the novel considers Communication and Vulnerability in Relationships. At this juncture of the novel, Ally and Dominic are not dating. However, they are forced to spend increasing amounts of time when Dominic sends his assistant Greta on an overseas trip and hires Ally as his new personal assistant. This vocational arrangement changes the parameters and stakes of their professional relationship. As a result, they must work out how to communicate and be open with each other in a healthy manner. Having learned about Ally’s financial troubles after the club outing, Dominic uses the PA job to help Ally—but he doesn’t articulate his intentions to her. Ally accepts the job because she’s trying to maintain her father’s care and support herself—but she doesn’t overtly express these concerns to Dominic. Both characters thus struggle to share their respective situations in an adult manner, adding tension to their already fraught connection.

The novel uses dialogue to underscore the importance of Communication and Vulnerability in Relationships. As Ally and Dominic share difficult details about their lives, they must overcome each other’s reticence and tendency toward secrecy and self-protection. Their conversation at Dominic’s house after the club reveals the difficulties of achieving openness. The way that Ally speaks to Dominic in this scene reveals her frustration with Dominic’s withholding tendencies and dichotomous behaviors:

You say you care about me. You’re obviously attracted to me. And as much as you bitch and moan about me ruining your life, I think you actually like me. But not enough to want to be with me. And because of that, I can’t trust you, Dominic. I’m not going to open up and share my life story with you. You haven’t earned that access (246).

Ally uses a direct tone, using simple language and short sentences to convey her anger. She refuses to disguise how Dominic’s behavior is impacting her emotionally. Even as she acknowledges her interest in Dominic, she doesn’t want to compromise her emotional stability to appease him. Understanding that healthy relationships are fostered through mutual trust and reciprocity, Ally doesn’t want “to open up and share my life story” because Dominic has consistently refused to be open with her. This scene marks a change in the tenor of the protagonists’ relationship; they are situated in a private setting and speaking more colloquially. Outside the confines of the workplace, they don’t have to tailor their language to the professional sphere. They’re able to be more real with each other—something Ally embraces but Dominic is still learning.

As the novel more frequently uses the setting of Dominic’s house, it chronicles how Dominic begins Overcoming Personal Demons more overtly. After the Christian James event, for example, Ally takes Dominic home. Dominic is drunk, which softens his otherwise callous exterior. The “home field” advantage conferred by the setting—in tandem with the alcohol he’s consumed—makes him open with Ally for the first time, explaining his real reasons for refusing to have sex with her. In admitting that he’s afraid of being his father, Dominic takes a step toward processing his anger at his father’s actions and their repercussions. In revealing this vulnerability he is bonding with Ally. The intimacy of the home space thus encourages the characters to pursue new levels of trust in their relationship.

As Ally and Dominic learn to communicate more honestly, their enemies-to-lovers dynamic shifts from antagonism to companionability. The more they learn about each other, the more invested they become in one another’s lives. The novel thus suggests that when two people confide in one another, hatred can develop into affection, foreshadowing continued developments in Ally and Dominic’s complex relationship.
