Cam puts her finger in Howie’s mouth to soothe him and keep him quiet. Suddenly, she hears a sound from behind her and sees a policeman in the window, gesturing for her to come out through the window. Cam and Howie escape through the window and find Eric waiting with the policeman. Cam is relieved that the police have surrounded the house. After the police call out to the thieves on their megaphone, the criminals come out and surrender.
The police compliment Cam’s strong memory and thank her for her work. They explain that the thieves’ trick almost worked, as Mr. Parker only saw one thief—not the mustached man, but the other man who pretended to be with his family. Cam, Eric, and Howie go back to the mall and reunite with Eric’s mother. The police officer calls Cam and Eric “heroes” for cracking the case. When one of the older ladies suggests that they find the young couple and reassure them that the thieves have been caught, Cam and Eric laugh.
In the final chapters, the author builds tension in the story, centering on Cam’s moment-to-moment experiences until she is finally rescued by a police officer.
