She begs him to help her, suddenly confused as to where she is and what’s happening. She realizes she isn’t in a fairy tale and that Lex is the big bad wolf. However, she blames herself, too. Her friend takes her out of the building and shepherds her elsewhere. She finds herself in a warm bed, regretting everything.

Chapters 37-47 Analysis

In the final chapters of the novel, Charlie’s happily-ever-after ending with Lex is thwarted by deception and betrayal. In the contemporary romance tradition, most romantic counterparts end up in a committed, happy relationship by the novel’s end. Chasing Love is a dark romance novel that subverts expectations of the contemporary romance genre. Secrets and lies upset the characters’ conventional romantic fantasies. Instead of allowing Charlie and Lex to ride off into the proverbial sunset together, the author closes the novel on a twist ending. Charlie and Lex get married in a last-minute, romantic setting in the Hamptons. Charlie is momentarily convinced that she has realized the “most beautiful dream where [she] just took the biggest leap of faith known to mankind” (510). However, her idyllic, fairy-tale ending is immediately overturned when she discovers that Lex has in fact been with Victoria Preston for some time. This plot twist disrupts Charlie’s chances at love, happiness, and hope and plunges her back into a despairing state of mind. By placing this unexpected event in the final three pages of the novel, the author creates room for the Dark Love series’ next installment. Chasing Love ends on a cliffhanger that leaves readers guessing at what will happen to Charlie and Lex next.

Lex’s betrayal is the novel’s clearest evidence of Attraction as a Threat to Identity. Throughout the novel, Charlie has attempted to maintain her sense of self amidst her tumultuous relationship with Lex. She has tried to remain true to the person she’s become since their breakup nine years prior. This is why she repeatedly resists Lex’s pleas to get back together. The way she expresses herself to Lex in Chapter 46 conveys her desperation to preserve her autonomy and power:

Lex, my life fell apart when you left. […] I couldn’t contact you. I had no closure. I was left picking up the pieces of what I thought was the greatest love of all time. I felt betrayed. […] It took me so long to find my grounding, to build my life again, and to be able to trust anyone (474).

Charlie employs clear, concise language, and a declarative, self-assured tone. She is articulating her feelings and expressing her needs. This monologue conveys Charlie’s strength of character and her ongoing fear of letting Lex undermine her emotional stability once more. At the same time, Charlie ultimately sacrifices her well-being when she agrees to give Lex a second chance. She opens her heart to him once more, convinced that he has changed and that she might be able to trust him again. This decision ultimately leads Charlie back to a compromised mental and emotional state. The images of her throwing her phone, sobbing, sliding down the wall into a crumpled fetal position, and screaming at her friend in the novel’s final scene convey her internal turmoil. She likens her mental state to “darkness” and lurking “shadows”—metaphors that evoke notions of fear and danger (516). While Charlie does blame Lex for hurting her again, she also blames herself. Charlie understands that she endangered her well-being by letting Lex back into her life.

The novel’s closing images also reiterate the possible dangers of Love as a Battle for Power. Charlie and Lex’s dynamic has always been defined by a push and pull. At times, Charlie has more power over Lex, and at times Lex has more control over Charlie. At the novel’s end, Charlie is entirely disempowered. She is crawling on the floor, sobbing and shaking. She compares herself to “a frightened little girl,” which evokes childhood fragility (516). These images capture how Lex has robbed Charlie of her autonomy by playing with her heart, manipulating and deceiving her. When relationships aren’t balanced, the individual risks losing her empowered sense of self. The novel thus closes on an ambiguous note. The image of Charlie lying on a bed, overcome by regret, implies that there is more to her story. She will have to rediscover her own strength to grow beyond this pain and sorrow.
