At the office, Lex calls Adriana. She wants Lex to attend an upcoming charity ball in New York and insists he bring a date named Brooke. Lex reluctantly agrees.

A few days later, Lex flies back to New York with Kate. He has a meeting with “a commercial broker” (47). Afterwards, he meets up with Adriana and their mother. Prologue-Chapter 13 Analysis

The opening chapters of Chasing Love introduce the main characters, conflicts, stakes, formal rules, and themes of the novel. Set primarily in New York City, the narrative alternates between the first-person points of view of primary characters Charlie Mason and Lex Edwards. The chapters titled with Charlie’s first name detail Charlie’s storyline from her perspective, while those titled with Lex’s name trace episodes from Lex’s storyline and perspective. The interpersonal tension between the two romantic leads can be seen in the discrepancies between their first-person accounts of the same events. In the narrative present, Charlie has “been single for a year straight” (13). She has devoted this time to her legal work, spending time with “many of [her] close friends,” and cultivating a stronger sense of self (13). However, when she begins dating the handsome Julian Baker, ghosts from Charlie’s fraught past threaten to complicate her idyllic new love life. Her subsequent chance encounter with her ex, Lex Edwards, only intensifies her insecurity. Lex, an austere, detached billionaire who heads a real-estate investment firm named after himself, is determined to live his life on his own terms. When he runs into his ex, Charlie, Lex’s controlled facade falters. The characters’ unexpected meeting in New York City compels them to question who they are and what they want.

Charlie’s new dating life challenges her to confront The Difficulty of Escaping the Past. Nine years prior to the narrative present, Charlie had an intense romantic and sexual relationship with Lex—formerly known as Alex. Because he “filled [Charlie] with promises” and made her “believe it was only [them] in this world,” Charlie thought she and Lex would be together forever (5). Lex’s sudden and unexplained disappearance from her life destabilized Charlie. Running into him almost a decade later forces Charlie to dredge up painful memories of her past life, threatening her contentment with her new fiancé, Julian Baker, and her internal peace and hope for the future. Whereas her new life with Julian offers the promise of happiness and stability, her past with Lex has been “filled with hurt and sorrow” (105). Despite her sustained longing to understand Lex and her desire to believe that he has “has matured and grown,” Charlie immediately tries “to protect [her] newfound relationship” when she runs into Lex (105). Her defensiveness of Julian and ferocity towards Lex convey her inner conflict between the past and the present. Because she hasn’t made amends with her past, she can’t fully embrace her future. Her best friend Nikki argues that Charlie “can’t have a future with Julian if [she doesn’t] sort out [her] past”—particularly her unresolved feelings for Lex (108). Nikki fulfills the quintessential best friend role. She offers Charlie advice and provides perspective on Charlie’s experience. Further, her counsel indicates that Charlie is still in conflict with her past.

Lex’s confrontation with Charlie also triggers the fear of vulnerability that comes with his intense feelings for her, framing Love as a Battle for Power. The content and tenor of his internal monologue changes in the chapters after he and Charlie run into each other. Prior to their meeting, Lex tells himself things like: “No one tells me what to do,” “I live my life exactly how I want,” and “Everything in my life makes sense now” (50). His view of himself is controlled, definitive, and declarative. After he sees Charlie again, Lex’s internal monologue becomes more harried and uncertain. He starts saying things to himself like “I’m fucking going crazy,” “This isn’t like me,” “I’m always in control,” and “What has she done to me” (120)? Panicked at the loss of self-control, he fears that he is losing his identity. Charlie is a reminder of Lex’s past life. She recalls to him the era of his life when he was Alex, not Lex. By way of comparison, Alex was softer, more caring, and less restrained; Lex is stoic, unmovable, and steely. “Alex” represents the past, while “Lex” represents the present. Charlie is the bridge between these two personas. When Lex sees her again, he is compelled to reconcile the person he was when he and Charlie were together with the person he’s become since their breakup.

Charlie and Lex’s relationship satisfies the second chance romance trope. Charlie and Lex’s romance didn’t work out when they were together a decade prior. Alex was married and Charlie was a teenager. In the present, the characters’ impromptu reunion offers them the opportunity to make amends for their fraught past and to try loving each other again.
