Mina walks into a gothic house. The vampire inside, Malachi, apologizes for Mina’s father, Cornelius, sending her here. Malachi bites Mina’s neck. They engage in friction play, and she orgasms after he stops feeding. He notes that her blood doesn’t taste human. She explains that she’s half vampire: a dhampir. Malachi notices her panties are wet and takes them off. He asks for consent, Mina says yes, and he bites her thigh. She orgasms again. Malachi leaves the room.
Mina blacks out and wakes up in a bedroom. She thinks about her lack of magic and realizes it was why her father made her into a sacrifice for Malachi to feed on and impregnate. Malachi is a bloodline vampire, and his child with Mina would give Cornelius power over that bloodline. Mina limps around the bedroom on a bad knee, feels woozy, and eats a PowerBar from her suitcase. She internally vows to escape and walks to the kitchen.
Malachi is there and tells her that she is mouthier than previous sacrifices. She claims that she doesn’t crave his bite and sex, but she secretly does. He says she tastes better than other dhamphirs, and this makes him curious. Then, Malachi strips her to the waist. They bicker about him possessing her.
Malachi asks Mina where she wants to be bitten. He wants to see her orgasm again and suggests different places for his bite. When he licks her nipple, she wants him to bite her breast. He does, taking only a little blood, and carefully lowers them to the floor. They engage in friction play. When Malachi bites her other breast, Mina orgasms. He says he will have sex with her soon; this is just a preview.
They bicker about her enjoying the bite. She denies she likes it as much as she does. When she gets up, Malachi notices her bad knee. Mina explains that Cornelius injured it when she tried to escape. He pulls out her knife, and she asks for it back. He refuses, and she notes that there are scars on his chest from previous wounds. He asks her name.
Malachi cuts his own neck with the knife. He says if Mina drinks from him, it will heal her knee. Mina doesn’t believe him but drinks his blood anyway. He has to pull her off of him, and she asks for more after his wound heals. He says she can’t have more blood today. She asks him to have sex with her, and he tells her to ask again the next day. Mina passes out.
Mina wakes up in the bedroom and feels refreshed. The pain in her knee has decreased, and she’s surprised Malachi told the truth about the healing powers of his blood. Mina takes a bath, and Malachi enters the bathroom, only wearing pants. She asks about the scars on his torso, and he explains they were made with silver, so his healing powers couldn’t completely remove them.
Malachi apologizes for his behavior earlier, explaining that he was starved. He says she’s free to leave, but she doesn’t have any resources or connections. Her worst fears are ending up as a lab experiment for humans and being recaptured by Cornelius. She says she’s staying and realizes Malachi is trapped here. When she offers to have sex, Malachi tells her to finish her bath and leaves.
Mina gets dressed and goes to the kitchen, which is full of food. After eating, she isn’t sure what to do. She used to enjoy exercising at her father’s compound before he broke her knee. Mina wanders through the house and finds a gym. Malachi appears and asks if Mina wants to spar.
Mina is surprised that Malachi wants to do more than have sex and drink blood. Malachi throws a slow punch that Mina can avoid and tells her to stop arguing and spar. She tries to hit him, but he dodges. He gently hits her in the stomach. She says a dhamphir can’t beat a vampire. He critiques her form and knows that her knee is doing better, but she’s favoring it. Cornelius didn’t train or feed her properly. With Malachi’s training, good food, and vampire blood, Mina can be as strong as a vampire. Mina doesn’t believe him.
Malachi says they can wait to have sex if Mina trains with him and exchanges blood with him. Mina thinks he’s lying about everything. He assures her he is telling the truth and will only have sex with her when she asks him to. She says she can’t control her desire when he bites her, and he says he will wait for her to ask for sex when he isn’t biting her. Mina agrees.
Malachi starts instructing her, and they spar for an hour. Then, he sits on a stool and motions Mina over to him for a bite. She straddles him, and he bites her neck. They engage in friction play. Malachi stops feeding, and Mina tells him to keep going. He wonders why she tastes different than everyone he’s fed on before. Touching her teeth, he realizes they aren’t sharp enough to puncture his skin.
Malachi bites his own tongue and kisses Mina. As they kiss, his bite heals. Mina pulls away, stands up, and asks for her knife back. Malachi refuses. Mina pretends to be angry about the kiss, but she desires Malachi. He offers to perform oral sex on her, and she agrees.
Malachi pulls Mina to the ground, kisses her, cuts her tongue with his teeth, and drinks her blood. He pulls away, touches her body through her clothes, rips off her pants, and gives her oral sex. Mina enjoys it. Malachi is shocked to discover she is a virgin and pulls away. Mina begs him to continue. He does, she orgasms, and he bites her. Then, he starts kissing her, and they engage in friction play until she orgasms again.
Malachi has flames in his eyes, and the room is on fire. Mina tries to tell him this, but he continues with friction play. She grabs his penis through his pants, and his eyes go black. She finally conveys that there is a ring of fire around them. He apologizes and magically puts out the fire. Mina realizes Malachi’s magic is fire-based. He says her blood is special and made him lose control, but he swears he won’t start another fire. Mina denies that she’s special.
Only turned vampires, those not born into a vampire family, have fed from her. Malachi is the first bloodline vampire, born into one of seven families, to feed from her. When Mina starts to walk over the ashes, Malachi picks her up and carries her to the bedroom. He promises to buy new things for it. Mina closes the door, and he says he’s not the enemy. She has been conditioned to think everyone is her enemy.
The next week includes more sparring and biting, but no form of sex. Mina orgasms from the bite alone. At the end of the week, another vampire appears in the library. He pulls her to him on the couch, and Mina tells him to get off of her. He likes her defiance and introduces himself as Wolf, an old friend of Malachi’s. Malachi comes into the room. Wolf says Malachi should let him feed from Mina, and Malachi agrees to biting only.
Wolf gets on top of Mina and asks if Malachi allowing others to bite her makes her angry. She admits it does. He asks for her consent to bite her and get back at Malachi. Mina agrees. As Wolf feeds from her and engages in friction play with her, Malachi breaks the arms of his chair. Mina orgasms. After they move apart, Wolf and Malachi talk about Cornelius wanting Malachi’s child and control of his bloodline.
Wolf says Malachi needs to break Cornelius’s ward that’s trapping him here, and that requires a human sacrifice or a being more powerful than a vampire to intervene. When Wolf says blood wards don’t affect him, Mina realizes his magic power is blood. Cornelius’s power is spirit; he can control people’s minds.
Mina says she’s going to bed, but Wolf stops her. He says Malachi should kill her to break the ward. Malachi tells Wolf to get away from Mina and get out of the house. Wolf says he’ll be back tomorrow and leaves. Malachi embraces Mina and pulls her onto his lap on the couch. He apologizes. Mina says her father will kill her once she’s given birth. Malachi says he won’t let Cornelius kill her, nor allow Wolf to have sex with Mina without her consent.
Mina says she doesn’t want to die a virgin. Malachi explains that he was trying to give her space before having sex with her. He wants her to choose to sleep with him and apologizes for not telling her about the ward earlier. Malachi admits that he and Wolf are sometimes lovers, and he is happy to have Mina sleep with Wolf as well, if she wants to; Malachi doesn’t want to own Mina like her father.
Mina asks if Malachi plans to sleep with Wolf that night, and Malachi says he has to talk with Wolf, and then he’ll decide. Malachi will have sex with Mina only when she asks him to. She decides to go to bed alone, but she wants to have sex with him.
Mina can’t sleep and decides to ask Malachi to have sex with her. When she gets to his room, the door is slightly open, and she sees him having sex with Wolf. Wolf smiles at Mina. Mina starts to storm off, but she stops herself before going downstairs. Wolf comes into the hall and calls her a coward. She almost falls down the stairs. He catches her and asks her to join him and Malachi in bed. Mina says no.
Wolf assures her that he won’t hurt her and magically moves her blood to her breasts and vagina. She says she knows blood is his magical power, and he says he can maintain an erection for days. Wolf invites her to watch him and Malachi. Mina agrees. In the bedroom, she asks Malachi if she can watch, and he agrees.
Wolf and Malachi make out, and this turns Mina on; she doesn’t feel jealous. Malachi tells Mina to touch her clitoris. Mina does so and shows her vagina to the men. Malachi begins to have sex with Wolf from behind. Wolf tells Mina how good Malachi feels and instructs her to imagine Malachi having sex with her. Malachi suggests that Wolf give Mina oral sex, and Mina agrees. Malachi keeps his eyes on Mina as she orgasms.
Wolf pulls Mina to the floor and rubs himself against her. He says she should rub against him while Malachi penetrates Wolf. Mina does. Malachi says he gets to take Mina’s virginity. Mina asks Wolf to bite her, and she orgasms. His penis is at her opening, and he starts to move into her. Malachi rips Wolf’s throat out and gets on top of Mina. He asks for her consent for penetration. She says yes.
Malachi kisses Mina and asks again for her consent. She says yes, and Wolf tells them to get on with it while his throat heals. Malachi and Wolf banter about orgasms. Malachi bites Mina to make her first time less painful, and he enters her. Wolf warns Malachi about the fire he stoked, and Malachi says it’s under control. Mina struggles to bite Malachi’s neck and eventually succeeds. They both orgasm.
Wolf warns them about the fire again, and Malachi puts it back in the fireplace magically. Wolf and Malachi kiss and joke about the earlier violence. Malachi leads everyone into the bathroom to clean Wolf’s blood off of them. The three of them shower together, the men washing Mina. Then, they all get into a hot bath.
Wolf says the ward can be broken without a sacrifice if the space is filled with more power than the ward can contain. Malachi assures Mina that she will not be sacrificed. Wolf says Rylan, who is from another vampire bloodline, is coming to the house. Malachi is upset Wolf didn’t mention this earlier; Malachi and Rylan have a complicated romantic history. When they get out of the tub, Wolf asks Mina to stay with them.
The three of them sleep together in the same bed. When Mina wakes up, Malachi is looking at her. She worries about escaping the ward and their romantic future. Malachi reassures her that she is special, and he likes her. He also says Rylan can help them figure out how to break the ward. Malachi says Mina should eat, but she wants to stay in bed. Wolf gets on top of Mina and asks to kiss her. She agrees. They kiss.
Mina checks in with Malachi and makes sure it’s okay that Wolf penetrates her. He assures her that it is and tells her to focus on her pleasure. Wolf penetrates Mina while Malachi plays with her clitoris. Mina orgasms and Wolf orgasms. Malachi pushes Wolf aside and penetrates Mina. He tells Wolf not to bite her. Wolf kisses Mina’s clitoris. Wolf moves away, bites Malachi, then returns to Mina’s clitoris. Mina orgasms, and Malachi orgasms. Malachi tells Wolf to make breakfast for Mina. When he leaves the room, Malachi gets another erection inside Mina.
As Mina and Malachi have sex, Rylan enters the room. He jokes that Mina is the reason why Malachi hasn’t escaped yet. Rylan tells Mina to leave the room. Malachi tells her to stay and holds her hand. Rylan comments that it’s good that he kept Malachi from impregnating Mina. Malachi mentions that Wolf just filled Mina with semen. Mina puts on a shirt and starts to leave the room. Rylan threatens to kill her to keep her from getting pregnant. Malachi threatens to take off Rylan’s head if he hurts Mina.
In the kitchen, Mina tells Wolf that Cornelius will use Wolf’s baby to control Wolf and his bloodline, just like he will with Malachi. Mina asks Wolf to get the morning-after pill. Wolf says he’s willing to hide Mina from Cornelius and then sacrifice a human to free Malachi. Mina suggests they just get the pill and condoms. Wolf kisses her and heads off to the store.
Rylan comes into the kitchen and says Malachi thinks Mina is special, but she doesn’t know any of them. Mina asks how long Rylan has been obsessed with Malachi. Rylan, surprised at her backtalk, grabs her throat. She continues to bait him. Malachi told Rylan that Mina tastes different. Rylan, as an older vampire, wants to taste for himself and bites Mina. She orgasms during friction play with Rylan. Mina feels lightheaded, remembers she didn’t eat breakfast, and passes out.
Mina wakes up in bed. Rylan says Mina isn’t just vampire and human. Wolf comes back with the morning-after pill, condoms, and protein shakes. He asks Mina if she’s sure she wants to take the pill. Malachi grabs the pills and asks if they will hurt Mina. She doesn’t think so. Rylan asks if Mina has taken human medication before; she hasn’t. He says she has more supernatural lineage than just vampire, and the medicine may not work as intended.
Mina drinks a shake and tells Rylan that she doesn’t have any magic. Cornelius never told her about other supernatural creatures. Rylan says her powers may be awakening late in life. She can access them fully with an excess of pleasure or pain. Malachi refuses to allow anyone to torture Mina. Mina says she’s had a lot of pleasure, and her powers haven’t manifested.
Rylan says she needs three men to give her pleasure to activate her powers, and they will free Malachi. Malachi assures Mina that he will take care of her after the blood ward is broken. He wants to be with her, but he will help her get somewhere else if she chooses not to be with him. She agrees to try glutting herself on pleasure.
Rylan leaves the room. Wolf kisses Mina and leaves the room. Malachi suggests that Mina eat something. She worries about waiting to take the pill because it will lose effectiveness. Malachi hugs her and assures her that Rylan’s plan is likely to work because he is old and wise. Mina isn’t ready to trust Rylan, but she trusts Malachi. He smiles, and she kisses him. He pins her to the wall but stops and insists she eat something. She says they can have a quickie. Malachi gives her oral sex. Rylan and Wolf come back and watch. Mina orgasms.
Malachi carries Mina to the kitchen. Rylan sees that Malachi bit Mina, says she needs blood, and rips his wrist open with his fangs. His blood heightens Mina’s senses even more than Malachi and Wolf’s blood did. She asks how old he is, and he says it’s rude to ask. Malachi puts a sandwich, water, and orange juice in front of Mina. She eats and drinks.
Rylan says the plan is to make Mina orgasm so intensely that she can overcome the mental blocks to her magical powers and burst the blood ward by overwhelming it with those powers. Wolf and Malachi assure Mina that she’ll enjoy the experience of being with three men. She admits she trusts Malachi.
Rylan leaves, and Mina takes a nap. Malachi wakes her up. She takes a shower, brushes her teeth, and dresses in a robe. The men prepare the bedroom with candles. Rylan says condoms will interfere with the magic, so they shouldn’t use them. Malachi explains that he’ll kiss her first, Wolf will touch her next, and then Rylan will touch her. Malachi asks for Mina’s consent. She gives it. He assures her they will stop at any time if she wants to.
Malachi and Mina start kissing, and Malachi holds Mina in his arms. Wolf comes up behind Mina and kisses her neck. Rylan cuts Malachi’s neck with a knife, and Mina drinks it. Malachi turns Mina so she is facing Wolf. Wolf and Malachi open Mina’s robe. Malachi moves them to the bed and performs oral sex on Mina. Rylan cuts Wolf’s wrist with the knife, and Mina drinks from Wolf. After the cut heals, Rylan asks to kiss Mina. She consents, and he does: “Just like that, everything changes” (145).
As Rylan kisses Mina, Malachi continues to lick her clitoris, and Wolf plays with Mina’s nipples. The men move Mina so that she is on all fours. Wolf uses lube to penetrate Mina anally. They roll over so Wolf is underneath Mina. Malachi penetrates Mina’s vagina. Rylan cuts his arm and feeds his blood to Mina. Everything seems weightless. Mina demands that Rylan put his penis in her mouth. Malachi tells Wolf to play with Mina’s clitoris.
Mina feels like something has been broken free in her soul and in the world around them. Rylan orgasms, then Malachi orgasms. Wolf flips them over and orgasms on Mina’s back. Malachi says they broke the blood ward. Rylan, shocked, says Mina is a seraph. Rylan explains that seraphim were supposedly extinct. One of their powers is linking with their partners and being able to control them. The men feel the bond with Mina. She apologizes.
As Malachi packs Mina’s bag, Rylan suggests that Wolf run before the bond fully takes hold, but Wolf refuses. Wolf doesn’t believe Mina will abuse the bond. If Mina gets pregnant with her seraph powers, she could overthrow Cornelius. Malachi brings Mina some clothes. She suggests that the men try to run and escape the bond. Rylan admits that the bond won’t be changed by moving geographically. Malachi says he’ll never leave Mina behind and asks her to give him time to come up with a plan. She agrees.
Malachi picks up Mina. Rylan says they should go to New York. As they leave the house, Malachi sets it on fire. Mina is determined to become pregnant and kill her father.
Part 1 is Robert’s first novella in the Court of the Vampire Queen omnibus. It takes place in a house that “looks like something out of a gothic novel” (1). Robert’s gothic setting is where Mina learns about sex and love from the undead. The house itself functions as a liminal space: Cut off from Cornelius’s compound yet not fully integrated into the broader vampire world, it becomes a contained place of experimentation where power dynamics, desire, and identity can be renegotiated away from formal institutions.
Mina was abused by Cornelius at his compound in Montana. The Court of the Vampire Queen is Mina’s journey of Overcoming Trauma and Discovering the Self. The vampire compound is cultish. For instance, Mina’s knowledge of the outside world is very limited: “The only things [she knows] about human society are what [she’s] gleaned from the few servants [her] father keeps and the books [her] mother somehow managed to smuggle into the colony” (12). Mina is kept ignorant and separate to keep her from having the means to escape or the knowledge and connections to survive. Cornelius was abusive in a variety of ways, including limiting food: He “always allowed [Mina] meals in a begrudging manner, as if [her] very need to eat inconvenienced him” (33). She mostly survived on protein bars and was never taught how to cook. The physical injury to her knee, which Cornelius inflicts when she attempts escape, highlights this control by marking her body as a site of damage and surveillance. Cornelius disliked that Mina didn’t show signs of having magical powers and treated her as less than human. She is given to Malachi “like a possession” (16) and meant to not only feed him blood, but also become pregnant with his child so Cornelius can control Malachi’s bloodline. She has no bodily autonomy under Cornelius’s rule and struggles to develop a sense of self because she is always in survival mode: reacting rather than reflecting and choosing. Robert uses Mina as an example of someone who overcomes her history of abuse, highlighting a sense of hope that can follow abuse. Part 1 only begins this process: It traces the earliest stages of recovery, where safety, nourishment, and the possibility of mutual care create enough stability for Mina to imagine herself as more than a tool in her father’s schemes. Rather than depicting healing as a simple reversal of trauma, the text emphasizes how slowly Mina’s self-concept shifts, with each small moment of being believed, trained, or fed complicating her internalized sense of worthlessness.
Once she is out of the compound, Mina discovers the Power of Consent and Choice. At first, she feels like “a sacrificial lamb” (6, 9). She is reduced to an animal in this metaphor, highlighting how a lack of choice is dehumanizing. However, Mina discovers that she desires Malachi. When he is starved, he drinks her blood and performs oral sex on her without her consent. Once he has blood in his system, Malachi strikes a bargain with Mina: He won’t have sex with her until she asks for it if they can exchange blood and work on Mina’s fighting skills together. He even clarifies that she will have to ask “nicely while [his] fangs aren’t inside [her]” (39). Vampire bites leave the receiver helpless and lustful. By juxtaposing Malachi’s initial, hunger-driven violation with his later insistence on explicit verbal consent, the narrative foregrounds consent as an ongoing practice rather than a single threshold moment. Malachi is not presented as purely ethical—his position of power over Mina remains undeniable—but his attempts to establish rules create a framework within which Mina can begin to articulate desire instead of merely enduring it.
Mina, while not being bitten, desires Malachi. She says she’s “never had a choice […] Not once in [her] fucking life. [She’s] saying yes, choosing this” (89). This refers to having sex with Malachi and Wolf. She chooses two vampires to take her virginity. Malachi doesn’t just obtain consent once; he repeatedly asks Mina for her consent. Mina thinks, “Gods, why does he always make [her] say it?” (126) when Malachi asks for her consent to include Rylan in her sexual life with Malachi and Wolf. Malachi ensures that Mina gives verbal and explicit consent with each new arrangement of sexual partners and acts. Her consent to have sex with three men awakens her seraphim powers; her choice gives her magical power, as well as personal power. The text thus links consent to empowerment on both a metaphorical and literal level: Saying “yes” under conditions that Mina recognizes as safe not only affirms her subjectivity but also triggers her latent magic, suggesting a direct connection between self-authored desire and access to transformative power.
The idea of consent is complicated when Mina learns about her seraphim powers. Seraphim have a bond “that links them with their partners” (154). Moreover, it allows them to command their partners and limits the distance that their partners can travel away from them. Mina deeply values consent because she couldn’t make choices for herself for most of her life. This leads to her being horrified at her new power. Choice is an important part of love, she believes. This tension between Mina’s ethics and her supernatural abilities introduces one of the book’s central paradoxes: She gains agency in part through a bond that can erase her lovers’ agency. Part 1 ends by framing this paradox as an unresolved moral problem rather than a fantasy of total control, positioning the seraph bond as a source of future conflict as well as protection.
The third theme in The Court of the Vampire Queen is Reimagining Romance Beyond Monogamy. At first, Mina is surprised that Malachi includes Wolf in their sex life: “Malachi told [her] he and Wolf have a long and complicated history. [She] might not have fully comprehended that they were a package deal” (77). However, she avoids being jealous because Wolf’s relationship with Malachi predates hers. She accepts being the newcomer and ends up loving both of them. In Part 1, Mina and the others are just beginning to fall in love and form a polycule. By the end of Part 1, Rylan still dislikes Mina because of the threat she poses to his autonomy as a seraph. Robert generally presents polyamory in a positive light, albeit a complicated one. Within the internal logic of the story, polyamory enables a redistribution of emotional and physical labor: Different partners train Mina, feed her, protect her, and affirm her desires. At the same time, existing histories—particularly the prior relationship between Malachi and Wolf and Rylan’s ambivalence—show that nonmonogamy does not erase jealousy or hurt, but provides a different framework for negotiating them. Part 1 therefore lays the groundwork for a romance that is collaborative rather than competitive, replacing the familiar love triangle with a developing unit whose stability remains uncertain.
Robert introduces several symbols in Part 1: magic, fire, and eyes. Vampire bloodline powers are associated with the elements: “Seven bloodlines. Seven powers. The elementals: earth, air, water, fire […] Body, blood, spirit” (60). Each bloodline has its own symbol. For instance, Wolf represents blood. Malachi represents fire. He starts a fire in a circle around them when he and Mina kiss and engage in friction play until she orgasms. This fire represents his uncontrolled lust for her. When they leave the house he was imprisoned in, Malachi sets it on fire. This fire represents burning away the trauma of imprisonment. Fire appears in Malachi’s eyes as another symbol of his lust. When Wolf is lustful, his blue eyes become “crimson” (131). Changing eye colors symbolize emotions, especially desire. The elemental system also organizes the characters’ roles within the developing relationship: Fire aligns Malachi with volatility and transformation, blood associates Wolf with intimacy and embodiment, and Mina’s emerging seraph nature introduces a supernatural register that exceeds the established order. By encoding emotional states in visible signs—flames, eye color, scars—the text turns interior feeling into legible magic, reinforcing the idea that desire and power are inseparable in this world.
