Oro Rey is a deuteragonist who functions as a love interest for Isla and a foil to Grim. The round and dynamic character’s arc is defined by the inner conflict between his duties as king and his profound love for Isla. While Grim’s love is singular and all-consuming, Oro’s is tempered by a deep-seated sense of honor and responsibility to his people. Although he allies with his former foe to search for Isla, his friends consistently serve as a chorus reminding him of his obligations to Lightlark, forcing him to navigate the precarious balance between personal desire and his royal duties.

Oro’s development is tied to his exploration of his lineage. The quest to find the lost king pushes him to confront his family’s hidden history and forces him to rely on Grim, stirring up their complicated shared past, which is marked by both friendship and enmity. Oro is driven by a desire for Isla’s well-being above his own claim to her heart, telling Grim he wants her back “even if it’s not with [him]” (54). In the final act, Oro is left as the primary defender of Lightlark while Isla and Grim are in Skyshade. This role tests the  limits of his power and his emotional fortitude. The loss of Isla, combined with the immense pressure of his duty, pushes him to the brink of losing control, causing the island itself to fracture in response to his inner turmoil. This link between his emotional state and his realm’s stability is a stark representation of the corrupting and isolating nature of immense power. Oro’s arc is one of maturation, as he is forced to become the unwavering protector his world needs even while his own heart is broken.

Cronan Malvere is the primary antagonist of the story. He is the ultimate embodiment of the corrupting and isolating nature of immense power, a being whose existence is defined by his insatiable hunger for conquest. Unlike a typical villain who relies on brute force, Cronan’s primary weapons are psychological. He manipulates and mentally tortures Isla, attempting to break her will and reshape her into a “Worldkey” he can use to unlock universal domination. His cruelty is most evident in his decision to erase Grim’s memories of Isla, a punishment designed to inflict maximum emotional pain and turn a powerful love into a weapon of hate.

As the original Nightshade ruler and Grim’s ancestor, Cronan serves as a “dark mirror,” showing what Grim could become if he fully surrendered to his ambition and forsook love. Similarly, he is a dark reflection of Isla, representing a wielder of immense, world-shaping power who has chosen total destruction over any form of creation or preservation. His goal is to unite the universe under his singular, tyrannical rule by collecting ancient artifacts of power, including the Infinite diamond, the Threads of Time, and the Pool of Possibilities. He views all relationships, especially love, as weaknesses to be exploited. His character is repeatedly described as a void, an ancient and formidable entity for whom power is the only meaningful pursuit.
