Plot Summary

The fifth installment in the Dark Olympus series is set in Olympus, a modern city-state isolated from the outside world by a protective barrier. Olympus is governed by the Thirteen, a ruling body whose members each hold a title drawn from Greek mythology. Power among the Thirteen can change hands through the assassination clause: Anyone who kills a sitting member can claim their title.

Eris Kasios, who holds the Aphrodite title, prepares for her wedding to Theseus Vitalis, an outsider from the island of Aeaea who murdered the previous Hephaestus to seize the title. Theseus's foster father, Minos Vitalis, orchestrated their arrival in Olympus as part of a larger plan to destabilize the Thirteen. Eris proposed the marriage herself to keep the enemy close and gather intelligence. Before the ceremony, Adonis, her longtime on-again, off-again lover, begs her to flee the city. Eris refuses and is deliberately cruel to push him away. Her sister Helen, who holds the Ares title, helps her into her dress and later slips a knife into her hand as a precaution.

The wedding is a tense spectacle. Theseus resents the forced marriage but has been instructed by Minos to play along. Afterward, Eris confronts Theseus: He secretly invited Adonis to the wedding to hurt her, and her reaction confirms that Adonis is her emotional weak point. At the reception, Eris notes Theseus's genuine warmth toward Pandora, his best friend since childhood and the only member of Minos's household outside the inner circle. Eris identifies Pandora as a potential lever. The newlyweds consummate the marriage in a brief, combative encounter, and Eris immediately leaves to execute her next move.

Following Eris's prearranged instructions, her ally Eurydice Dimitriou, the youngest Dimitriou sister, lures Pandora from the reception to Hades's exclusive kink club in the lower city. Pandora becomes too intoxicated to participate, so Eris brings her to her own apartment. The next morning, Eris posts a selfie with Pandora visible in the background, igniting a media frenzy suggesting Aphrodite spent her wedding night with someone other than her husband. Theseus storms over and finds Pandora there, but Eris only taunts him. Meanwhile, Adonis encounters Theseus and proposes a bargain: He will coach Theseus on fixing his public image in exchange for a promise not to harm Eris. Theseus reluctantly agrees. Both men acknowledge a mutual attraction but do not act on it.

Over the following days, Eris pursues Pandora, and their connection deepens through visits to the kink club and intimate evenings. Pandora asks Eris not to weaponize their relationship against Theseus; Eris agrees but privately plans to do whatever Olympus requires. Eris's dynamic with Theseus also shifts: Their arguments turn into aggressive sex, and one night Theseus falls asleep in her bed. Eris, who has chronic insomnia rooted in childhood abuse by her father, the previous Zeus, unexpectedly sleeps beside him for the first time in days. When Adonis arrives the next morning and finds them together, he is shaken, understanding the significance. He informs them that someone attempted to assassinate Athena, a fellow member of the Thirteen, then leaves his apartment key on the counter, signaling the finality of his breakup with Eris.

Minos threatens Theseus over the damaging press coverage, and the staff at the Hephaestus office treats Theseus with open contempt, exposing how unqualified he is for the role. Pandora challenges his blind loyalty to Minos, arguing that Minos treats him as expendable. Theseus dismisses her but overhears Minos discussing mysterious shipments in the harbor. Pandora then visits Eris on her own, sharing their history: She and Theseus grew up in a brutal orphanage on Aeaea, where Theseus killed a priest who tried to assault Pandora, drawing Minos's attention. Minos took them in at fifteen in exchange for Theseus's total loyalty. Eris proposes a personal arrangement with Pandora: When they are alone, there will be no politics. That same night, Theseus goes to Adonis seeking connection, and they sleep together with a tenderness that surprises them both.

The next morning, the four share a domestic breakfast at Eris's apartment. Later, Eris is nearly killed when an attacker opens fire in her office lobby. Theseus shoves her to the floor and saves her life. Helen arrives with her security team and reports three assassination attempts on the Thirteen in twelve hours. That evening, Theseus finds Eris trembling from delayed shock. He calls Pandora, who tells him to call Adonis. Adonis provides the emotional care Eris needs, while Theseus offers comfort through shared understanding of violence. The night deepens into physical and emotional intimacy among the three, and Eris falls asleep quickly, the second consecutive night she has slept with Theseus present.

The next morning, Eris deduces that Adonis and Theseus have been intimate and that Adonis has been coaching Theseus's public image. A painful confrontation ensues. Adonis also discovers poison in takeout delivered to Eris, confirming that even routine deliveries have become dangerous. Perseus, Eris's brother who holds the Zeus title, convenes the Thirteen and confronts Minos directly. Minos denies responsibility for the assassination attempts, and intelligence confirms he is telling the truth. In a smaller meeting, Eris argues against a proposal to kill Theseus, claiming she can turn him within three days. Perseus grants the deadline but privately questions whether Eris is compromised.

Prompted by growing doubts, Theseus confronts Minos in a secret apartment. Minos reveals his true goal: not to replace the Thirteen but to destroy the institution entirely, leaving the city vulnerable for his unnamed female benefactor to seize. Theseus realizes he was always expendable. Meanwhile, Eris tells Adonis about the deadline. They acknowledge they were never a good fit as a monogamous couple and agree to pursue a polyamorous arrangement including Theseus and Pandora.

The four gather for dinner at Eris's penthouse. When Adonis discovers poison in a takeout container, he and Pandora leave to dispose of it. While they are gone, an armed attacker breaks in. Theseus engages the assailant, but his injured knee buckles. Eris charges with a kitchen knife to protect him, and in the struggle, the attacker's blade plunges into her stomach. Adonis and Pandora return; Adonis subdues the attacker while Theseus presses his hands to Eris's wound, begging her to stay alive.

Eris is rushed to the hospital. Theseus goes to Minos and renounces his title and loyalty. Minos drops his facade and dismisses Theseus as a disposable tool. At the hospital, Theseus informs Perseus he is formally resigning the Hephaestus title.

Eris wakes from surgery to find Theseus at her bedside. He has resigned, cut ties with Minos, and wants to stay in Olympus for Pandora, Adonis, and Eris. He declares his feelings in characteristically blunt terms: He has not wanted to strangle her in nearly a week, which he considers love. When Perseus pushes for a divorce, Eris announces she will resign the Aphrodite title as well, naming her assistant Sele as her successor. She tells her brother she is tired of being a weapon and asks him not to force her to continue. Perseus agrees. Adonis and Pandora join them, and all four affirm their commitment to building a life together in a polyamorous arrangement built on open communication. Minos's larger plot and the city's failing barrier remain unresolved threats.
