On her trip back to LA, Noah chastises herself for everything that happened in New York. She regrets being with Nick now that she knows he’s with Sophia. Back at home, she discovers a missed call from Raffaella and reflects on how their relationship has changed over the past year. Raffaella revealed that she was cheating on Noah’s dad with William throughout their marriage and was with William the night Noah’s dad attacked her. It took Noah a while to forgive Raffaella, but she realizes that now it is important to forgive Raffaella because her feelings for William are “what [she] had with [Nick]” (108). She reaches for her pendant. Discovering it’s gone, she vows to move on.
Over the following months, Noah settles back into her life in LA and distracts herself with school. However, she can’t help feeling hurt when she sees headlines announcing Nick and Sophia’s relationship. She’s going home for Thanksgiving and hopes Nick won’t be there. She pulls out her bags, surprised to find Lincoln’s business card in her suitcase. On her drive to Raffaella and Will’s, she calls Lincoln about a new job. He agrees to “pull some strings and have [his] secretary call [her]” soon (111).
Nick gets an email from his little sister Maddie’s social worker. Visiting Maddie has been easier since Nick’s family discovered William is Maddie’s biological father. However, Nick still worries about his mom Anabel taking care of Maddie. He’s also worried about Maddie because she misses Anabel’s ex, the man she grew up thinking was her dad. The email informs him Maddie will be spending Thanksgiving with William and Raffaella. Desperate to see Maddie again, Nick considers going home for the holiday. He studies “Sophia’s nude back” in his bed, comparing Sophia to Noah (116).
Noah catches up with her mom when she arrives at the house. Raffaella reveals Maddie is coming and opens up about the custody issues. Noah wants to know if Nick will be visiting, but Raffaella doesn’t know.
Nick shows up with Maddie on Thanksgiving. He takes Noah aside, asking to keep things civil for Maddie; he hasn’t told her about their breakup. Noah agrees to call a truce. The day elapses smoothly until Noah overhears William berating Nick for laying off hundreds of employees. Nick argues that William needs to trust him. Noah notices Maddie’s scared expression hearing them fight and offers to stay with her when Nick storms out of the house.
Nick takes a long drive and ends up drinking alone at a bar. He stews on his family situation and relationship with Noah. Back at the house, he finds Noah awake studying. They chat about school and Maddie. Suddenly Nick notices a scar on Noah’s face he doesn’t remember and demands to know what happened. She admits she was in a motorcycle accident but says that it’s none of his business.
Noah wakes up next to a sleeping Maddie. She carries Maddie into Nick’s room so she won’t wake up alone. Groggy, Nick reaches for Noah and kisses her. Noah pulls away, realizing he’s dreaming. When he wakes up, Noah says she’s going out shopping.
Downstairs, Noah, Nick, and Maddie make coffee and hot chocolate. Nick agrees to spend the morning with Maddie and meet up with Noah at the mall later.
Nick, Maddie, and Noah meet up at Macy’s. They go to a restaurant where Maddie plays on a playground. Nick feels worried about how quiet Noah seems. Finally, she admits that his behavior is confusing her. She’d rather he was mean to her if he doesn’t want to be with her. Frustrated, Nick agrees to stop being so sweet.
Back out in the mall, Nick panics when he runs into Anabel. She takes him aside and reveals that she has leukemia. She informs Nick that Maddie will live with William while she’s undergoing treatment. Nick is convinced she’ll abandon Maddie the way she did him. Noah interjects, reassuring both of them.
Back at home, Nick leaves Maddie with Noah and goes on another drive. He returns at midnight, finding Noah awake in bed near a sleeping Maddie. He pulls her into his room, where he admits he needs her and wants to have sex with her. Noah is initially wary but gives in.
Noah admits she hasn’t had sex with anyone else since they broke up. She tells Nick she loves him, begging him to say it back. Nick refuses, but they have sex, and both orgasm. Afterwards, Nick holds Noah. She lies awake wondering what this means.
In the morning, Noah sneaks out of Nick’s bed, packs her bag, and drives back to school. She cries all the way there, wishing things could be different.
Nick wakes up, shocked to discover Noah left. He calls her, but she doesn’t pick up. He’s furious when he runs into William, who confronts him about Anabel’s condition. William assures him Anabel isn’t abandoning Maddie. Nick is skeptical, but when William hugs him, his anger dissipates.
Two weeks later, Noah meets with Simon Roger about her new job at LRB. She’s shocked to discover Simon co-owns the business with Lincoln and Nick. She considers declining the internship, but Simon convinces her to accept. Over the following weeks, she settles into work, celebrates the holidays, and tries to ignore Jenna’s nagging about Nick.
One night after work, Simon invites Noah out for dinner. She accepts, surprised. She enjoys the evening but when Simon tries kissing her later, she realizes she isn’t ready.
At work, Nick frets about LRB’s bad publicity since the layoffs. He flies to LA to check in on the California office. When he arrives at the meeting he called, he’s shocked to see Noah in an intimate conversation with Simon and demands to see her alone.
Nick confronts Noah about working at LRB and fraternizing with Simon. Noah dismisses his anger and returns to work. The next day, the office meeting goes better until Sophia arrives. Noah is overcome by emotion seeing her with Nick but turns her attention to Simon instead.
The next night, Noah goes out for drinks with Jenna and reveals that she’s seeing her boss. On the drive home afterward, Noah gets a flat tire and calls Simon for help.
Simon tells Nick about Noah’s flat tire, and Nick goes to rescue her. Noah is furious when he arrives but lets him fix the tire. He almost kisses her but pulls away, promising never to do it again.
Noah attends a grand opening party for LRB with Simon. After the main event, she agrees to go out for more drinks with Simon, Nick, and Sophia. She drinks heavily, then kisses and dances with Simon. Nick sees her and pulls her aside. He pushes her against a wall and kisses her. Noah pulls away, suddenly feeling sick. Worried, Nick insists on taking her home. While getting her settled, he notices she still has his old letter and tells her to toss it.
On his way home, Nick worries about his feelings for Noah. At the apartment, Sophia confronts him about his whereabouts, reminding Nick that Noah is with Simon and he’s with her.
At work the next morning, Noah apologizes to Simon about the night before. He forgives her, insisting she can ask him for help whenever she needs it. Then Nick arrives and calls an office meeting, announcing that relationships between coworkers are forbidden. Noah confronts him afterward. She doesn’t want him trying to control her anymore and quits her job to get away from him.
Noah races over to Simon’s place later that night. She kisses him, and he carries her into the bedroom. However, when he tries undressing her, she pulls away. She leaves, apologizing that she isn’t ready.
Nick spends the rest of the night obsessing over what happened with Noah. The next day, she returns to the office and gives him her formal resignation. He begs her to stay, but she insists she needs to get over him. He hugs her, and she begs him to take her back. Nick pulls away, saying he can’t forgive her.
The events of Part 2 usher Noah along her Quest for Personal Growth. In an attempt to get over Nick, Noah begins to put her life back together, including rebuilding her identity. She takes steps to pursue her desires and orchestrate a future that’s best for her as an individual. Her return to LA from New York launches Noah’s journey towards change. When she returns to her apartment, she remembers that her pendant from Nick is gone and reminds herself that she has “to keep going” (108). This silent vow captures Noah’s desire to make her own way in the world despite the heartbreak Nick has caused.
Noah’s work to focus on school and get a new job also conveys her ability to exercise her agency and to stop letting Guilt, Regret, and the Past hold her back. She takes bold steps to develop a new life, the first of which is her new internship at LRB. In Chapter 17, Noah calls Lincoln Baxwell on her way to Thanksgiving even though she has no idea “what sort of work a nineteen-year-old student could do for him” (110). Instead of letting her fear hold her back, she reminds herself that “there [is] no harm in asking” and finds her conversation with Lincoln surprisingly easy:
I almost shouted with joy. It had been so easy! I couldn’t believe it! I mean, I could have asked Will for a favor, but it was better this way. Especially since Baxwell was the one who had tried to recruit me, right? I said thanks and goodbye, and almost rear-ended the car in front of me, which was stopped at a red light. My sense of relief had distracted me from the road. I was no longer jobless! (111).
Noah’s excitement over the new job opportunity is comprehensive. She uses a series of exclamation points to convey her relief over securing the job and her pride in herself for taking a risk. She is so elated that she loses track of what’s happening on the road, which conveys how emotionally and mentally significant this personal stride is for Noah. She is no longer waiting for others to offer her opportunities or expecting that the people in her life will make a way for her. Instead, she is claiming her strength and pursuing possibilities on her own terms. Her first weeks at the job similarly underscore Noah’s strength and determination to overcome her past guilt, regret, and heartbreak.
However, Noah’s encounters with Nick in LA complicate her quest for personal growth and threaten to tug her back into guilt, regret, and the past. When Nick leaves New York to visit for Thanksgiving and temporarily oversee the California office, he tries to control Noah, renewing their old dynamic. He questions her work at the company, insisting he could have gotten her a better job, and forbids her to keep seeing Simon because he’s jealous. Nick’s internal turmoil compromises Noah’s growth as she finds herself reverting to old patterns of behavior with Nick. Their decision to have sex in Chapters 21 and 22 reveals the sustained power of their affection for each other, but it only confuses Noah because she’s tired of lying to herself about her and Nick’s future. Their intimate exchange amplifies the narrative tension and foreshadows new developments in their relationship, but it also distracts Noah from the life she is trying to make independent of Nick. The novel uses these dynamics to show how reminders of the past might complicate the individual’s ability to heal.
The scenes of Noah interacting with Maddie reiterate her character’s emotional strength and stand in contrast to how, when Noah is with Nick, she often feels frustrated or small because of Nick’s dominating aggressive personality. These scenes with Maddie illustrate how far Noah has come when she isn’t feeling the pressure of her relationship with Nick. With Maddie, she exhibits the steady empathy she has been developing, showing her growth. She takes care of Maddie over Thanksgiving because she wants to support Nick and Raffaella, but also because she genuinely empathizes with Maddie’s situation. With this juxtaposition, Maddie’s character becomes a younger iteration of Noah’s character. She reminds Noah what it was like to be in complex family situations growing up and feel alone and helpless. Noah assumes a comforting, protective role in Maddie’s life for these reasons. The repeated images of her spending time with or sleeping next to Maddie capture Noah’s graciousness and kind-heartedness. Such moments remind the reader of Noah’s true nature and gesture toward the Redemptive Power of Love from a different perspective. Noah will have to summon this loving part of herself as she continues trying to repair her relationship with Nick and create a life for herself as an empowered individual.
