Noah starts preparing for midterms. In the two months since quitting her job, she’s thrown herself into school and accepted another internship. Jenna finds her in the library and urges her to get coffee. On their way out, they run into Michael. Jenna threatens to call the police and report him for stalking. Noah knows she can’t do anything because she didn’t get a restraining order last year when she should have. She grabs Jenna and drags her out of the library, where she collapses and starts hyperventilating. Jenna threatens to call Nick if Michael shows up again.
Over the next few days, Noah worries about “running into Michael” again (234). She pushes the feelings aside to finish midterms and move into her new off-campus apartment. Before the move, she stays with Jenna and Lion for a few days. They help her with some boxes, but Noah strains her back. Jenna drives Noah to the hospital.
At the hospital, Noah learns she’s pregnant and might be losing the pregnancy. She is shocked. The doctors do an ultrasound and discover the baby is okay, but Noah has “an intrauterine hematoma” (239). They tell her that she almost lost the pregnancy several times in the past four months.
Noah wakes up with Jenna at her bedside. Jenna is thrilled to hear that the baby is Nick’s, but Noah doesn’t want him to know. Nick made it clear that he doesn’t want to be with her, and Noah doesn’t feel ready to be a mother.
The doctors put Noah on bed rest until the hematoma goes away. Jenna takes her back to her house and over the following days, Noah stays in the guest room. She lies in bed, obsessing over what to do. She and Jenna don’t tell Lion about the baby, but Jenna keeps urging Noah to tell Nick. Noah isn’t sure.
Two weeks later, Jenna accompanies Noah to her doctor’s appointment. The baby is healthy, but Noah doesn’t want to learn the sex without Nick. The hematoma is almost gone, but the doctor wants Noah to spend two more weeks in bed. On the way home, Jenna begs Noah to tell Lion and her parents what’s going on, but Noah doesn’t want Nick to find out. Finally, Jenna reveals that she and Lion have been keeping Nick updated on Noah’s life since the breakup. Noah is annoyed but decides to tell Nick about the baby if he comes to Lion’s birthday party next week.
Nick declines Jenna’s invitation to Lion’s party. He’s working on moving back to LA and doesn’t have time to leave the city beforehand. Then Lion calls and reveals that something is wrong with Noah.
Nick gets the first flight back to LA, arriving on the day of the party. He’s shocked to see a pale Noah wrapped in a blanket on the couch. He carries her to the guest room, where she almost tells him about the baby. However, Sophia enters, interrupting the moment.
Noah starts screaming at Sophia. She throws a pillow at her and almost throws a lamp, but Nick stops her. Jenna races in and demands everyone leave. Noah panics that she’s losing the pregnancy because of the stress, but it is okay. Alone afterward, she texts Nick that she’s pregnant.
The next day, Noah demands Jenna take her out for ice cream. On the way, Jenna notices all of Noah’s missed calls and texts from Nick. She insists that Noah explain what’s happening. Instead, Noah texts Nick that the baby is his. When they get home, Nick is waiting outside. He takes Noah for a drive, and she explains what’s happening. He insists he’s coming back to LA, and Noah is moving in with him. Noah protests, tired of him controlling her.
Noah and Nick collect her things from Jenna’s and drive to his house. At his place, Noah gets upset imagining staying where Sophia has stayed. Nick books a hotel room and drives her there instead. At the hotel, they get into an argument about the pregnancy. Noah insists that she didn’t trick him and didn’t know she could have children. She may have missed a birth control pill but isn’t sure. She reminds him that he doesn’t have to be involved. Nick assures her that they are not getting back together, but he wants shared custody.
Nick takes a long drive. He stops for a drink and mulls over his and Noah’s relationship. Then Michael appears, and the two men get into a fight.
Noah takes a car to her apartment, relieved to be alone. She sits by herself, talking to the baby and thinking about her situation. Finally, she texts Nick to leave her alone.
Nick shows up the next morning. He apologizes for what he said and invites her back to the hotel. She gives in. While Nick goes to work, Noah stays up reading Wuthering Heights.
Nick goes to see Sophia, who has been calling repeatedly since Lion’s party. Nick breaks up with her, insisting it’s better to end things before she falls in love with him. Back at his and Noah’s hotel, Nick reads a passage from Wuthering Heights that Noah underlined.
Noah wakes up from a nightmare where she gave birth to a stillborn baby. Nick wakes up and comforts her. She explains how she discovered the pregnancy and what the doctor said about the hematoma. Nick softens, stroking her hair until she falls back to sleep.
The next morning, Steve interrupts Nick and Noah’s breakfast to tell Nick about negative LRB publicity. Afterward, Noah demands to know why Nick’s face is bruised. He reveals the truth and forbids Noah to see Michael.
Noah spends two fitful days at home. Nick returns home late one night to discover she is still awake. They kiss but Nick doesn’t want to go any further.
The next day, Nick accompanies Noah to her ultrasound appointment. They learn that the baby is a boy, and the hematoma is nearly gone. The doctor says Noah can go about her life as usual, but Nick wants her to keep resting. They get into an argument afterward because Noah is tired of Nick controlling her. Nick insists he wants to take care of her and the baby, revealing that he left Sophia. Noah softens. They hug and agree to start over.
Noah moves into Nick’s apartment. Nick reflects on their relationship and his complicated feelings for her. Later, they go to a club with Jenna and Lion to celebrate. Nick notices Noah looks tired. When they leave, Noah says she has to grow up now that she’s a mom. She’s worried about Nick being there for her, but he swears to make her and the baby happy. He kisses her, wishing they could have sex but reminding himself to take it slow.
In Part 3, Noah’s unexpected pregnancy is a plot twist that alters the stakes of her and Nick’s story. Before Noah discovers that she’s pregnant, she is focused on developing a new life without Nick. The pregnancy, however, compels her to return to the past, highlighting how Guilt, Regret, and the Past must still be dealt with before she can move forward.
This plot twist brings Noah and Nick together again as they must work together to navigate the complications of raising a baby together. Noah initially thinks that she will keep the pregnancy from Nick and become a mother on her own. However, because she is “in total denial” when she gets the news, Noah isn’t sure who she is in the context of the baby: “Not my baby—I still couldn’t say that” (246). At 19 years old, Noah is just trying to adjust to adult life. She is working towards her degree, adjusting to a new job, and moving into her first solo apartment off campus. These life changes make Noah feel as if she’s in control, but the pregnancy challenges her Quest for Personal Growth because she must now consider who she wants to be as a mother, with or without Nick. Nick similarly struggles to understand who he is in the context of Noah and the baby once he learns the news. He’s initially determined not to get back into a relationship with Noah but to simply share custody of their child. However, the more time he and Noah spend together in LA after discovering Noah’s pregnancy, the more compelled Noah and Nick are to resolve their differences on behalf of their new family.
The baby symbolizes redemption, love, and change, developing the theme of The Redemptive Power of Love, but it also requires both Noah and Nick to break old patterns of behavior. The news of the baby makes Nick want to “[t]ake care of [Noah], take [her] home with him, [and] give [her] everything he has and more” (249). By way of contrast, the baby makes Noah more protective of her independence. She doesn’t “want anyone to be with [her] because they feel obligated” and has no interest in “forc[ing] [Nick] into forgiving [her]” (249). She still loves and wants “a life with Nick” but also knows her own strength (249). The baby challenges her to trust Nick again and to accept life’s unexpected events. The baby also challenges Nick’s character and asks him to let go of his selfish and possessive tendencies in order to care for his family. In these ways, Noah’s pregnancy offers Nick and Noah the chance to start over and reinvent their relationship. Instead of letting guilt, regret, and the past cloud their dynamic in the present, they must embrace the hope the baby offers and move forward together.
The recurring scenes of Noah on bedrest become a metaphor for how trapped she feels in her internal conflict over Nick. “Being stuck in a room” for weeks “without much to do gives [Noah] lots of time to think” (267). She has no choice but to continue resting for her and the baby’s safety. Her physical circumstances feel increasingly like entrapment as the weeks pass, which in turn makes Noah feel emotionally restless. She is trapped in her thoughts and forced to sit with her questions about the future. While this stretch of time feels physically immobilizing to Noah, it also contributes to her quest for personal growth. She can’t run away from her feelings or distract her mind with work, school, or social outings. Working through her feelings in isolation gradually gives her perspective on what she wants for her baby and from and with Nick.
Noah and Nick’s reconciliation at the end of these chapters foreshadows how their love will redeem them. Noah is initially hesitant to trust Nick again. She doesn’t want him to control her actions, behaviors, and decisions and is wary of relying on him too heavily. Nick is also hesitant to race back into a relationship with Noah because of how she hurt him in the past. However, their conversations about the baby make them realize their new responsibility as adults and potential partners transcends their fears. Their decision to start over is informed by their traumatic pasts—Noah and Nick both come from complex families and have had to overcome significant trials in their childhoods. Noah does not want to abandon or hurt her child the way her parents did her, and Nick doesn’t want to forsake or endanger his child the way his parents did him. They therefore decide to build a family together to transcend their difficult pasts and to offer their baby a better life than they had growing up.
