Chapters 37-56 Analysis

The evolution of Daisy’s feelings for Christian from purely sexual to deeply romantic underscores The Complexities of Navigating Love and Betrayal. Even once Daisy knows how she feels about Christian, Romeo’s sustained presence in London compromises her ability to articulate and act upon her feelings for her new lover. The insecurity and uncertainty Daisy feels with Christian makes her want to cling to the intense personal, romantic, and familial history she has with Romeo, despite having outgrown him. Daisy fears that in being with Christian, she will compromise the security of her age-old connection with Romeo for something far less certain. She questions whether Christian—or anyone—can ever fulfill the comprehensive role Romeo has played in her life. Hastings positions Christian and Romeo as foils of one another. Their contrasting personalities have opposite effects on Daisy’s character—challenging her to examine her own heart to understand what love really means to her.

In this section, Christian’s first-person chapters offer an alternate perspective on Daisy’s version of reality. In Daisy’s chapters, Daisy repeatedly tells herself that Christian doesn’t reciprocate her feelings for him, yet Christian’s alternating chapters prove otherwise. In Daisy’s chapter, her internal monologue reveals that she thinks Christian is genuinely interested in Vanna—a suspicion that confirms her belief that Christian doesn’t care about her romantically. In Christian’s subsequent chapter, Christian’s internal monologue reveals that he doesn’t care about Vanna and can’t stop thinking about Daisy: “I want my hand caught in her hair because there’s too much of it […] That probably should have been the sign…That I like literally being stuck to her, that says something—I’m just an idiot and a slow learner (254). The image of Christian’s ring getting caught in Daisy’s hair signals the strength of the connection he feels to her. Christian enjoys these intimate moments with Daisy because they allow him to feel physically close to her. His internal recognition of his attraction to Daisy and his desire to be with her catalyzes his decision to confess his love to Daisy—marking a turning point in their individual and overlapping storylines.

Daisy and Christian’s burgeoning romance follows a friends-to-lovers arc. Hastings employs this romance trope to give Daisy and Christian’s relationship shape. The two have been close for years, but are just beginning to discover each other as lovers and romantic partners. Their feelings also intensify due to their forced proximity. In the wake of the Belvedere Museum and No Tales shootings, Christian feels compelled to protect Daisy. He knows she’s “had a lifetime of people hovering around her” and “used to think it was stupid and kind of weird” (333), but he now understands that Daisy needs constant supervision. His refusal to leave her side pushes the romantic counterparts together. They spend their time having sex, watching movies, eating food, taking drives, and talking. These shared pastimes strengthen their bond. The more time they’re together, the better they understand one another. Hastings uses these tropes as tools to facilitate the novel’s primary romance.

In Daisy Haites, Magnolia Parks’s character acts as an antagonist who creates conflict between Daisy and Christian. Indeed, when Daisy witnesses Christian’s response to Magnolia at Julian’s birthday dinner, her fears and insecurities return. This is why she breaks up with Christian and takes Romeo home to have sex. Christian’s alleged love for Magnolia renders Daisy powerless. To recover her autonomy, she tries to hurt Christian. Magnolia is a secondary character in Daisy Haites, but her reputation in the Magnolia Parks Universe unsettles the narrative atmosphere and destabilizes Daisy emotionally. Her repeated reappearances in Daisy and Christian’s lives foreshadow a coming conflict. Daisy and Christian will have to reconcile their differences and learn to communicate about their past relationships to foster a sustainable romance together.
