Listener and Clearsight grow closer, although Listener does not understand why Clearsight spends so much time with Darkstalker. Similarly, Clearsight tries to warn Listener about her current crush, but Listener refuses to listen.
One day, Darkstalker invites Clearsight to his house for the first time while his parents are away. He asks her not to look into the future so that he can surprise her. Clearsight notices that Darkstalker’s home seems designed to honor Arctic’s IceWing heritage. Over the fireplace, Whiteout has painted a family portrait, showing them as kinder and closer than they seem in real life. Darkstalker takes Clearsight to his room, revealing a secret drawer designed to stay hidden from Arctic. Darkstalker pulls out a scroll and explains that he has placed all his animus power into it.
Darkstalker tells Clearsight that he no longer has animus magic, which protects his soul, but they can still enchant objects by writing spells on the scroll. Clearsight checks possible futures and sees mostly positive outcomes. She hugs Darkstalker, feeling honored that he sacrificed so much for her.
Clearsight asks Darkstalker to create an object that shields her mind from other mind readers. Although he feels hurt by this demand, Darkstalker agrees and enchants a bracelet for her. They joke about names for their future dragonets, and Darkstalker enchants a blanket to keep Clearsight at the perfect temperature and a history scroll to read aloud to their future dragonets. They laugh together until Arctic suddenly storms in and yells at them.
Clearsight immediately sees a tragic future for Arctic after encountering him. Arctic demands to know if Darkstalker created the enchanted scroll, and Darkstalker admits that he did. Clearsight slips out of view as tension builds between them to hide the scroll from Arctic.
Clearsight sees multiple futures for Arctic, each one dark and grim. After seeing the change in Clearsight’s expression, Arctic demands to know if Clearsight is a seer and what she has seen. Although she tries to resist, a prophecy bursts from her: She says that Arctic must beware of his two queens and that his power will destroy him.
Frustrated that she could not better protect Darkstalker, Clearsight rushes home to study possible outcomes. Along the way, she senses that someone dangerous is coming.
One year after the massacre, Queen Pearl summons Fathom. That year, Indigo joins Pearl’s honor guard. Fathom refuses to take credit for killing Albatross, and the SeaWings treat Indigo as the hero who saved the tribe. Fathom lives in isolation, as the other dragons treat him with suspicion and fear his animus powers. He struggles most with the loss of his friendship with Indigo.
Pearl surprises Fathom by introducing their cousin Current, who survived the massacre but returned deeply traumatized. Pearl explains that Current spent time imprisoned in the Night Kingdom and has only just returned.
Queen Vigilance, worried about Darkstalker, sends Current with a message. She believes that Darkstalker might follow in Albatross’s footsteps. Pearl tells Fathom that he must travel to the Night Kingdom and speak with Darkstalker about the dangers of animus magic.
Indigo questions whether the trip is safe for Fathom, but no one seems concerned about risks to his safety. Indigo offers to accompany Fathom. Though Pearl hesitates, the guards convince her to allow Indigo and two other guards to join him. As Fathom leaves, he catches Indigo’s eye but struggles to understand her feelings.
At home, Arctic announces Darkstalker’s animus powers to the family. Whiteout does not react, but Foeslayer immediately worries. Arctic starts imagining magical objects that could limit Darkstalker’s power. Darkstalker warns Arctic that any further use of animus magic would destroy Arctic’s already damaged soul.
Foeslayer decides that they must inform Queen Vigilance about Darkstalker’s abilities. News spreads quickly because Whiteout talks openly about Darkstalker’s power at school, believing that everyone already knows.
Darkstalker soon finds himself treated with new respect. Queen Vigilance invites him to private meetings to tie him closer to the throne. She encourages him to use his powers to help win the war against the IceWings, but Darkstalker promises to weigh every spell carefully to protect his soul.
Darkstalker and his family receive invitations to royal events, though Clearsight refuses to attend, frustrating Darkstalker. Before a party, Darkstalker uses his enchanted earring to enhance his charm. He knows his parents are hiding something from him, but they refuse to explain when he questions them. Whiteout, as usual, stays home uninvited, as most NightWings find her uncomfortable to be around.
At the party, Queen Vigilance introduces Darkstalker to Fathom. Darkstalker senses Arctic’s thoughts and hints that an IceWing attack might happen soon, but Arctic vanishes before Darkstalker can confront him.
Darkstalker reads Fathom’s and Indigo’s thoughts and realizes that Fathom possesses animus magic. He sees flashes of the SeaWing massacre through Fathom’s memories and recognizes that the party brings deep pain to the SeaWing delegation. To help them escape the party for a while, Darkstalker offers a tour of the Royal Tower. Although Fathom and Indigo follow him, they fear that Darkstalker might plan to kill them. Darkstalker tries to reassure them that he wants friendship, not violence. However, he quickly realizes that Fathom and Indigo only see Albatross when they look at him, not the dragon he truly is.
Darkstalker encourages Fathom to use magic to heal his grief, but Indigo stops Darkstalker by holding a knife to his throat. As Fathom and Indigo argue, Darkstalker prepares to kill Indigo. However, after glimpsing the future, he decides that it would cause too much trouble. Instead, Darkstalker vows to kill Indigo later when the time is right and Fathom will no longer mourn her.
While Darkstalker is at the party, Clearsight and Listener sneak into the NightWing school to free the captured scavengers. However, the scavengers panic when the dragons try to help; the scavengers fight back, making the rescue difficult. Clearsight and Listener eventually manage to collect all six scavengers into burlap sacks and slip through the halls without being seen.
After escaping, they realize that they have no clear plan about where to take the freed scavengers. Since leaving the Night Kingdom is dangerous for them, they decide to release the scavengers on North Beach. The dragons hope that the scavengers can swim to the Kingdom of Sand across the bay.
When they set the scavengers free, a few throw rocks at Listener and Clearsight. Clearsight has a sudden vision and warns Listener to duck. They hide and watch two IceWings emerge from the sea. One IceWing kills one of the scavengers, while the other orders him back into the water.
Clearsight sees visions of a future where the IceWings use this secret route to launch a surprise attack on the Night Kingdom. Horrified, she realizes that these IceWings are scouts preparing for war. Although Clearsight believes that she can prevent disaster by warning the queen, visions of terrible futures overwhelm her, showing how difficult it will be to stop what is coming. Clearsight promises to keep Listener out of her report to Queen Vigilance.
The theme of The Triumph of Free Will Over Fate is central to these chapters. Darkstalker and Clearsight both have rare and powerful gifts, but instead of liberating them, these abilities often trap them. Darkstalker proudly shows Clearsight his enchanted scroll, explaining that he placed all his animus magic into it to protect his soul. This decision seems wise and offers him a fresh start. Clearsight even checks the future and sees mostly positive outcomes. However, even as they laugh together and dream about their future dragonets, the novel hints that Darkstalker’s fate may not be as bright as he believes. Additionally, this moment is rich in dramatic irony for readers familiar with the Wings of Fire series since future events make it clear that magical safeguards like the scroll will not protect Darkstalker from corruption. Later chapters show that animus powers can only destroy the soul when used to do harm, underscoring that his personal choices to wreak violence will lead to his dark destiny.
Clearsight’s visions add another dimension to this theme. She tries to control events by studying countless possible futures. When she first meets Arctic, she sees a dark future for him but cannot prevent herself from blurting out a prophecy that warns him of his downfall. This will lead Arctic to take measures that will cause new violence. Clearsight constantly tries to fix the future, yet her actions often create new dangers. Her belief that she can control fate belies the fact that she cannot control others’ choices, highlighting the power of free will in each situation.
The theme of The Corrupting Influence of Power also becomes sharper in these chapters, primarily through Darkstalker’s evolving mindset. At first, he appears noble: He willingly gives up his animus magic for Clearsight, he charms the royals at parties, and he even attempts to rescue Fathom and Indigo from awkwardness. However, his darker instincts quickly surface when Indigo holds a knife to him. Although he seems to smile and diffuse the situation, Darkstalker silently vows to kill Indigo later, when it will be safer to do so. This moment is critical: Darkstalker does not question whether killing Indigo is wrong; he only calculates its convenience. This moment shows that evil rarely emerges suddenly. Instead, Darkstalker’s malicious tendencies grow slowly, fed by pride, anger, and the belief that his own desires are more important than others’ lives.
Fathom’s and Indigo’s presences reinforce this theme. Still traumatized by Albatross’s massacre, they cannot separate Darkstalker from their fears, even though he has never harmed them. Their distrust is both reasonable and tragic. Darkstalker desperately wants to be seen as different from Albatross, but his simmering anger and hidden intentions show that he is likely to repeat the same terrible mistakes since he is under the sway of his own power.
Finally, The Dangers of Arrogance and Domination play a critical role in these chapters. Darkstalker’s interactions with Queen Vigilance reveal how quickly power attracts attention and manipulation. Once the NightWings know he is an animus, the queen invites him to royal meetings, showers him with attention, and offers him a place at court. Darkstalker, who already wrestles with pride, enjoys his new influence and status, even though he pretends to act cautiously. Queen Vigilance seeks to harness Darkstalker’s abilities for her own political goals, just as Queen Lagoon once used Albatross. The queen seeks to control Darkstalker’s power, ignoring the lessons of the past—attempts to dominate always lead to death and danger.
Arctic’s role in these chapters likewise reflects the dangers of arrogance and domination. Arctic, who was once rebellious himself and tried to escape the IceWing rules, now tries to control Darkstalker’s magic and choices. Instead of trusting his son, he imagines magical restrictions that he can impose on Darkstalker and fears what his son might become. Arctic’s suspicion and resentment poison their relationship, just as Queen Vigilance’s political maneuvering poisons Darkstalker’s chance for an innocent future. By closing off the possibility of trust, Arctic pushes Darkstalker down a dangerous path.
