Chapter 53 Summary

Scarlett and Lukas travel to Amsterdam for World Aquatics. Scarlett is enchanted by the city as she and Lukas spend some time exploring. They meet up at the aquatics center where they run into another swimmer with whom, Lukas admits, he and Pen had a threesome. They tried to mix up their sex life by inviting thirds. Lukas says Pen always found their thirds until Lukas noticed Scarlett and suggested they invite her to join them; Pen didn’t end up asking because Scarlett was with Josh at the time. Scarlett is surprised but flattered.

Chapter 54 Summary

The next day, Scarlett and Lukas meet back up in Lukas’s room. Lukas gets worried when he notices bruises on Scarlett’s body and insists on tending to them. They talk about different dives and swimming strokes. Scarlett reveals that she hopes she and Lukas end up at the same med school. Lukas agrees but admits that he’s not deferring his acceptance to compete in the Olympics again next year. This is going to be his last year because he has other things he wants to accomplish. He also wants to spend his life with someone he loves. Scarlett starts crying, insisting she’s fine although she’s unsure if she is.

On the way home, Lukas notices that Scarlett has him saved in her phone as “Scarlett Penelope.” He takes it and changes the contact name. After they land, Scarlett agrees to spend the night at Lukas’s. When they arrive, Lukas’s friends are hosting a surprise party. Scarlett and Lukas chat alone until Pen interrupts, insisting she has to talk to Lukas privately. Scarlett gets a cab home. She feels anxious until she realizes Lukas has saved himself as “Lukas Scarlett” in her phone.

Chapter 57 Summary

During therapy, Scarlett talks about her upcoming meets. She has two competitions before the NCAA championships. Sam is proud of Scarlett’s positive outlook. Afterward, Scarlett meets up with Pen who apologizes for pushing Scarlett out of the party—she wanted to talk to Lukas because Theo broke up with her. Pen’s disappointed because Theo was much more emotional than Lukas—Pen has remarked on Lukas’s coldness for months, but Scarlett can never understand what she means. Pen expresses regret for breaking up with Lukas and asks if he and Scarlett are officially dating. Scarlett reluctantly admits that they’re not.

Chapter 58 Summary

Scarlett talks to Sam about the situation with Pen and Lukas. Sam suggests that Pen is attached to him because they bonded over their trauma when they were kids—a distinctly different connection than Lukas has with Scarlett.

After her session, Scarlett returns home to find Lukas waiting for her. She’s been ignoring him ever since her conversation with Pen. She expresses concern that he and Pen might be better suited. Lukas insists otherwise and the two have sex. Afterward, he reminds Scarlett she has nothing to be afraid of.

Scarlett meets up with Lukas at the aquatic center in the days before the NCAA championship. They break away from Lukas’s friends and have sex in a meeting room. Immediately afterward, Pen calls Lukas. She tested positive for doping. Lukas and Scarlett race out to find her.

Chapter 61 Summary

Lukas and Scarlett pick up Pen. On the drive, they try to make sense of her drug test. She’s frantic and can’t explain the results. Scarlett reassures her, inviting her to stay at her house. Lukas insists that he’s in love with Scarlett and tells her that he wants to be with her forever. She cuts him off, using their safe word, and begs him to give her space.

Chapter 52-Epilogue Analysis

The final chapters of Deep End lead Scarlett’s narrative through its climax, descending action, denouement, and resolution. Throughout the entirety of the novel, Scarlett has been on a Journey Toward Growth, Healing, and Self-Empowerment. Her narrative follows a clear linear plot line, establishing a clear chronological scaffolding for her otherwise meandering story. In these final sequences of her junior year, Scarlett encounters and overcomes a series of conflicts that help her claim who she is and what she wants without shame. These closing chapters lead Scarlett out of her trauma and into a brighter, more resolved future.

The NCAA championships act as the novel’s climax. This event is significant to Scarlett because the last time she competed, she severely injured herself, positioning the championships as a trigger for her anxiety. However, because Scarlett has done so much personal work throughout the months preceding the championship, she feels more excited than afraid in the days leading up to the NCAA, evidencing her personal growth. The scenes of her enjoying herself in the pool and discussing her meets and trials openly with Lukas, Pen, and Sam capture her newfound peace of mind. When she returns from Amsterdam in Chapter 57, for example, she tells Sam, “I didn’t medal, which is disappointing […] but I’m not going to let it define me. I’m excited about the season. I’m ready to be as strong as I can be” (374). Her tone is both buoyant and determined, acknowledging that she has room for growth without allowing her slip-ups to undermine her self-worth. She’s able to maintain this outlook throughout the meets leading up to the NCAA—a shift in perspective that underscores the interconnection between her mind and body. When she stays mentally positive, she’s able to trust her body and do well. Winning the NCAA reinforces Scarlett’s sense of self while reminding her that she’s worthy of love and acceptance independent of diving, too.

Structurally, Scarlett’s conflicts with Lukas and Pen in the novel’s closing chapters augment the narrative pacing in anticipation of its resolution. Pen’s anger with Lukas and Scarlett introduces a final obstacle to Scarlett and Lukas’s deepening relationship and ultimately tests the strength of their bond. The author uses this conflict to challenge Scarlett to stand up for herself and claim what she wants and needs. Instead of letting Pen or Lukas have the final word in the post-NCAA locker room scene, Scarlett uses her safe word and articulates her need for space. She then exercises her agency by leaving California to spend time at home. Returning to St. Louis offers her perspective on her life and relationships in California and lets her reclaim her autonomy independent of her friend and sexual partner. As a result, Scarlett can forgive Pen and reunite with Lukas at the tail end of her St. Louis visit—a trip that has helped her remember who she is and recenter herself.

Scarlett and Lukas’s reunion in Sweden offers them their happily-ever-after, which links the novel’s thematic interest in the Exploration of BDSM Within Consensual Relationships to a deep emotional bond grounded in trust and openness. Hazelwood reinforces Deep End’s identity as a contemporary romance novel by granting her protagonists their traditional happy ending. In Sweden, Scarlett and Lukas not only fulfill their fantasy of visiting Lukas’s home together, but they make amends, work out their miscommunications, and profess their love for each other for the first time. These dynamics reinforce the positive, balanced, and trustworthy relationship they’ve fostered over their year together.
