Chapter 15 Summary

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of sexual content.

Scarlett drafts a personal essay for her med school applications and shares it with Maryam. Maryam suggests she be more direct about her experiences, but Scarlett isn’t sure she can. At practice afterward, Scarlett’s glad to see Pen, who congratulates Scarlett on her research project that she heard about from Lukas. She admits they’re still good friends but aren’t ready to tell people about their breakup. They met when they were 16 and Pen is still attached to him even if she doesn’t want to date him anymore.

The friends run into Lukas after practice. Scarlett tries to ignore how attracted she feels to him. She’s also surprised when she notices the scientific map she drew on Lukas’s hand over dinner is still there. (She was explaining a neural network to him regarding their project.) She texts him afterward asking about it and he teases that it’s his good luck charm. Scarlett understands because her tie-dye shammy is lucky, too.

Chapter 16 Summary

Scarlett tells Sam that Victoria was injured during practice. Sam wants to know how this makes Scarlett feel. Scarlett says she’s worried about Victoria but isn’t personally afraid of the dangers of diving (96). However, she can’t answer Sam’s question about what she is afraid of.

Chapter 17 Summary

Scarlett, Zach, and Lukas meet up to work on their project. During the meeting, Lukas grabs Scarlett’s ankle under the table and holds onto her. She tries dismissing fantasies about sex with Lukas to focus. Toward the end of the meeting, Zach asks Scarlett about her relationship status. Afterward, Lukas remarks on the exchange, insisting Scarlett can’t tell when someone is interested in her.

Chapter 18 Summary

At practice one morning, Scarlett prepares to do an inward dive. Once she hits the water, she realizes she did a back tuck instead of an inward. Coach Sima calls Scarlett into his office and reveals that Victoria is out for the season; he wants Scarlett to replace Victoria as Pen’s synchro (synchronized diving) partner. Overwhelmed, Scarlett tears up.

Chapter 19 Summary

Scarlett feels exhausted after taking the MCAT but attends Bree and Bella’s birthday party anyway. On the way, Pen reassures Scarlett about her MCAT results and reveals that Lukas took it last year and scored “in the ninety-ninth percentile” (109). She also reveals that she’s started seeing her former TA, Theo.

Chapter 20 Summary

Scarlett feels uncomfortable at the party. She’s never been very social and isn’t used to crowds. She makes eye contact with Lukas across the room and excuses herself to a sunroom upstairs to get some space. She checks her email, discouraged when she sees a message from her German professor about getting extra help. Lukas appears. They chat about the MCAT and school. Then Lukas asks how she felt about his email and if she wants to have sex. They discuss how they feel about BDSM and Scarlett shares her hesitations. Lukas promises to drop the issue if she says no but promises to meet her anywhere at any time if she’s interested. When she doesn’t say anything, he leaves. Back downstairs, Scarlett notices Lukas across the room again. She realizes she does want to be with him and texts him asking when and where he wants to meet.

Chapter 21 Summary

Scarlett doesn’t hear from Lukas for 24 hours. She runs into him after Monday morning practice. He gives her a folded piece of paper. She blushes when she discovers it’s “a list of the filthiest things two people can do to each other” (126). He tells her they should each fill out their own list of things they like and want to try and exchange them. They walk across campus together, the topic shifting to their research project.

That afternoon, Scarlett and Pen have their first synchro practice. Coach Sima is displeased with their performance, but the friends laugh and joke to diffuse the tension.

Chapter 22 Summary

Two days later, Scarlett finishes her list. She and Lukas meet up at the library to exchange them. When Lukas sees hers, he grabs her and pushes her against the wall, and they kiss passionately.

Chapter 23 Summary

Scarlett gets swept up in the kiss. Lukas tells her that he wants everything she wants. However, he doesn’t get to show her his list before he has to go to a swim meeting. He leaves it with her, making her promise she’ll read it before they meet up again. Scarlett agrees but shares her concerns about starting a sexual relationship before telling Pen. Lukas insists he’ll talk to her. That night, Scarlett reads Lukas’s list in bed.

Chapter 24 Summary

After practice, Scarlett gets a text from Penelope saying they have to talk. Scarlett is nervous, convinced Penelope will hate her if she starts seeing Lukas. Instead, Penelope tells Scarlett she knew she and Lukas would be sexually compatible. She also shares more about her relationship with Theo. The friends laugh and joke.

Chapter 25 Summary

Scarlett has lunch with Pen and works on homework. She’s still struggling with German but feels more confident after meeting with her professor. Later, she goes to the lab to work on her project. Lukas shows up and they chat about their conversations with Pen. The topic shifts to Lukas’s family. He shows her pictures of his brothers and explains his relationship with his dad. Then they talk about their lists and their reasons for liking BDSM. Lukas makes sure she feels comfortable, and Scarlett says she wants him to be in control. He tells her to perform oral sex on him, which Scarlett does. After he orgasms, Lukas touches Scarlett too, insisting they leave the lab and go to his place instead.

Chapter 26 Summary

Scarlett and Lukas discuss their research project while walking across campus. Lukas is impressed by how knowledgeable Scarlett is. The topic shifts to their past relationships. Scarlett is surprised by how little Lukas knows about diving given his relationship with Pen. Lukas is surprised to hear that Josh broke up with Scarlett.

Chapters 15-26 Analysis

Scarlett and Lukas’s evolving dynamic highlights the Exploration of BDSM Within Consensual Relationships as a central theme in the novel. Scarlett and Lukas have been intrigued by each other ever since learning that they have overlapping sexual preferences. They begin to communicate more openly about their shared interest in exploring BDSM throughout these chapters. These conversations are founded upon mutual trust and understanding. However, even before the characters overtly begin to entertain the idea of a sexual relationship, Scarlett’s first-person narration reveals her comfort around and attraction to Lukas. When she sees him at the aquatic center in Chapter 15, she privately realizes that there’s “just this kinship [she] feel[s] for him” (91). When he holds onto her ankle during their research meeting in Chapter 17, she silently muses on how much she “enjoy[s] the strength behind his grip. His size. The ease with which he could overpower [her]” (101). Such moments lay the narrative and emotional groundwork for Scarlett and Lukas to foster a trusting, consensual relationship. Hazelwood uses Scarlett’s interiority to narratively enact her self-possession, power, and control within a submissive sexual role. She doesn’t feel manipulated or abused by Lukas but is owning her sexual preferences and fantasies. Her ability to privately claim what she wants shows that she’s voluntarily pursuing opportunities to explore kink on her own terms with Lukas.

Scarlett and Lukas’s intimate scenes of dialogue throughout this section further underscore the trust required to establish healthy, mutually exciting BDSM relationships. In Chapter 20, for example, the characters have an open exchange in the upstairs sunroom at Bree and Bella’s party—a private location, removed from the rest of the social gathering that affects an intimate mood. Through subtext, the setting also reinforces the notion that Scarlett and Lukas have ideas about sex that set them apart from their peers. At the same time, the sunroom offers the characters the time and space to discuss what they want and need and how they might be together.

Lukas’s direct way of communicating with Scarlett empowers her to open up and be equally direct. By overtly acknowledging his feelings and remarking upon their developing dynamic, Lukas helps Scarlett feel the freedom to do the same:

You’re at ease with me. I don’t think you realize it, but you tend to move closer when others are around. Sometimes you look to me, for reassurance maybe. And we’re alone right now and there are no signs of distress, and—at some point you chose to trust me, and you get why that gets me going so hard, right? (120).

Lukas doesn’t shy away from his feelings. His character understands that reciprocal trust and communication are foundational aspects of BDSM. He isn’t pressuring Scarlett into a relationship she might be uncomfortable with but simply naming his feelings so she feels safe enough to do the same. Scarlett’s internal, narrative response to Lukas’s words makes clear that he’s fulfilling her fantasies and offering new, healthy ways to explore her sexuality. Scarlett notes that “for people like [her], like him—like [them]—trust is the real currency” (120). She realizes that she trusts him and that Lukas trusts her, which gives her the courage to initiate their first sexual encounter by the party’s end.

Scarlett and Lukas’s communication patterns usher them into a new, exploratory sexual relationship that ultimately fuels Scarlett’s Journey Toward Growth, Healing, and Self-Empowerment. The sex scene in the lab in Chapter 25 initiates their physical relationship and marks a turning point in Scarlett’s arc. Throughout the novel thus far, Scarlett has struggled to feel in control of her life. She fears that her falling grades and poor diving performance are evidence that her efforts aren’t enough and that she’s a categorical failure. However, when she starts having sex with Lukas, she finds a safe place where she knows the rules and can do well. In giving up her power to Lukas, she finds a new strength and sense of prowess. While she still has work to do on her mental block and academic performance, embracing a relationship with Lukas ushers her toward change and progress. She begins learning how to relax her control of life and to give in to the moment to experience pleasure and connection.
