Defy Me

Defy Me picks up immediately after a catastrophic symposium at Sector 45, a military base governed by the authoritarian regime known as The Reestablishment. Juliette, who previously declared herself ruler of North America, loses control of her powers onstage, releasing seismic energy that appears to kill six hundred audience members. Kenji, her closest friend and a resistance fighter with the power of invisibility, rushes to her side and finds her catatonic. Before he can drag her to safety, his vision blacks out and Juliette vanishes from his arms. When he looks around, the audience members begin to stir with only superficial injuries, as if the massacre was an illusion. Warner, the former chief commander of Sector 45 who turned against The Reestablishment for Juliette, has also disappeared. Kenji and the remaining members of Omega Point, their rebel cell, flee the building on foot, shielded by an unseen ally's invisibility.

Interspersed with the present crisis are flashback chapters revealing that Warner and Juliette knew each other as children. In one memory, a seven-year-old Aaron (Warner's first name) confides in a girl named Ella about his father Anderson's physical abuse. In another, a young Ella meets Anderson's son before being placed with an adoptive family; Anderson, posing as her social worker, introduces the terrified girl under the alias "Juliette."

Back at Sector 45, the Omega Point members regroup. Ian and Lily, fellow resistance fighters, argue the group must evacuate: without Juliette and Warner, The Reestablishment will reclaim the sector. James, the ten-year-old brother of Adam (Anderson's illegitimate son), proposes the apparent mass killing was staged to cover a kidnapping. Castle, the leader of Omega Point, agrees and cues an invisible figure to reveal herself.

Nazeera, the daughter of a supreme commander, drops her invisibility and shares childhood photographs proving Juliette's real name is Ella Sommers, daughter of Evie and Maximillian Sommers. Evie is the supreme commander of Oceania. Ella and her sister Emmaline were donated to The Reestablishment as children; Ella was given the alias Juliette Ferrars and placed with abusive adoptive parents. All the children of the supreme commanders had their memories systematically wiped. One photograph shows a toddler-aged Ella beside a small blond boy unmistakably a young Warner, proving they knew each other long before their supposed first meeting.

Nazeera argues the staged massacre was designed to make Ella appear unstable, making her easy to capture. She estimates the group has twenty-four hours. She reveals that some commanders' children, including her brother Haider, are recovering memories and searching for a way out. Nazeera decides to stay because she believes she knows where Ella and Warner are being held.

Delalieu, Anderson's longtime lieutenant, arrives and pledges to keep the group safe for up to a week. He reveals he is Warner's maternal grandfather. Under questioning, he confesses that Anderson deliberately placed Ella with abusive parents to accelerate her powers and repeatedly wiped both Aaron's and Ella's memories because Aaron was always drawn to her no matter how many times their introductions were reset. Just as Delalieu begins explaining Operation Synthesis, a secret initiative involving figures codenamed "the Architect and the Executioner," Anderson, who has survived his earlier injuries, shoots him between the eyes.

Anderson reveals a traitor in their midst has kept him informed; the group turns to look at Nazeera, who stands apart expressionless. In the collective shock, Kenji is tranquilized. He wakes after an estimated one to two weeks in a dark prison cell with glowing blue handcuffs that strip his powers.

Extended flashbacks reveal that at sixteen, Warner discovered Juliette in a holding cell after she was arrested for accidentally killing a boy with her lethal touch. He visited her secretly for a month until Anderson caught them and threatened to kill her. Two years later, after a brutal assignment that left Warner with nightmares and suicidal thoughts, Anderson ordered him to rehabilitate and weaponize Juliette as his first task as chief commander, intending to break Warner's emotional attachment by making him her oppressor.

In the present, Warner endures weeks of poisoned food and isolation on the Oceania compound. Ella's captivity under Evie is harrowing. Evie performs invasive procedures, injecting syringes into Ella's temple to erase her memories and subjecting her body to painful surgical modifications. Evie reveals that Emmaline, the "superior specimen," has deteriorated and needs to be replaced, and lets slip that Warner is still alive. Critically, Evie's attempt to wipe Ella's mind fails. Over two weeks Ella's memories return, but she conceals this, playing the amnesiac patient.

A voice in Ella's mind, later revealed as Emmaline communicating telepathically, guides her through the compound to a hidden underground laboratory. There Ella discovers Emmaline imprisoned in a massive glass cylinder filled with water, her body grotesquely transformed by years of experimentation. Through physical contact with the glass, Ella receives Emmaline's memories. Their parents' attempts to enhance Emmaline's telekinetic abilities, the power to move and influence matter with the mind, backfired: her mind grew stronger, but her body and spirit deteriorated. When Emmaline overheard her parents discussing Ella's resistance, she began using her remaining strength to contact Ella and the other commanders' children, returning their stolen memories. Emmaline begs Ella to kill her, but Ella refuses. Emmaline remotely unlocks Ella's power-suppressing manacles just before Evie arrives armed. Ella, consumed by rage, kills her biological mother.

On the eve of Warner's twentieth birthday, Anderson visits his cell and explains he survived earlier wounds because Evie replicated the healing powers of Sonya and Sara, twin Omega Point members who can heal through touch, and integrated the ability into his DNA. Anderson shows Warner footage of Ella being tortured, claiming her mind has been permanently wiped. Devastated, Warner throws a letter opener into Anderson's neck, takes two concealed guns, and walks away. He is tranquilized and wakes healed in a medical room. Anderson, having survived again, returns with a bandaged throat. Supreme Commander Ibrahim, one of The Reestablishment's regional leaders, bursts in to announce Evie is dead. Nazeera whispers invisibly in Warner's ear: Kenji is getting Ella onto a plane, and Warner must run.

Nazeera's apparent betrayal at Sector 45, where suspicion fell on her as Anderson's informant, is revealed as a ruse. She used the group's capture to track Anderson, steal a plane, and rescue Kenji, bringing him to Oceania. They split up: Kenji retrieves Ella, who is covered in blood, and gets her to the plane. Warner escapes with Nazeera's help; when Ibrahim shoots him in the calf, Warner draws on the partial healing ability now accessible through proximity to his father's modified DNA. With seconds to spare, Nazeera carries Warner aboard.

On the flight, Ella and Warner reunite tearfully. She apologizes for how she left things between them; he assures her none of it matters. Two engines are destroyed as they approach North American airspace. The four passengers jump, relying on Nazeera's flight ability amplified by Warner's power. They land safely in an ash-covered field and are met by Castle and his long-lost daughter Nouria, who leads a hidden resistance called the Sanctuary. Nouria can manipulate light to create barriers making the campsite invisible. The plane was deliberately shot down by the Sanctuary as the only way to bring them in without detection. All Omega Point members have been freed through coordination between Nazeera, Haider, and Stephan, the son of the supreme commander of Africa.

Ella reveals the full truth about Operation Synthesis. Emmaline is kept permanently submerged, her brain waves connected to turbines that convert her mental energy into electricity projected worldwide. The environmental devastation the world endures is largely an illusion created through Emmaline's telekinetic projections; the real damage is reparable, not the irreversible catastrophe The Reestablishment claims. By engineering hopelessness, The Reestablishment kept the population desperate and controllable. Emmaline was "the Architect" of this false reality; Ella was designed to be "the Executioner," a replacement weapon. Ella declares she must kill Emmaline to end the illusion.

In their quarters at the Sanctuary, Warner proposes without a ring, telling Ella it might kill him if he does not ask. She accepts through tears. The novel closes with a surprise birthday celebration for Warner, his first ever, organized by Ella and Kenji. Ella knew Anderson tortured Warner on every birthday and swore to replace those memories. A modest cake and candles await in the dining tent, surrounded by all their allies. Warner is visibly moved. Ella reflects on the battles ahead but chooses to celebrate, framing joy itself as what they are fighting for: a second chance at happiness.
