Plot Summary

Wheeler Rankin, co-CEO of the cowboy boot company Bellamy Brooks, visits Lucky Ranch in Hartsville, Texas, to see her best friend and business partner, Mollie Luck. She is immediately drawn to Duke Rivers, the handsome and charming brother of Mollie’s boyfriend, Cash. Wheeler, whose parents are going through an acrimonious divorce and who has been conditioned by her family to believe she is "too much," is wary of emotional intimacy and only seeks a no-strings-attached fling. At a family dinner, Mollie proposes merging her inherited Lucky Ranch with the neighboring Rivers Ranch, creating Lucky River Ranch. Afterward, Cash proposes to Mollie, and she accepts. The group celebrates at a local dive bar called the Rattler, where Wheeler and Duke spend the evening flirting and playing darts. They share a deep conversation about their ambitions and family pressures, and Duke feels seen by Wheeler in a way he never has before. As their connection deepens, Duke expresses his desire to know everything about her. This frightens Wheeler, who fears rejection. She abruptly ends the night, claiming she is tired, and leaves the bar alone.

In the following months, Wheeler splits her time between Dallas and the ranch, actively avoiding Duke. Meanwhile, Bellamy Brooks gets two major opportunities, a feature in Elle magazine and a trunk show at Aspen Leather Company. In April, Mollie, now pregnant and on bed rest, is unable to travel to the Aspen show. Wheeler plans to drive a U-Haul full of boots to Colorado by herself, despite a blizzard warning. Concerned for her safety and eager for an escape, Duke insists on accompanying her. During the long drive, their easy chemistry returns as they reconnect through personal stories and shared jokes. They arrive in Aspen just as the blizzard intensifies and make it to a luxurious mountain cabin owned by Wheeler's family friends. The storm worsens, knocking out the power and trapping them inside. To distract themselves, they drink wine, play "slap the bag," and dance to '90s music videos. The flirtation escalates, but Wheeler once again becomes overwhelmed by the intimacy and retreats to her bedroom alone.

Later that night, a loud crash awakens Wheeler. Duke, completely naked, rushes to her room to make sure she is safe. He suggests they move to his bedroom in the basement for safety from falling trees. The room is freezing, so Wheeler asks him to get in bed with her for warmth. Cuddled together, Wheeler confides in Duke about her father's bad temper, which explains her fear of loud noises. The emotional and physical intimacy leads to a passionate night of sex. The trunk show is canceled due to the storm, so they spend the entire weekend snowed in, deepening their connection. On the drive back to Texas, another passionate encounter occurs in the U-Haul. Afterward, Duke asks Wheeler on a real date, but she turns him down, explaining that her parents' messy divorce makes her unwilling to pursue a serious relationship. Three weeks later, Wheeler, who has been avoiding Duke, begins experiencing pregnancy symptoms. With Mollie's help, she takes two positive home pregnancy tests. Cash accidentally walks in and discovers the situation but promises to keep it secret. Overwhelmed, Wheeler returns to Dallas to process the news alone.

Confused by Wheeler's avoidance, Duke learns she is pregnant when his brother Cash accidentally lets it slip. Worried, Duke gets her address from Mollie and drives to Dallas. He finds Wheeler being cared for by her supportive younger brother, Haines. Duke reassures her that he is not angry and wants to face the situation with her. He accompanies her to a doctor's appointment that confirms the pregnancy. They grow closer while brainstorming ideas for a Bellamy Brooks men's collection. Duke convinces Wheeler to return to the ranch so his family can care for her while they decide what to do. At Duke's newly renovated cottage, the Rivers family welcomes her warmly. A conversation with Mollie helps Wheeler realize her relationship with Duke is built on a foundation of friendship, unlike her parents' marriage, which gives her hope for their future.

The sexual tension between them reignites when Duke walks in on Wheeler masturbating in the shower, leading to another passionate night. Wheeler agrees to go on a real date with Duke to a fundraiser at his niece's preschool. At the event, she feels a strong sense of belonging with his family and friends. Afterward, Wheeler tells Duke she wants to keep the baby, and he joyfully confesses he wants the same. They officially become boyfriend and girlfriend. Wheeler and Mollie offer Duke a partnership in Bellamy Brooks to lead the new men's collection, which he accepts. At their nine-week ultrasound, they hear the baby's heartbeat, and Wheeler tells Duke she loves him. He reciprocates her feelings.

Wheeler's parents and older brother, Preston, visit the ranch. Her father, Tim, and Preston are critical and rude. When Wheeler and Duke announce the pregnancy at dinner, Tim explodes in anger, as the situation mirrors his own shotgun wedding. Duke calmly but firmly stands up to Tim, defending Wheeler and demanding respect. The confrontation is a turning point for Wheeler, who feels protected and loved. Her mother, Frannie, and brother, Haines, offer their full support. Months later, at the wedding of one of Duke's brothers, Wheeler feels the baby move for the first time. During a game of darts, she playfully tells Duke that if she hits a bullseye, he must promise to marry her. He agrees, revealing he has been ready to marry her since they first met.

An epilogue reveals that a surprise second heartbeat was discovered at their twenty-week ultrasound, and Duke and Wheeler are now the parents of newborn fraternal twins, a boy named Robert Haines and a girl named Margaret Rose. Their home is filled with gifts from their supportive found family. A bonus epilogue, set five years later, shows the happily married couple and their twins on a family trip to California, successfully balancing their careers, love, and family life.
