Plot Summary

The story opens with a brief flash-forward to a tense moment in a forest clearing. Bella Swan watches as her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen, prepares to defend her against an unseen, outnumbered threat. She knows his family is fighting for their own lives elsewhere and that their enemy is waiting for a moment of distraction to kill her. In the distance, a wolf howls.

The narrative then returns to the present, where Bella receives a letter from her best friend, Jacob Black, a Quileute werewolf. He formally ends their friendship, stating that his pack and the Cullen vampire family are mortal enemies. Bella's father, Charlie Swan, lifts her long-standing grounding on the condition that she balances her time with Edward by also seeing her other friends, particularly Jacob. During their conversation, Charlie mentions a string of unsolved homicides in Seattle. When Edward arrives, he and Bella argue about college applications and the timing of her transformation into a vampire. Bella is anxious to be changed soon, citing threats from the vengeful vampire Victoria and the vampire ruling class, the Volturi. Edward, however, wants her to have more human experiences first. He reveals the Seattle killings are the work of an out-of-control newborn vampire and forbids Bella from seeing Jacob, citing the danger and the treaty between their kinds.

At school, Edward’s sister, Alice, who can see the future, has a vision that Edward conceals from Bella. He then manipulates Charlie into allowing him to take Bella to visit her mother, Renée, in Florida for the weekend. During the trip, Renée expresses concern over the intensity of Bella and Edward's relationship. Bella’s attempt to sneak away to La Push to see Jacob is thwarted by Edward, who disables her truck after Alice foresees her plan. The next day, Jacob confronts Edward at school, revealing that the Cullens had been hunting Victoria, which was the real reason for the Florida trip.

Bella later escapes Alice's "babysitting" and goes to La Push. There, she and Jacob discuss the recent hunt for Victoria and the history of the Quileute legends, including the concept of "imprinting," where a werewolf finds his soul mate. Jacob confesses that he is in love with Bella. When Bella confirms her intention to become a vampire, an enraged Jacob tells her he would rather see her dead. A devastated Bella leaves. Later, she discovers that several personal items have been stolen from her room. Edward realizes an unknown vampire has taken them to get her scent, leading to a temporary truce between the Cullens and the wolf pack. In an effort to change her mind, Edward's sister, Rosalie, shares her tragic human story and pleads with Bella to choose the human life that was stolen from her.

As graduation approaches, the news from Seattle worsens, with the death toll now at 39. The Cullens realize they are dealing with an army of newborn vampires. Edward's brother, Jasper, recounts his own past as a soldier in the violent southern vampire wars, where such armies were used for conquest. Jacob kisses Bella against her will. She punches him in the face and breaks her hand. An angry Edward warns Jacob to never touch Bella again. On graduation day, Bella connects the intruder and the newborn army, realizing her stolen scent is being used to lead them to her. At her graduation party, Alice has a vision confirming the army is coming to Forks. The Cullens and the Quileute wolves form an alliance to fight them.

The Cullens and the wolf pack train together, with Jasper instructing them on how to fight newborns. They devise a plan: Bella will lay a false scent trail to a clearing for an ambush. Jacob will then carry her to a remote mountain campsite to hide her, his own scent masking hers. At the campsite, a severe blizzard hits, and Bella begins to suffer from hypothermia. To save her, Edward allows Jacob to get into the sleeping bag with her to warm her with his high body temperature. While Bella is semi-conscious, Edward and Jacob have a frank and surprisingly civil conversation about their love for Bella and their mutual jealousy. Jacob overhears Edward tell Bella he will marry her.

The next morning, a heartbroken and enraged Jacob runs off to join the fight. Fearing he will be reckless, Bella begs him to stay. To force him to promise his return, she asks him to kiss her. The kiss is passionate, and Bella is shocked to realize she is in love with Jacob, too, though it does not change her decision to be with Edward. As the battle begins in the clearing below, Victoria and her new mate, Riley, appear at the campsite. Edward, aided by the young werewolf Seth Clearwater, fights them. To create a distraction, Bella prepares to cut her arm with a sharp rock, but Edward stops her. Together, he and Seth kill both Riley and Victoria.

Immediately after the battle, the Volturi guard, led by Jane, arrive. They execute a surrendered newborn, Bree Tanner, and warn Bella that their patience regarding her human status is running out. Bella learns that Jacob was severely injured while saving Leah Clearwater from a newborn. She goes to La Push and has a final, painful conversation with Jacob. He accepts her choice and, in an act of love, decides to stop fighting for her. Devastated, Bella returns to Edward and, once her initial grief subsides, reaffirms her choice to be with him, accepting the pain of her decision. She agrees to a real wedding for her family's sake and puts on the engagement ring. The story concludes from Jacob's perspective. Some time later, he receives a wedding invitation from Edward. In agony, he phases into his wolf form and runs away, trying to escape his human pain.
