Character Analysis

Genevieve Grimm/Genevieve Silver

Genevieve Grimm is the protagonist of Enchantra. She is described as curvy, with golden-brown, curly hair and cerulean eyes. She is a Specter, a paranormal being capable of turning invisible and passing through walls. She inherited her abilities from her father Gabriel. Genevieve is the daughter of Tessie Grimm, a powerful necromancer who died in the opening chapters of Phantasma. Genevieve is also the sister of Ophelia Grimm, who inherited Tessie’s necromancy powers. At the start of Enchantra, Genevieve is traveling through Italy, uncertain as to whether she should travel to Enchantra to seek people who can help her understand herself. Genevieve struggles with guilt and insecurity resulting from her past romantic relationship with Farrow Henry, a rich young man who broke Geneveive’s heart after leading her on. Farrow credited Genevieve’s paranormal heritage for his refusal to marry her, causing Geneveive to struggle to accept her powers.

Genevieve’s journey toward understanding herself and her abilities is at the core of her character arc. Genevieve felt neglected by Tessie, who spent all her time preparing Ophelia to become a necromancer. Genevieve never received guidance to help her understand her Specter abilities, and now she worries that it’s too late: “There had been plenty of opportunities for Genevieve to tell Ophelia about her newfound desire to learn. But every time Genevieve had tried, she’d found herself unable to admit how foolish she’d been. How she’d been running from her family, from herself, for so long” (22). Genevieve acknowledges that she turned away from herself and her own family in hopes of finding a sense of normalcy, but now she feels she cannot discover more about herself. Part of Genevieve’s insecurity stems from a lack of self-understanding. She taught herself how to utilize her Specter powers during the events of Phantasma, but the Hunt in Enchantra is the first time she uses her abilities to survive, and she still doesn’t fully understand them. When she projects her powers outward to save herself from Grave’s ability to stop time, she herself is surprised by this ability and doesn’t know how she has done it. Even at the end of the novel, Genevieve still does not fully grasp the breadth of her powers, leaving her character development open for further exploration in the third Wicked Games book.

Rowington/Rowin Silver

Rowington/Rowin Silver is the male love interest of Enchantra. He is described as tall and muscular, with dark hair, amber eyes, impeccable bone structure, a lip piercing, and swirling tattoos all over his body. He is a Shadow Wraith, capable of manipulating shadows and darkness at will. Rowin has a fox familiar named Umbra who follows him and protects him. Rowin is the son of Barrington Silver and Vira, a demon. Vira suffers from the Crimson Rot, and Rowin and his siblings must compete in a Hunt organized by the devil Knox each year in exchange for her treatment. Rowin has won the past 15 games of the Hunt, giving him 15 years of freedom to search for a cure for Vira to stop the Hunt.

Rowin has complicated relationships with his siblings. His siblings view him as selfish for his winning streak, though he claims he uses his freedom to find a cure to free them all. Grave does not believe in the existence of a cure and assumes Rowin is misleading them or offering them false hope of freedom. Rowin is Remington/Remi’s identical twin, and their relationship is particularly strained. Genevieve finds a letter Rowin wrote, which says, “Remington, I don’t know how to repair this rift” (237). The rift is never fully explored in Enchantra, but Genevieve intuits that Remi is jealous of Rowin’s years of freedom, a jealousy that is especially potent given Rowin and Remi’s twin relationship.

Rowin and Geneveive’s romantic relationship lies at the heart of Enchantra. Their flirtatious tension is apparent from their first interaction. When Genevieve insults Rowin after he fails to let her in the front door, she notices, “The smile that curled onto his lips at her insult was dangerous. He leaned down, until his eyes were level with hers, their noses nearly touching. ‘Don’t want to deal with my attitude? Leave’” (44). Though Rowin tells her to leave, he says it with a smile while encroaching on her personal space. This illustrates Rowin’s draw to Geneveive, the instant attraction between them that lays the foundation for their romantic relationship to bloom. By the end of the novel, Rowin loves Genevieve so much that he cannot live without her, telling her, “I want you to know, I really would have waited for you, right here, forever if that’s what it would have taken. I would have stood in this spot until I could no longer distinguish my own soul from the shadows. Until your light came back to me” (425). Rowin and Genevieve are shadow and light; a Shadow Wraith and Specter. Genevieve prevents the shadows from swallowing Rowin, and Rowin prevents Genevieve from losing her light.

Knox

Knox is the antagonist of Enchantra. He is described as handsome with strange purple eyes. As a Devil, Knox is extremely powerful. His true name is unknown, but he is called Knox after his estate in the Third Circle of Hell, named Knoxium. Knox began the Hunt after tricking Barrington Silver into signing his children up for a yearly Hunt in exchange for a yearly fix for his wife Vira’s Crimson Rot; Barrington thought it was a one-off event. As a Devil, Knox is deceitful and selfish, tormenting the Silvers and then Genevieve for his own pleasure and benefit. As a resident of the Third Circle of Hell, Knox’s primary sin is Greed. He hoards magical objects in his trove and metes them out to the winners of the Favored title in the Hunt; he traps the entire Silver family as his servants for most of the year; and he even seeks to keep Genevieve’s soul to gain control over Salem and thus influence the King of Devils. He is greedy for objects, people, and power, and this greed is ultimately his downfall. As a static character, Knox does not go through significant change. Knox’s greed causes him to abruptly change the rules of the Hunt in an attempt to obtain Genevieve’s soul: He fails to recognize that Grave is manipulating him because he has a hubristic faith in his own intelligence.

Ellington/Ellin Silver

Ellington/Ellin Silver is a secondary character in Enchantra. She is the youngest Silver sibling and a Light Wraith who can wield light and heal others. She is described as having white hair and black eyes, and she has a snow leopard familiar named Sapphire. Ellin is the kindest of the Silver siblings, as she treats Genevieve with empathy and even hesitates to kill her during the Hunt. Ellin heals Genevieve twice from her nearly fatal injuries, but her characterization grows in nuance when she demands payment for it from Rowin. Ellin is kind, but she’s not simplistically nice; she still wants to win the Hunt and has the same competitive edge as her siblings. Besides Genevieve, Ellin is the only other female character who appears throughout Enchantra until Genevieve returns to New Orleans and to Ophelia. Her presence in the narrative offers Genevieve a sisterhood connection in the absence of Ophelia, even as Ellin attempts to remind Genevieve that she’s not a “real” Silver in the early rounds of the Hunt. Ellin trusts Rowin more than their other siblings, leading her to sacrifice herself in the fifth round of the Hunt to aid Genevieve and Rowin’s plan to obtain freedom from Knox.

Gravington/Grave Silver

Gravington/Grave Silver is the eldest Silver sibling. He is described as massively tall and muscular, and he has a mink familiar named Lilith. He is a powerful Void Wraith, capable of opening portals and freezing time at will. Grave is a character motivated by anger. He is angry that he’s trapped in the Hunt, he is angry that his mother is sick, and he is angry that Rowin continues to proclaim the existence of an uncertain cure for Crimson Rot. Grave is the most outwardly violent of the Silver siblings, relishing the carnage of the Hunt. He also shirks the rules of the Hunt, as he repeatedly attempts to kill Genevieve during the safe hours. He is not motivated to kill her by hatred, but instead what he views as a logical distrust of Knox. He assumes correctly that if Rowin and Genevieve win and thus gain permanent freedom, it will come at the expense of the rest of the Silvers. However, despite his mistrust of Rowin’s intentions, Grave allies himself with Rowin and Genevieve at the end of the novel, using his Void Wraith powers to trap Knox and allow Rowin and Genevieve to enact their plan to earn everyone’s freedom.

Sevington/Sevin Silver

Sevington/Sevin Silver is one of the middle siblings of the Silver family. He is described as handsome, with dark hair, crimson eyes, and tally mark tattoos all over his body, and he has a wolf familiar named Dante. He is a Blood Wraith, meaning that he is powerful but must consume and release blood regularly. Sevin is the most friendly and charming of the Silver siblings. Behind his charismatic exterior, however, is a deeper emotional side. Sevin feels pain and suffering at his eternal existence, and his emotional vulnerability prompts Genevieve to confide in him about her growing feelings for Rowin, which Sevin encourages. Sevin arrives with Grave and Rowin to Grimm Manor at the end of the novel, hinting at his potential ongoing role in the Wicked Games series.
