Plot Summary

Still reeling from being excluded from her polyamorous relationship with Sean Roberts and Dominic King, Cecelia Horner confronts a man she only knows as “The Frenchman”: the enigmatic leader of The Ravenhood. (This organization is her lovers’ “Robin Hood”-style vigilante group, which targets corporate criminals like her father, Roman Horner). Now, Cecelia demands answers about her estranged father and demands to see Sean and Dominic, who have abruptly and inexplicably cut her out of their lives.

The Frenchman reveals that he orchestrated her removal from The Ravenhood because her connection to Roman and his corrupt wealth makes her a liability to the vigilante group. Heartbroken, Cecelia isolates herself for months, staying alone in her father’s house in the town of Triple Falls and wallowing in a haze of grief. She attempts to move on by continuing her work at her father’s plant. (This job is part of a deal with her father, in which she commits to working for Roman for a certain length of time in order to earn a generous inheritance that is intended to make up for his absence from her life.) However, her effort to move on from her grief over her lost romance is hampered when Sean and Dominic surprise her with a brief, painful reunion. Sean silently appears at a town festival and dances with her, then disappears. Chasing him, she finds Dominic, who also rejects her pleas and leaves her completely alone, solidifying her exile from their lives and from The Ravenhood.

Nearly a year later, Cecelia tries to reenter the dating world but finds herself unable to connect with anyone. Her hope is briefly rekindled when she discovers a Ravenhood necklace on her pillow and believes it to be a sign from Sean or Dominic. She rushes outside to their old meeting spot in the woods but instead finds The Frenchman. Their confrontation escalates into a physical struggle that grows sexually charged despite their mutual hostility, and The Frenchman forcibly removes the necklace. He then reveals his true identity as Ezekiel Tobias King, Dominic’s older half-brother and the mastermind behind The Ravenhood’s mission to ruin Cecelia’s father, Roman. Cecelia also learns that her father is responsible for the deaths of Tobias and Dominic’s parents.

Following this revelation, Tobias continues to invade Cecelia’s life. He forces her into a business arrangement, demanding her silence about his plans to ruin Roman; in exchange, he agrees to guarantee Roman’s safety until Cecelia finishes her work at the plant and manages to secure her inheritance from Roman. As time goes on, her interactions with Tobias are characterized by a volatile mix of power struggles, philosophical debates, and increasing sexual tension.

Feeling manipulated and emotionally exhausted, Cecelia realizes that Tobias is correct in his accusation that she is addicted to the chaos and intensity of her life with The Ravenhood. Having been rejected by her former friends at the garage, she resolves to break her dependency on their lifestyle and company. This decision culminates in a night of aggressive, hate-fueled sex with Tobias, which she uses to break away from her past with Sean and Dominic. Although part of her regrets betraying her former lovers through this act of infidelity, Cecelia nonetheless feels a sense of liberation and adopts a colder, more cynical persona.

Following a series of tense psychological games and power struggles, her connection with Tobias deepens into a complicated affair. However, their improved dynamic of trust and mutual affection is shattered when Sean and Dominic return from a period of exile in France—a situation that Tobias forced them into. Cecelia learns that Tobias sent them away as punishment for involving her in Ravenhood business; he also intended to deliberately ruin their polyamorous relationship by seducing Cecelia. The ensuing confrontation fractures the brothers’ relationship and leaves Cecelia feeling betrayed by all three men.

The confrontation is interrupted when hired assassins invade the house in an attempt to kill Roman. In the ensuing gunfight, Dominic is fatally shot while protecting Cecelia from the gunfire. As he dies in her arms, the rest of the brotherhood, led by Sean and their friend Tyler, arrives to fight off the attackers. A devastated Tobias orders Cecelia to leave Triple Falls and never return. Tyler helps her to escape and provides her with an alibi. (Years later, Cecelia will discover that this alibi was orchestrated by Tobias and Roman; her father was complicit in the cover-up and acted to protect his own interests.)

Six years later, Cecelia has become a successful CEO of a nonprofit foundation and is engaged to a kind, stable man named Collin. However, she remains so haunted by her past that she calls off the wedding and returns to Triple Falls. Roman died years ago, and now, when Cecelia makes arrangements to sell her late father’s company, she discovers that Tobias is the buyer. After a tense and hostile reunion, Cecelia changes the parameters of the deal, demanding answers as a condition of the sale and forcing them to work together.

During her stay in Triple Falls, she has a painful encounter with Tessa, the woman Sean has since married. She also learns that Tobias is now in a relationship with a woman from their past, Alicia. After a violent confrontation between Collin and Tobias, Cecelia ends her engagement to Collin. She also shares an emotional farewell with Sean, finding a measure of peace.

Cecelia’s search for truth and clarity about her traumatic past in Triple Falls leads her to discover a letter from her mother, Diane, in which Diane confesses that she accidentally started the fire that killed Tobias’s parents. Cecelia also learns that Roman covered up the circumstances of the accident and took the blame in order to protect Diane.

Cecelia confronts her mother and then Tobias, who reveals that he has known the truth about his parents’ deaths for years. He explains to Cecelia that on the night Dominic died, he made a deal with Roman to protect her. Now, with all secrets exposed, Cecelia and Tobias face their unresolved feelings. Believing that Tobias will never overcome his guilt or commit to a relationship with her, Cecelia signs away her stake in the company and prepares to leave Triple Falls forever.

Eight months later, Cecelia is living a quiet life, running a small café in Virginia. When she sees Tyler on television and realizes that he is now a member of the President’s security detail, she understands that The Ravenhood’s influence has reached the highest levels of power. Tobias suddenly turns up at her café; he has ended his relationship with Alicia and left his old life behind. He confesses that he has loved her all along, and he explains that his fear of losing her as he lost Dominic has been the factor that has kept him away from her all these years. He asks for a chance to regain her trust. Despite their painful history, the two are unable to deny their connection, so Cecelia agrees to start a new life with Tobias.
