Chapter 2 Summary

Daniel arrives late at Six’s house and explains that he’d been hiding from Holder, who was at Sky’s house. As they prepare to leave, Daniel grabs Six and hides them against the door because Sky is standing at her bedroom window. They agree that it will be fun to hide their date from their friends. They crawl from Six’s porch to Daniel’s car. Daniel says that Six might get dirty, and she dismisses his concern. She agrees to a more casual barbecue restaurant instead of sushi. Daniel loves that Six is not afraid of getting dirty and is open to his plan.

At the restaurant, Six tells Daniel that she has four older brothers. Her full name is Seven Marie Jacobs, but in retaliation against her parents for moving her to Texas when she was 14, she began calling herself “Six.” As they talk, Daniel keeps waiting for Six to reveal her fatal flaws, but he finds none. Six laughs that Daniel has nicknamed his younger sister “Chunk” and wonders if it is bad that Daniel has not given her a nickname yet.

Daniel admits that he is having trouble finding a nickname for her because of her mysterious personality—despite her “promiscuous” past, she does not “seem like the type who needs a guy’s attention” (35). Six stiffens and insists that she is not how she used to be. This is the first date she has ever been on; guys just try to sleep with her. Daniel insists that talking to her at dinner has been amazing, and they continue flirting. Daniel realizes that he has never felt good being himself around a girl.

They stare at each other until Daniel breaks the silence by saying that he wants to kiss her. Six consents, and he leans across the table to kiss her. Not wanting their date to end, Daniel suggests that they go to the park across from his house. Six agrees, fist-bumping Daniel as she gets into the car. He feels that this is “probably the hottest thing [he’s] ever seen” (42). He asks what her dealbreaker will be, and she becomes guarded. She says that everyone has dealbreakers and that some people just try to keep them hidden.

When they arrive at the park, Daniel is pleasantly surprised that Six actually wants to play on the playground. Six has had sex with six different people. Daniel teases her about whether there were any boys in Italy. Six goes quiet, saying that there was one boy in Italy but that she does not want to talk about him: He is the reason why she has not had sex in over a year. Six tells Daniel that she hopes he did not bring her there expecting sex. Daniel tells her that he only brought her to the playground because he wanted to spend more time with her. Six smiles and asks Daniel which house is his. He points out his house across the street, pointing to his window, and Six says that she wants to see his bedroom.

They sneak into his room. Six looks around, telling him that she likes his room and that a bedroom tells a lot about a person. They kiss until Six whispers his name and asks him to bring her home. Daniel thinks that he hates every guy from Six’s past who failed to get to know the real her. Daniel asks if Six loved the boy in Italy. She leans her forehead against his shoulder, declining to answer. Daniel kisses her head and takes her home.

Daniel kisses Six again on her porch, and the kiss quickly becomes passionate and intense. Six tells Daniel that he better not turn out to be “an asshole” (51), while he makes her promise that she is done with the guy from Italy. Her eyes look sad as she says that she is, and she changes the subject, saying that their situation is scary because she has never had a boyfriend, but it feels like things are moving fast between them.

Daniel says that she can call him her boyfriend if she wants, and he wants the same thing. They agree to hide their relationship from their friends by pretending to dislike one another when they see each other at school. Daniel gives her one more kiss before she goes inside, and as soon as the door closes, he lies down on her porch to recover from the whirlwind night. She opens the door again to stare at him lying on her porch. He tells her that she is not a rebound for him even though he just broke up with someone. She tells him that she knows and that he is not a rebound for her, either.

Chapter 3 Summary

At school the next morning, Daniel parks in his usual spot, waiting for Six. He sees Sky’s and Holder’s cars—his friends arrive early to run the track before school. He thinks about Six and how strong his feelings are for her. As his thoughts spiral, Six arrives and greets Daniel. She gets into the car and admits that she has been worrying that their connection is not as real as they think it is because they do not really know each other. Daniel admits that he has been having the same anxieties, but they agree that they like what they do know of each other.

Six says that she has to go inside and register for classes, and Daniel leans in to kiss her. When he pulls back, he sees Sky and Holder approaching, and he quickly pushes Six down so that they cannot see her through the window. They agree to see each other later, and Daniel gets out of the car to greet his friends. Holder asks if Daniel still plans to attend a scheduled dinner at Sky’s house that night as a welcome-home party for Six.

Daniel turns toward the building, and Holder stops him. He says that Daniel is acting strange. Daniel lies, telling Holder that he just had sex with Val in his car and that he did not want to tell Holder because he and Sky were so relieved when he broke up with Val. Holder relaxes, telling Daniel that he does not care who he dates as long as it is not Six. Daniel says that Six is not cute to him, and Holder reprimands Daniel, telling him that he is not allowed to talk poorly about her.

At lunch, Daniel internally rejoices that the only seat available is next to Six. Val approaches their table, asking if she and Daniel can talk in the hallway. She walks away, expecting him to follow. In the hallway, Val tells Daniel that she will take him back under one condition, but Daniel tells her that he is not interested in getting back together. Val asks him if he is sure, and he promises that he is. She storms off. As Daniel turns to go back to lunch, he spots Six and motions for her to come out into the hallway. When she arrives, he grabs her and pulls her down the hallway, kissing her against the lockers.

When they return to lunch, being unable to touch Six feels like torture to Daniel. He feels almost addicted to her, and as she is laughing at something Sky says, Daniel interjects, asking her to stop laughing because the sound of her laughter is too much for him. Holder reminds Daniel that he promised to be nice to her. Six subtly teases him, slipping her hand under the table and rubbing Daniel’s knee. Daniel puts his head in his hands, exclaiming that he needs lunch to be over already, and Holder asks him if he is feeling okay. He slips his hand under the table and squeezes Six’s hand.

Lunch ends, and everyone leaves the table, leaving Six and Daniel behind. Daniel looks around and then kisses her. He walks Six to her locker and asks if he can see her before the dinner, but she tells him that she is helping to prepare. Daniel asks for her phone number, and she writes it on his hand before walking away, telling him that she will see him later.

Chapter 4 Summary

During dinner that night, Daniel sends a text message to Six asking her to pretend to go to the bathroom so that they can talk. Everyone around the table peppers Six with questions about her time in Italy, but her responses are short. Daniel is the only one who notices her reticence to discuss Italy and feels like this proves that their connection is real.

Six responds to his text that it will be too obvious if they both get up at the same time, and Daniel audibly groans, citing “girlfriend drama” when Sky’s uncle Jack asks Daniel what is wrong. Six says that she needs to go home to get the presents that she bought for everyone in Italy and asks Daniel to help her. Once outside, Six worries aloud that perhaps they only like each other because of reverse psychology: Everyone is trying to keep them apart, thus making them more attracted to each other.

Daniel grabs her hands and pulls her back into Sky’s house, announcing to the group that he and Six are in a relationship. He says that he wants to fall in love with her and that he does not care if anyone takes issue with their relationship. Six throws her arms around Daniel’s neck and kisses him. They kiss until people around the table begin clearing their throats. When they break apart, Daniel looks at Holder’s face, worried that his best friend will be mad, but Holder is smiling. Everyone acts like Daniel and Six’s relationship is established and natural.

After dinner, the teenagers gather in Sky’s bedroom, and Six shows them photos of Italy. She gives one to Daniel, joking that it is a 24-hour anniversary present, and Sky says that she has never seen Six so happy. Six whispers to Daniel that she wants to kiss him on her bed, and Daniel jumps up, scooping Six up and carrying her through Sky’s window toward Six’s bedroom. Daniel hears Sky state that Six and Daniel are strange and hears Holder state that they are “also oddly…right” (80). Hearing this approval fills Daniel with pride. He leans his head back in the window and tells Holder that he loves him.

When he turns back to Six’s bedroom, she is already inside, leaning back from the windowsill so that Daniel can climb in. Six stands near her bed, looking slightly nervous, and Daniel approaches her slowly, not wanting her to think that he is only interested in the physical aspect of her relationship.

Daniel tells her that before he begins kissing her, he wants to ask her three questions. He asks her what her birthday is, and she says October 31, which makes Daniel like her even more. He then asks what her favorite food is, which is mashed potatoes. Finally, he asks her what in her room tells the biggest secret about her. She stands still for a full minute until she lightly touches her hand to her heart, whispering, “My biggest secret is right in here” (85). This response causes a shift in the air and intensity between them, and they begin kissing. The feeling is overwhelming and intense, and Daniel thinks that the only feeling that has ever come close to this is the day he pretended to be in love with Cinderella in the closet.

They kiss with increasing intensity until Six stops him, worried that she will let things go further than she is ready for. Daniel senses that Six feels torn about wanting to be with him, and he understands that he needs to walk away for the night. Without speaking, Daniel leaves, and she gives him a silent look, thanking him for understanding.

Chapters 2-4 Analysis

The primary events of these chapters develop Daniel and Six’s fast-moving relationship. The theme of Honesty and Vulnerability in Building Connections develops in this section as Daniel and Six decide to exclusively see each other after only one date. Although their relationship is brand new, the pair share many moments of vulnerability and honesty on their first date, which builds a solid foundation for their relationship.

Six is especially vulnerable with Daniel, illustrating the growth that she has experienced since they first met in the maintenance closet. Despite her attraction to Daniel, she is clear about her boundaries: “I know my reputation precedes me and I don’t know if that’s why you brought me here […] but I’m not that girl anymore” (45). This is a departure from Six’s previous stance on sex. In the maintenance closet, she expressed worry about continuing to have sex with people without feeling love for them. A year later, she feels strongly connected to Daniel but wants to stay true to the values she has established for herself, even if it means potentially pushing Daniel away. This moment also highlights Six’s emotional maturity and self-respect—she is willing to draw a boundary even at the risk of losing someone she cares about, showing that vulnerability is about not just confession but also self-protection.

Six’s stance on remaining abstinent for now does not turn Daniel away: He wants to continue building their emotional connection, too. When they decide to become exclusive at the end of their first date, they are honest with the other about their true feelings: “This is scary, […] I’ve never had a boyfriend before. I don’t know how this works […] Are we supposed to pretend we’re not that interested for a few more dates?” (51). Rather than feigning disinterest or playing games with each other, Six and Daniel are straightforward in how they feel about each other, which enables them to begin exclusively dating. This honesty deepens their connection, showing that the foundation of their relationship is not just attraction but trust in one another’s emotional sincerity. This serves as a major shift from Daniel’s relationship with Val and Six’s past connections, as these relationships felt stagnant, insincere, and even unsafe.

The only thing in this section holding them back is that they feel unable to be honest with their friends about their relationship, which nearly makes them part ways when Six worries that the forbidden aspect of their relationship is the driving force. Both Daniel and Six express doubt about their feelings for each other because they are not being honest with those closest to them, but the moment after Six expresses that doubt, Daniel takes it upon himself to admit to their friends that they are dating without fear of judgment. This enables them to date openly, which further encourages their connection and relationship development. By choosing vulnerability with their broader social circle, Daniel affirms the legitimacy of his feelings and dispels the notion that their bond is only strong because it is secret. He proudly declares that he is with Six, which even satisfies Holder and Sky. Through this openness, Daniel has made Six feel safe and valued, which helps her heal from past relationships and from her pregnancy and adoption process, though he doesn’t yet know this.

Although Daniel and Six do not yet realize each other’s identities, The Role Serendipity Plays in Love continues to play a key role in their relationship. Daniel describes how fortuitous their relationship feels: “Whatever this is between us, neither one of us was searching for it. Neither one of us knew it even existed. Neither one of us is even remotely prepared for it, but I know we both want it” (86). The end of this quote illustrates an important aspect of the role that serendipity plays in love: Serendipity has an important hand in Six and Daniel’s relationship, but it cannot do the heavy lifting for them. They have an instant connection, but both Daniel and Six will have to work to maintain and nurture their connection as life intensifies. The phrase “we both want it” underscores that despite the randomness of their reconnection, it is their mutual choice to pursue the relationship that will ultimately determine its longevity.

These chapters feature the beginning of Daniel and Six falling for each other, developing the theme of The Meaning of Unconditional Love. Daniel begins to feel genuinely seen and accepted by Six in a way that challenges his prior experiences in relationships. Rather than having to tone himself down or hide parts of his personality, he senses that Six not only accepts but also enjoys the real version of him. This mutual acceptance allows their connection to deepen quickly and sincerely. Daniel also begins to idealize Six, struggling to find anything about her that might disappoint him—an early indication of how he places her on a pedestal. This kind of unexamined adoration can feel like unconditional love, but it is built on the absence of conflict or imperfection. These early chapters plant the seed for the emotional test ahead, where Daniel’s understanding of love will be challenged by the unexpected and difficult truth that Six eventually reveals. His journey becomes about not just loving someone who seems flawless but also choosing to love when that illusion breaks.

Six and Daniel’s love feels uncomplicated and earnest in this section because it has not yet experienced challenge or turmoil. Six even alludes to the fact that she is not perfect and that things may come out that challenge their feelings for one another: “We all have deal breakers, Daniel. Some of us just hope we can keep them hidden forever” (42). Unlike Daniel, who is still basking in the glow of infatuation, Six seems to carry a quiet weight—grief, guilt, or perhaps both. She does not pretend to be perfect, nor does she encourage Daniel’s idealization of her. Her guardedness around Italy and her insistence that she is not the person she used to be are early signs of someone who has already endured something transformative. There is a raw strength to her that suggests that she is further along in her emotional journey than Daniel is in his, if only because he has not experienced the pain that she has despite his unknowing involvement. Nonetheless, in these chapters, Daniel and Six are still getting to know one another, exploring the boundaries of vulnerability with each other and enjoying the emotions that come with new love.

In sum, Chapters 2-4 show Daniel and Six reveling in the early stages of a romance that feels both fated and deeply real. Their quick connection is rooted not just in attraction but in a mutual willingness to be seen and known—albeit imperfectly. As they transition from secrecy to openness, from flirtation to emotional risk, they begin building the kind of relationship that can withstand future revelations. These chapters highlight how early love can thrive when it’s nurtured by trust, clarity, and emotional courage—even before all truths are known. However, these chapters also hold a deep sense of foreshadowing, as Six holds firm with her boundaries, demonstrating true growth following her experience in Italy. She wants to be physically intimate with Daniel, but she also now has rules to keep herself happy and safe. Daniel honors these boundaries and doesn’t wait for her to verbalize her needs, and this intuitive understanding of her speaks to their strength as a couple.
