The recurring motif of phone calls and emails serves as the narrative engine in Finding Perfect, illustrating the central theme that proactive communication is essential for healing trauma and building emotional bonds. This motif stands in direct opposition to the story’s inciting incident: the hasty, anonymous encounter in the maintenance closet that created the secret Daniel and Six must overcome.
Quinn’s email to the couple culminates this motif. The single-word subject line, “Hi,” belies the email’s seriousness and the long, heartfelt message that follows. By sharing her story, Quinn speaks to every question Six had about her baby’s adoptive parents and his wellbeing. The email includes everything Daniel wished he could have conveyed to Six to put her mind at ease, but he lacked the insider knowledge to do so. However, because the email was a result of his persistent attempts at communication, it symbolizes his ability to provide for Six’s emotional needs.
The holidays function as an emotional and structural motif, framing the narrative’s timeline and charting the characters’ emotional journey from isolation to connection. The story unfolds between Thanksgiving and Christmas, seasons traditionally associated with family and togetherness, which initially serves to amplify Six’s profound sense of loss. Her private grief stands in stark contrast to the festive atmosphere. Early in the novella, when Daniel finds Six sad, she confesses, “I’m thinking about how much I hate the holidays” (16). For her, this time of year is a painful and recurring reminder of the child she gave up. This initial connection between the holidays and her sorrow establishes the central emotional conflict, positioning the ideal of family as something that feels inaccessible to her.
The holidays also symbolize Daniel’s emotional growth. At home for Thanksgiving break, he resists doing chores, leaving them to his mother and sisters. At Friendsgiving, he ends up causing conflict among his friends, unable to control his strong emotions after his phone call with Graham. This shows that Daniel hasn’t learned to take responsibility for his role in adult relationships, either with his family or friends.
However, the motif’s meaning evolves as the narrative progresses. The story’s climax and resolution occur during Six and Daniel’s trip to meet Matteo over Christmas break. This event redeems the holiday season, transforming it from a time of grief into one of miraculous reunion and joy. Daniel’s final realization that their meeting is “A damn Christmas miracle” (80) cements this transformation, emphasizing the theme of Redefining Family Beyond Biological Ties and showing Daniel’s newfound emotional maturity.
Matteo’s name captures the novella’s themes of redemption, selfless love, and the redefinition of family. In the emotional climax of Quinn’s email, she explains the deliberate meaning behind their choice: “We chose the name Aaron because it means ‘miraculous,’ and we chose Matteo because it’s an Italian name meaning ‘gift.’ And that is exactly what Matteo is to us. A miraculous gift” (56). This revelation is an act of compassion, as it communicates to Six and Daniel that their painful history has resulted in immeasurable joy for another family.
The name functions as a bridge between the two families, validating the past rather than erasing it and joining the two families rather than separating them. The name directly addresses—and dispels—Six’s deepest fear that her decision was selfish. It provides irrefutable validation that her choice, born of love and fear, was a selfless sacrifice that resulted in a miracle for Quinn and Graham. By naming Matteo “miraculous gift,” his adoptive parents honor the magnitude of Six’s act, confirming that selfless love can redeem trauma and create new, beautiful definitions of family built on mutual gratitude and shared affection.
