George’s Secret Key to the Universe is the first installment in the six-book George’s Secret Key series written by Stephen and Lucy Hawking. The series introduces scientific concepts through accessible storytelling and follows George Greenby and his friend Annie Bellis as they explore the universe with the help of Annie’s father, Eric, and his supercomputer, Cosmos. Each book combines adventure with educational content, using fictional narrative to teach factual information about physics, astronomy, and environmental science.
The series continues with George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt (2009), George and the Big Bang (2011), George and the Unbreakable Code (2014), George and the Blue Moon (2016), and George and the Ship of Time (2018). While each novel contains a self-contained story, recurring characters and unresolved threads—such as the rivalry with Dr. Reeper—provide continuity. The later books expand the scope of the narrative, exploring topics such as quantum physics, artificial intelligence, and humanity’s future in space.
Throughout the series, the Hawkings’ aim is to promote scientific literacy and curiosity. Each volume includes contributions from leading scientists, providing essays, images, and explanations that link the fictional events to real-world research. This hybrid structure allows young readers to engage with cutting-edge science in a format that is both entertaining and educational. The George’s Secret Key series is thus designed to encourage children to view the universe as something both comprehensible and awe-inspiring.
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Best known for his work on black holes and the theory of Hawking radiation, he sought to make cosmology accessible to non-specialists through books such as A Brief History of Time (1988) and The Universe in a Nutshell (2001). His research focused on the origins of the universe, quantum gravity, and the unification of general relativity and quantum mechanics. Despite his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at age 21, Hawking continued to teach, research, and write, communicating through a computerized speech system after losing his ability to speak.
Lucy Hawking (born 1970) is a British journalist, novelist, and educator. She studied modern languages at Oxford University and later trained in journalism, writing for publications such as The Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian. Alongside her journalism, she has written several novels and has worked extensively in science education and outreach. Lucy is the founder of the Lucy Hawking Foundation and has collaborated with organizations such as the UK Space Agency and the United Nations to develop programs that make science engaging and inclusive for young audiences. Her educational projects, including the Principia Space Diary created for British astronaut Tim Peake’s mission, emphasize creative, story-based approaches to learning about space and physics (“About Lucy Hawking.” Lucyhawking.com).
Together, Stephen and Lucy Hawking combined their strengths to create George’s Secret Key to the Universe. Stephen brought scientific accuracy and conceptual depth, while Lucy contributed narrative structure and an understanding of child-centered storytelling. Their collaboration created a distinctive hybrid genre—part adventure fiction, part popular science—where factual explanations are embedded within imaginative scenes.
