Part 3 Analysis

Over the course of Part 3, Michelle and Cliff’s burgeoning love affair illuminates the Challenges of Starting Over After Loss. Both Michelle and Cliff are confused about their feelings for each other. Michelle still believes that her ex-husband, Allen, was right that she fundamentally deserves to be alone. Cliff has shown her otherwise, but she is afraid to trust his compliments and affection because of her fraught romantic history. Cliff similarly shies away from pursuing a romance with Michelle because of his complicated past with Tracy. Both characters have been disappointed, hurt, and let down in the past. They care for each other but do not know how to begin fresh on their own terms. The narrative uses minor and secondary characters to urge the lovers together and help them past their sorrow: Paulie, Emily, Sara, George, and Carol all comment upon Michelle and Cliff’s dynamic. Paulie insists that Michelle has “caught the bug of this town” (282) and seems happier than he’s ever seen her before; Sara asserts that Michelle and Cliff are in love with each other, although neither will admit it; Carol and George relentlessly tease Cliff about how much time he spends with Michelle; and Emily remarks on Cliff’s questionable decision to go on a date with Sara. These peripheral remarks urge Michelle and Cliff to acknowledge and accept their love for each other—feelings that offer them a second chance at intimacy in the wake of their loss.

The longer Michelle spends in Copper Run the less time she has left with Cliff—a narrative device that introduces a metaphorical ticking clock to intensify stakes. As months pass, Michelle and Cliff grow closer. They share holidays and dinners, conversations and jokes, good laughs and hard cries. They are vulnerable with each other and come to understand one another. However, as December rapidly approaches, their time to acknowledge their feelings for each other is running out; moreover, their love feels futile in light of Michelle’s imminent departure. In Chapter 31, for example, the characters have one of their most intimate moments after Cliff drops his girls off at the bus stop, but the exchange also reminds them that circumstances promise to keep them apart. While sitting with Michelle afterward, Cliff experiences an internal battle over their hopeless future:

I want to say something. I always want to say something to her. But what is there to talk about now? We’ve gotten in this precarious situation with no real exit. She’s going to leave Copper Run. I’ll stay here. What is there to discuss? […] I want to kiss her again. It would be so easy… But it’s never going to be easy with us. To wish for that would be naive (353).

Cliff’s internal monologue in this scene conveys his simultaneous longing to be with Michelle and fear of acting on his feelings. He is eager to express his emotions but feels they are unwarranted given the impossibility of their future as a couple. This inner conflict creates another roadblock to the couple’s relationship.

Michelle’s family’s visit from Seattle reminds her of the life she left behind on the West Coast, and thus reiterates her ongoing Conflict Between Ambition and Rootedness. Sara and Paulie do not impress upon Michelle the importance of returning home, but they are symbols of what she sees as her “real” life. Sara is the daughter Birdie left the inn to. When she arrives in Copper Run, Michelle is forced to remember that Sara will soon be taking her place in Copper Run. In response, Michelle quashes all possibilities of a future with Cliff and even arranges a date between him and Sara. This decision—although antithetical to Michelle’s desires—reveals her reluctance to articulate her emotions: “Because saying that I have a crush on Cliff—not simply thinking it—will only put something out there that I can’t take back” (318). Michelle is familiar with her life in Seattle: the urban advertising world she spent years establishing and her newly single reality. If she were to admit that she likes Cliff and Copper Run, she would have to forsake these other aspects of her identity. Her family’s presence rekindles her fear of letting go of her old ambitions in exchange for a more settled life she never imagined for herself.
