AJ Docker/Doc

Dr. AJ Docker, M.D., or Doc as he prefers to be called, is the protagonist of Last Patient of the Night and the broader AJ Docker series. Doc practices emergency medicine in the emergency room (ER) of Ben Taub Hospital at The Texas Medical Center in Houston. Doc is an adept doctor, as his first appearance features him giving an emergency tracheotomy to a fellow skier while on the side of a Wyoming mountain.

Regardless of the situation, Doc keeps a cool head and a steady hand, which makes him suited to the fast-paced and high-stakes world of emergency medicine. It also helps him as he becomes engrossed in the mystery of Jenny’s murder, becoming a target for violence himself. When Doc manages to survive the shootout with Bohdan and his partner, Lenny remarks that he’s lucky, but Jane claims it’s because he is always prepared. Doc’s preparedness and ability to remain calm in tense moments are a cornerstone of his character, and this readiness allows him to unravel the dual mysteries central to the novel.

As he works as a doctor at a teaching hospital, he’s also responsible for guiding new doctors as they learn medicine. Doc is a kind and patient instructor. When a resident doctor feels self-conscious for failing to notice an important element of an ER case, Doc says to him, “[D]on’t stop looking until you find the answer. That’s what makes a good doctor” (123). Doc understands the importance of resilience in the medical field, as he’s worked as a doctor for years, and he treats everyone with empathy, from challenging patients to new and inexperienced medical students. Doc grew up with a mother with an alcohol dependency and no father. His lack of family in his childhood encourages him to form familial relationships with others around him as an adult, especially those whom he sees frequently, like his ER coworkers, Tom, and even Gladys and Little D.

Doc is not a dynamic character, as he does not demonstrate much growth in the novel. Instead, his character arc revolves around his solving of Jenny’s murder and his exposure of VP Lou’s insurance fraud. During the novel, he survives his run-ins with violent Ukrainian mobsters and eventually kills Dyyavola. He ends the novel extremely wealthy, thanks to helping the FBI recover the fraudulent Bitcoin funds.

Jenny Smithton/Tracy Palmer

Jenny Smithton is a 22-year-old patient who enters the ER at Ben Taub Hospital with a broken wrist and a fake name (Tracy Palmer). Doc treats her, but suspects she’s being abused. Doc tries to check on Jenny about what is going on in her life, but she doesn’t admit to being in danger. When she is later dropped off at the ER by a mysterious man with signs of severe torture, there is nothing Doc can do to save her.

Jenny’s murder is the impetus for Doc’s involvement in the investigation. Since Jenny was his patient, Doc views himself as responsible for discovering what happened to her. Doc later finds out that Jenny was on her own: “She was an only child who left Arkansas when she was eighteen. Dad left a long time ago, and mom died last year. No siblings and no other relatives we could find. She was alone in the world” (126). Doc feels for Jenny, as he also had a challenging childhood. Both were lonely in their childhoods and sought to make connections in adulthood and to protect those whom they love.

Linda tells Doc that Jenny was special, saying, “All the girls have had a bad time in life before ending up here, and most of them have given up hope. But Jenny was different. She was smart and always optimistic…She always said she would figure out a way to get all of us out of that place” (153). Jenny steals from Dyyavola because she wants to help free herself and the other women from the abuse and trafficking they endure at the hands of the Ukrainian gang. Jenny, like Doc, is a light of hope for those around her, but the light is extinguished prematurely because of Dyyavola’s violence and greed.

Dyyavola

Dyyavola is the antagonist of Last Patient of the Night. He is described by Doc as “easily six and a half feet tall and well over three hundred pounds, with no evidence of fat, his arms and neck strained his flannel shirt, and his jeans struggled to contain his massive legs. His wrists were bigger than my thighs” (195). Dyyavola’s stature makes him intimidating, as he’s capable of seriously hurting and even killing people with just his bare hands. His name is another intimidation factor, meaning “devil” in Ukrainian, as Linda describes Dyyavola by saying, “The devil could take lessons from this animal on how to be evil” (67). Dyyavola frequently abuses, tortures, and kills anyone who gets in his way. Just his name is enough to inspire fear and obedience within all the employees of the U, both male and female. He rules the Ukrainian gang with terror, not loyalty.

Dyyavola’s obsession with killing Doc stems from his need to protect his blackmailing operation. Dyyavola fears not having power over himself, as he was traumatized as a child by the rape and murder of his mother and sisters and the torture he endured at the hands of the soldiers. Dyyavola craves power more than anything else, as he tells Doc about his past, “Old life is gone. Old name is gone. No more family. No more friends. Now I am Dyyavola” (200). He shakes off whoever he was in the past, fixated entirely on obtaining money and power. Like Doc and Jenny, Dyyavola’s past is painful, but unlike them, he doesn’t seek to forge new relationships. He hoards power instead.

When Skinny Jeans discusses Dyyavola after his death, they say, “This guy never really spent his money. It sat there and kept growing in value. Even his own guys probably had no idea how much money he had. They would have killed him for it if they knew” (218). Dyyavola maintains his power until his death because he keeps everyone else in the dark about his blackmailing scheme. Dyyavola remains mysterious at the end of the novel, as his true identity is still unknown, leaving part of the novel’s central mystery unsolved.

Tom Nocal

Tom Nocal is a police officer and friend of Doc’s. Doc describes him as coming “from a family of cops, and he looked like one, even out of uniform […] he was the closest thing I had to a friend outside of the medical community” (17). Though Doc sometimes calls Tom “No Clue” as a joke, they are good friends, and Tom’s presence in the novel is important to Doc’s character arc and the overall development of the mystery. Tom is the first person that Doc talks to when deciding to investigate Jenny’s murder, as he is a police officer and someone that Doc trusts. Doc cares for many people, but his trust is more reserved. He doesn’t always immediately tell Skinny Jeans everything he finds out about Jenny’s murder, but he confides everything in Tom. Tom is reciprocal in this relationship, as he gives Banshee to Doc once Banshee retires due to his injury.

Tom pushes the limits of his role as a police officer while helping Doc with his investigation, but he ultimately stays within the bounds of the law. Doc even tells Tom after they discover the blackmail plot against Giovanni, “You can’t be part of this. You’re a cop who disobeyed a direct order way up the chain” (167). Doc risks his own freedom and safety to preserve Tom’s reputation as a police officer, demonstrating his genuine care for Tom. Tom is bound by a different moral code than Doc, who thinks he can skirt the rule of law in his investigation in a way Tom cannot. Tom wants justice for Jenny like Doc does, as his whole job revolves around upholding justice, but he is bound by stricter rules of conduct than Doc.
