They reflect on their maternal relationships and their misunderstandings as friends and cousins. The conversation turns to Iris’s current life. Iris still feels anxious about the future but feels encouraged while listening to Lotus and studying the landscape.

Iris pushes back because she doesn’t want to depend on a man—especially given their mothers’ dating history and her history with Caleb. They talk about Sarai’s future and how domestic violence affects women and children. Finally, Iris reveals the details of Caleb’s abuse. Then, August gets injured during the game. She doesn’t want his money and fears that if he pays for or buys her things, nothing will be hers. August insists that he wants to help because his heart belongs to her. Sarai enters, interrupting their conversation. August heads out before he and Iris can finish their conversation.

Part 2, Chapters 34-44 Analysis

In transitioning from Part 1 to Part 2, Ryan initiates a temporal shift, which changes the stakes of Iris and August’s friends-to-lovers romance. In Part 1, life circumstances keep Iris and August from acting on their feelings and pursuing a relationship. In Part 2, a year has passed since Iris and Caleb broke up. Iris devotes herself to healing, while August grapples with Iris’s sudden absence from his life. These 12 months without contact offer Iris and August time to independently pursue personal growth. At the same time, the prospective lovers’ time apart proves that love can withstand temporal and geographical boundaries. Despite how infrequently the two see each other, their connection remains. Their reunion in San Diego reignites their feelings for each other, reveals their abiding interest in one another, and gives them a second chance at love.

Iris and August’s second-chance romance complicates Iris’s independent Journey Toward Self-Empowerment. Prior to her reunion with August, Iris is living with MiMi in the bayou and attempting to heal from her traumatic past. MiMi teaches her, “Your soul is yours. Your heart is yours. Your body is yours” (274). When Iris emerges from this sequestered healing period in Chapter 38, she feels ready to restart her life on her own terms. At the same time, she remains hesitant to open up to others and take relational risks. With Lotus’s encouragement, she pursues and secures a new job, moves to San Diego, and makes strides to establish herself as an independent woman and a single mother. These decisions convey Iris’s commitment to empowering herself, gradually rediscovering who she is outside the context of her relationship with Caleb and relearning what it means to be her own person.

Iris’s conflicted feelings about pursuing a future with August emphasize The Impact of Violence and Abuse in Romantic Relationships. August’s sudden reappearance in her life initially disrupts Iris’s sense of resolve. She cares for August but fears that getting involved with him so soon after Caleb will disempower her all over again. August seems different from other men, but Iris is reluctant to sacrifice her personal growth for the sake of romance. Her self-empowerment and her love life still feel like they’re in conflict with each other. If she’s in love, she worries that she will give up her independence. If she is independent, she believes that she has to forsake all opportunities for romantic love. She’s been free from Caleb’s control for a year, yet the effects of his abuse continue to impact Iris psychologically and emotionally. As she tells Lotus, “It’s hard to trust again […] I missed all the signs with Caleb […] When you’re that wrong about someone, it makes you cautious” (314). Iris’s past continues to impact her present, making her feel terrified of repeating old patterns.

Iris and August’s relationship gives both characters the chance to redefine what love means to them. August is so devoted to Iris that he risks overwhelming her with his affection. His growth in this section centers on discovering the power of patience. He must learn to hold space for Iris’s traumatic past and give her time to heal before fully committing to a relationship. His willingness to set aside his desire until Iris is ready conveys his deep care for her. Meanwhile, Iris learns that letting herself love August is a sign of growth. She discovers that she can be herself when she is with August and that his love for her doesn’t mean that he wants to control her. The slow progression of their romance offers a new representation of commitment and connection in which the characters’ care for each other is founded on trust, grace, and gentleness.
