Sloan goes to her rental home to pack, but news vans arrive shortly after she gets inside. Reporters start pounding on her doors, and Nora calls. Sloan wonders how she will manage to contact Eric, but she realizes that Annabelle’s photos might hold the missing details they need. They look through the remaining box of Annabelle’s things, and inside, Nora finds the camera she gave Annabelle, with one roll of film still in it. There are over 20 photos to develop on the roll.

Ellis arrives and says they need to leave immediately via helicopter. Nora assures Sloan that they can develop the pictures at Margolis Manor.

Sloan, Ellis, Nora, Reid, and Tilly arrive at Margolis Manor, and Sloan apologizes for the media circus. Reid and Tilly discuss how chaotic the media got when Preston, Annabelle, and Charlotte initially went missing. Ellis suggests discussing what they should tell the press. Reid insists that they wait until the next day, saying he will make some calls. Sloan offers to call Livia. On the news, every station is covering Baby Charlotte’s return.

Part 5, Chapter 53 Summary: “Bend, Oregon: Thursday, August 1, 2024”

Reid, Tilly, Ellis, Nora, and Sloan watch the news coverage on the disappearance 30 years earlier. Tilly cries, and Sloan and Nora comfort her. There is a darkroom in the main house, which Nora says they can use tomorrow to develop Annabelle’s final roll of film.

Sloan calls her parents, who are still dodging reporters, and then she calls Eric. He is surprised that Sloan is in Oregon and reports that they have not found anything on Margot Gray. He realizes it is time to do something with those documents.

Marvin explains what happened between him and Sandy 30 years ago. Baker discovered someone embezzling from Margolis & Margolis before his death, which was not the result of a hit-and-run. Marvin and Eric agree that the Margolis family controlled the false autopsy report. After Preston, Annabelle, and Charlotte disappeared and Sandy was murdered, Marvin did not retrieve the files from Margolis & Margolis. Marvin figures whoever killed Baker and Sandy would kill anyone with evidence of the fraud. Marvin gives Eric the key to the safe deposit box and tells him where to access it.

Part 5, Chapter 59 Summary: “Bend, Oregon: Friday, August 2, 2024”

Nora brings Sloan to the darkroom in the basement of the main house and offers to let Sloan develop the photos herself. Sloan agrees and feels a connection to Annabelle as she handles the film. Part 5, Interlude 23 Summary: “Cedar Creek, Nevada: Tuesday, July 4, 1995. The Day Of”

Annabelle lets Ellis inside. He notices the packed bags and asks if Annabelle and Preston are going on vacation. Annabelle says they are going as far away as possible, but Ellis does not think Sandy will appreciate Annabelle leaving because of the hit-and-run case. Annabelle explains how Baker was killed, how Preston uncovered Ellis’s fraud at Margolis & Margolis, and how Sandy will likely want to arrest Ellis. Ellis does not respond, leaves the house, and drives away.

Part 5, Chapter 63 Summary: “Bend, Oregon: Friday, August 2, 2024”

Nora and Sloan wonder why Ellis was coming to Preston and Annabelle’s home that day, but they decide to develop more photos. The next few are too blurry, but then they find one that shows two people. Part 5, Interlude 25 Summary: “Cedar Creek, Nevada: Tuesday, July 4, 1995. The Day Of”

Tilly offers to pay Annabelle to leave Cedar Creek without Preston. Annabelle is shocked at the offer, insisting that Preston decided to leave town, not her. Tilly threatens to cut Preston out of the family if he leaves with Annabelle, meaning he will no longer have access to the Margolis family’s wealth and influence.

Annabelle reveals that Ellis is stealing from the company, and Tilly grabs her hair. Annabelle manages to push Tilly away, but Tilly grabs a knife and stabs Annabelle in the stomach. Annabelle collapses, and Tilly stabs her again. Charlotte, crying in her bassinet, keeps kicking Annabelle’s camera, taking pictures of the fight.

Part 5, Interlude 26 Summary: “Cedar Creek, Nevada: Tuesday, July 4, 1995. The Day Of”

Preston gets home and sees Tilly’s car. He worries that Reid is also inside. In the kitchen, Charlotte is screaming, and Preston finds Annabelle in a pool of blood. Tilly, still holding the bloody knife, claims Annabelle attacked her.

Preston tries to call an ambulance, but Tilly knocks the phone away, saying that things are better with Annabelle gone. Preston attacks Tilly, strangling her, but Ellis enters and hits Preston over the head with a baseball bat. As Preston loses consciousness, he sees Charlotte’s foot hit the camera again.

Part 5 Analysis

Part 5 moves the novel’s central mystery forward by providing the critical answer to what happened to Annabelle and Preston, as the images accidentally taken by Charlotte by accident reveal Tilly’s fight with Annabelle. Meanwhile, the past timeline section that ends Part 5 shows Ellis saving Tilly from Preston by killing him. The foreshadowing of the Margolis family’s oppressive influence in Cedar Creek comes to fruition as the culprits turn out to be important members of the family, but Tilly and Ellis act in the moment without planning. Preston and Annabelle’s deaths, then, are not tied to the Margolis family as a whole but rather specifically to the fight between Annabelle and Preston. In the present, Eric and Marvin, having just discovered the identity of the person embezzling funds, rush to Bend, Oregon, implying that Ellis is still an active threat. Donlea leaves this last element of the mystery unsolved in Part 5, implying that the full story of what happened to Baker, Preston, Annabelle, Sandy, and Charlotte will be resolved in Part 6.

The critical theme of Part 5 is The Limits of Small-Town Influence and Power, as the Margolis family hierarchy starts to crumble. At the beginning of the novel, the Margolis family is portrayed as a powerful, menacing group wielding unreasonable control over Cedar Creek. However, their influence becomes useful to Sloan at the beginning of Part 5, as Reid, Tilly, and Nora use their power to protect Sloan and themselves from the onslaught of unethical reporters. Reflecting on the media circus in 1995, Reid tells Sloan: “It was, excuse me, a goddamn mess. Accusations, conspiracy theories, rumors, and flat-out lies. We’re not going to allow that same thing to happen again” (257), showing how Reid’s influence is being used to protect the family from slander, including Sloan. Even though the Margolis family may control more of Cedar Creek than they should, this scene exhibits their love for each other and the way they use their power to subvert hostility from outside the family. It also continues to highlight the theme of The Problematic Ethics of the Profit-Driven Media as the family is forced to revisit the media’s infiltration of a painful part of their history.

However, the family’s power is diluted as family members begin to turn on each other, revealing how the Margolis family’s power can only really prevent attacks from outside the family. When Preston uncovers fraud at Margolis & Margolis, he decides to leave, and Tilly is confronted with Annabelle’s insistence that they cannot keep Preston against his will. When Tilly threatens to cut Preston and Annabelle off from the Margolis family’s wealth, Annabelle responds, “You promise? Please, Tilly, promise me that everything you just said is true. Promise me that you’ll let Preston leave this godforsaken place and never look back” (308). Even though Preston and Annabelle might struggle without the support of Preston’s family, Annabelle is pointing out the flaw in Tilly’s reasoning. Though the Margolis family is powerful enough that no one outside the family can interfere in their business, they still cannot control the members of their family to prevent cracks from forming within it. With Annabelle’s perspective, the novel highlights how the family’s need to maintain its power results in a loss of autonomy by its individual members.
