Love Arranged

Fiction | Novel | Adult | Published in 2025
The novel is set in the fictional small town of Lake Wisteria. It opens with screenshots from Eros, an anonymous dating app inspired by Greek mythology, where users match and chat without seeing each other's faces. A match notification pairs "Laurence" with "Ana," and their conversations span from August through October, revealing a connection built on witty banter and personal confessions. Ana shares her love of Lake Wisteria and her thirty-year plan to buy a cottage, have kids, and start a bee sanctuary, while Laurence hints that he is new to the town and does not plan to stay.
Lorenzo Vittori, the man behind the "Laurence" profile, reveals that he originally joined Eros to find a fake fiancée for his mayoral campaign but genuinely enjoyed his conversations with Ana, deciding he could never ask her to play the role. At a Halloween party at Last Call, a local bar, Lorenzo wears a mask and discovers that Ana is Liliana "Lily" Muñoz, a woman whose smile captivated him when they first met at church. They share a passionate kiss, but Lorenzo tells her they were "a mistake" (24) and walks away. Lily's subsequent messages on Eros go unanswered. She sends a final message saying she realized she was "a challenge rather than the endgame" and deactivates her account.
In the present-day summer, Lily discovers a condemnation notice: The local government plans to buy the properties on Lavender Lane in the Historic District, including Rose & Thorn, the flower shop her parents built and she now co-manages. The Ludlow family, which has controlled the town's mayoral office for over a century, is offering hush money and a nondisclosure agreement in exchange for silence. Lily steals her mother Rosa's matching notice, wanting to shield Rosa, who has a heart condition, from the stress. Lorenzo, who visits Rose & Thorn weekly for two bouquets honoring his late parents, quietly arranges to have Lily's broken-down car towed and repaired at his expense.
Campaign focus groups overwhelmingly favor Trevor Ludlow, the outgoing mayor's son and Lorenzo's opponent, citing Lorenzo's lack of deep ties to the town and rumors about his family's alleged mafia connections. Lorenzo's true motive for running is revenge against the Ludlows for something they cost his family, though specifics are withheld. He copes with anxiety by rolling his late father's glass dice, engraved with "Moirai," the name of a family casino, a grounding ritual tied to his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
When Lily learns from Willow, Lorenzo's publicist and campaign manager, that he joined Eros specifically to recruit a fake fiancée, she is devastated. Lorenzo tells her she was "too much for someone like me" (93), a phrase that cuts deeply because she has heard it from other men. This rejection, combined with a rebound fling with Richard Ludlow, Trevor's younger brother, led Lily months ago to swap her vibrant wardrobe for muted, neutral clothing as self-protection.
After a focus group reveals that townspeople responded positively to Lorenzo publicly caring for Lily, Willow proposes leveraging the association. Lily, motivated by her secret need to save Rose & Thorn, volunteers to be Lorenzo's fake fiancée rather than just a public friend, arguing that an engagement will be more convincing. Lorenzo resists but agrees. Lily kisses him in an alley as Last Call's fire alarm goes off, ensuring they are seen by the crowd, including her older sister Dahlia and Dahlia's billionaire boyfriend Julian Lopez.
Lorenzo wins Rosa over by speaking Spanish and demonstrating a sentimental side. Rosa reveals that Lorenzo's late father used to place the same weekly flower order Lorenzo now gives, confirming that one bouquet honors his late mother. Public outings multiply. At a cooking class, Richard taunts Lorenzo about his parents' deaths, revealing he knows the truth about the accident that killed them. Richard also whispers cruel words to Lily, telling her she is a woman men run from. Meanwhile, Lily bonds with Daisy, an abused pit bull she discovers at a vet clinic. Lorenzo adopts the dog, and Daisy becomes a fixture in their lives.
On a couples trip to Chicago with Dahlia and Julian, physical tension escalates as Lily and Lorenzo share a hotel room. Lorenzo delivers a moving answer when Dahlia asks when he fell in love with Lily, describing it as a "collection of small, impactful ones" (273). He gives Lily one of his father's Moirai dice to keep, and she reconnects with her love of colorful clothing. Before his Healing Hearts charity fundraiser, Lorenzo surprises Lily with gemstone earrings in rainbow order and a gold bracelet engraved with the letters A and L. At the fundraiser, he proposes. Lily had realized she wanted the proposal to be real, not staged; she cries but forces a smile, devastated that the moment she dreamed of is a performance.
Backstage, Lily admits she wanted more. Lorenzo insists he is incapable of love: "People like me, people like my father, we don't love. We obsess" (322-323). Lily pushes back, suggesting she wants to be obsessed over. Their tension nearly boils over, but Willow interrupts with news that Rosa's blood pressure has spiked. At a Sunday lunch, Lorenzo opens up to Lily's family about his emotionally abusive uncle and isolated upbringing. Afterward, they visit the cemetery together. Lily visits her father's grave for the first time since the funeral, recalling his motto: "Un Muñoz nunca se rinde" ("A Muñoz never quits") (353). She tells Lorenzo about the gold coins her father gave her to make wishes in the garden fountain, revealing she used her last coin to wish for Lorenzo. When he rejected her, she stopped visiting the garden and let it decay.
Lorenzo and Lily sleep together, and he acknowledges to himself that he is falling in love. He asks to be her boyfriend rather than her friend, and Lily cautiously agrees. At the mayoral debate, Lorenzo exposes the Ludlows' redevelopment scheme using architectural plans he obtained from their firm. Trevor counters effectively and attacks Lorenzo's character. Backstage, Lorenzo tells Lily he will leave Lake Wisteria if he loses. She does not understand why and tries to comfort him, but he says he cannot stay "for nothing." Lily tells him she is "not nothing" (418). She ends their personal relationship but agrees to maintain the fake engagement through election day.
Over the following weeks, Lorenzo begins therapy and processes his trauma. He sends dozens of unseen messages on Eros, using the app like a diary. After a Wisteria Weekly interview in which he opens up about his devotion to Lily, they reconcile and admit they love each other. Lily demands to know why he would leave. Lorenzo reveals that Trevor killed his parents in a drunk-driving hit-and-run, and that Mayor Ludlow covered it up. The statute of limitations has expired and his evidence was obtained illegally, making prosecution impossible. Lily offers to move away with him if he loses.
In the final stretch, Lily helps boost Lorenzo's campaign by ensuring Trevor's tone-deaf negative ad airs repeatedly on local television. A front-page Wisteria Weekly article, "A Tale of Two Locals" (504), gives Lorenzo his first lead in the polls. He secretly restores the Muñoz garden, installing a bench with a golden plaque reading "Un Muñoz nunca se rinde" and filling a bag with gold coins so Lily can resume making wishes. At the engagement party, he leads her blindfolded through the gate. She breaks down at the sight of her father's garden restored. Lorenzo tells her he is not trying to replace her father's memory but to help her stay connected to him. They commit to a "sixty-year plan" together.
On election day, Lorenzo wins. Willow addresses him as "Mayor Vittori" (518). He cries from happiness, grief, and relief, and Lily takes him to the cemetery to share the news with his parents. Trevor leaves a voicemail congratulating Lorenzo and announcing he and his wife are leaving town.
An epilogue set about two years later finds Lily and Lorenzo married and living in a custom cottage that Dahlia and Julian helped design. Lily runs her own pressed-flower art studio, the Pressed Petal. In Amsterdam for their honeymoon, Lily hands Lorenzo a sonogram, revealing she is pregnant. He sinks to his knees, overwhelmed. At the Keukenhof tulip gardens, fulfilling Lily's lifelong dream, Lorenzo takes a photo and calls it their first family photo. Lily reflects on her father's lesson about wishing and hoping, vowing to pass the tradition of the gold coins and the fountain to their children.
