Dawn Bishop, the narrator, is a 58-year-old Trinidadian woman living alone in a terraced house in Brockley, south London, working at a leasing agency after a divorce. Looking back over four decades, she recounts the secret that has shaped her entire life.
In February 1980, at sixteen, Dawn attends a Carnival fete on the north coast of Trinidad with her friend Angie de Vries. Wanting to keep up with the more experienced Angie, Dawn has sex on the beach with a white Scottish tourist who gives his name as Nick or Mick and is never found again. The Bishops are a prominent mixed-heritage family, generally classed as white in Trinidad, whose wealth comes from Bishop's Fruit Juices, a company founded by Dawn's grandfather Frankie Bishop in the 1950s and expanded during Trinidad's oil boom into bottled water, transport, and construction. For Dawn to be pregnant at sixteen is a scandal. Unable even to buy a pregnancy test without being recognized, she hides the pregnancy for months. In late May, her mother spots her swollen stomach during a car ride and confronts her. That night, her father, Kenneth, sits her down in the living room, and after hours of anguished discussion, the family decides Dawn will be sent to Venezuela to have the baby in secret and give it up. Kenneth calls it a "pact": They will never speak of it again.
In August 1980, Dawn's mother drives her south, posing as if heading to the airport, and hands her off to an unfamiliar driver. Dawn hides in the footwell for hours as the car travels the length of the southern main road. At dusk she waits in a bare shack. Around midnight, two men with covered faces force a pillowcase over her head and cross the gulf in a pirogue, a small open boat, through choppy seas. After further car changes and hours of disoriented travel, Dawn arrives at daybreak at a two-story white house in the hills, where nuns care for pregnant girls from across Latin America. She shares a room with a Peruvian girl named Salomé, tries to keep up with her A-level schoolwork, and listens in terror as other girls give birth in an upstairs room. The nuns quickly separate each newborn from its mother, and a well-dressed woman periodically arrives to take the babies away. When Dawn's turn comes in November, the pain is worse than she imagined. Afterward, she sees her daughter: purple-gray, blotched, with curved feet and loosely clenched fists. The next morning, a car waits at the gate. Dawn hesitates, only forty yards from the baby, before pulling the door shut.
Back in Trinidad, her parents' dogs do not recognize her. Dawn goes to boarding school in Kent for A-levels, then to medical school in Scotland, where she meets Robert Wilson, a fellow doctor. They marry, move to London, and have two sons: Finlay, who becomes a surgical trainee, and Oscar. For over a decade Dawn keeps the pact, but a recurring nightmare of a person with no hands haunts her. During a 1990 trip to introduce Rob to the family, her brother Ryan makes a casual but devastating remark that reveals the family has discussed her secret among themselves, breaking the spirit of the pact. When Finlay is born in 1992, Rob reads Dawn's maternity notes and discovers this is her second baby. He says nothing. During the labor, Dawn experiences vivid flashbacks to Venezuela, as if her body were simultaneously in both places.
A healthcare worker named Mrs. Mittle visits the cramped Clapham flat after the birth and, upon learning about the older child, says simply, "I'm sorry," the first person ever to express sympathy. When Finlay is a few months old, Dawn takes him to Trinidad and asks her mother about the child from Venezuela. Her mother reacts with agitation, flushing red and refusing to answer. Dawn then begins what she calls her "Era of Letters," writing by hand on thin blue airmail paper to government departments, hospitals, and churches across Venezuela. She has almost nothing to work with: no district, no hospital, no name for the child. She tells Finlay, seven, and Oscar, five, that they have a sister. Oscar immediately places a cushion on the floor between their beds for where the sister would sleep.
On a 2003 family trip, Dawn touches a mangrove root during a Caroni Swamp boat tour, and the physical sensation triggers a body memory of her original crossing, leading her to realize she passed through the Orinoco Delta. Word of her questions reaches her father, who confronts her angrily but reveals one detail: she had been on the "eastern side" of Venezuela. That evening, her brother Warren, who now runs the family businesses amid Trinidad's escalating drug violence, takes Dawn to the General Hospital mortuary and shows her mutilated corpses to make her understand why she must stop asking dangerous questions.
During a 2016 return to Trinidad after her divorce, Dawn has a final confrontation with her elderly father. He accuses her of throwing away everything that was "set up" for her. Dawn tells him that giving up the baby was "the wrong thing" and that babies belong with their mothers. "Actually, it was you I should have been fighting," she tells him. "You were the lion."
In October 2022, Dawn receives an email from Monica Sartori, a chemist in Verona, Italy, who was adopted in Venezuela in 1982 by Italian parents. Dawn has been through this process three times before, with none of them a match. She and Monica exchange warm emails over several weeks before Dawn, urged by Oscar, asks Monica to do a DNA test.
Dawn and Finlay fly to Tobago, where Warren, his wife Suzanne, Dawn's 87-year-old mother, and eventually Oscar gather at the family beach house. At 4:30 A.M., alone on the bathroom floor, Dawn reads the result: less than 1 percent probability. Not related. She weeps, composes herself, and sends Monica a voice note advising her to live fully rather than spend her life searching.
Dawn's mother, awake and watching, reveals two secrets. Before his death, Kenneth used old 1980 phone bills, with the help of their Venezuelan housekeeper Mercedes, to track down the church near the house where Dawn had stayed. Second, for years a woman in Maracaibo had written to Kenneth claiming he had fathered her son during business trips before his marriage; the boy later died in a car accident. This possible affair explains why Kenneth was so cautious about any inquiries involving Venezuela.
That same day, Warren flies Dawn across the gulf in a six-seater plane. After a rough landing, a driver takes them by jeep up into the hills. Dawn's body seems to remember the route before her mind does. She finds the church beyond a steep hairpin bend, then follows an overgrown track to a gate sealed shut by corallita vine. Beyond it lie the ruins of the house: partial walls open to the sky, a few black-and-white tiles still on the kitchen floor. She walks through the ruins touching mossy bricks and tracing walls that exist now only in memory.
The novel closes by returning to the night after the birth. Alone upstairs, unable to bear the baby's crying, Dawn walks barefoot through the house, scoops her daughter from the cot, and presses the warm body against her own. She feels the frantic heartbeat, kisses the baby's head, and whispers until the crying eases. Hermana Maria-Theresa enters carrying a bottle and says gently, "You are so young. You have your whole life ahead of you." Dawn allows the baby to be taken from her arms. She now understands this moment as her "real mistake," the bonding that made the separation unbearable, yet also a gift. "We had that time together," she affirms. "We were given that gift."
