Julian tries not to think about Dahlia leaving but doesn’t like the uncertainty in Dahlia’s voice when she talks about the new show. He finally tells Dahlia what he wants for winning the carnival game competition at the Harvest Festival: for Dahlia to tell him if she is falling in love with him too. Dahlia admits that she is falling in love with Julian as they have sex in his car, but just after they finish, a police officer knocks on the window and tells them to come out.
Dahlia panics because the police officer is not the one she recognizes as Lily’s friend, who had agreed to help them with the prank. Julian promises he will protect her whatever happens as she begins to regret admitting her feelings and starts to push Julian away.
They get out of the car to find Deputy Roberts, a man who already has a personal vendetta against Julian. He arrests them both and takes them to a holding cell for the night.
Deputy Roberts releases them after spoiling the prank Dahlia had planned. He releases them to their mothers, a fate they find worse than jail time; Rosa is furious, and Josefina tries to talk her down. Dahlia is terrified about the news of their relationship spreading, though Julian thinks it is inevitable and asks her why they can’t have a proper relationship.
Julian admits that he entered a casual relationship with her knowing that he had feelings for her, and now that they are falling in love, he is willing to give up his life in Lake Wisteria to be with her. Dahlia tries to deny that they can be together, referencing her fertility issues, but Julian tells her he won’t give up on trying to convince her that they can be together.
When they get back to Dahlia’s house, she still tries to think of reasons they can’t be together, which Julian refutes. Julian returns to the police station and bribes Roberts to delete a photo he took of him and Dahlia in the holding cell, which he intended to sell to the media.
At a company meeting in which Dahlia is in attendance, Julian talks with Ryder about restructuring the company so he can move in a month and hand off some of his responsibilities.
Julian feels confident about his decision to prove to Dahlia that they can be together, but he still feels he needs to prove to himself that he is worthy of her. He goes to his father’s woodshop, a place he hasn’t been since his father died. There, he finds an unfinished wooden jewelry box he was making for Dahlia and he uses his father’s heirloom tools to finish it.
Dahlia goes to the local bar to meet with Lily. Dahlia tells her about moving to San Francisco and how Julian intends to come. Lily tells her that he is changing his whole life for himself, not just for Dahlia.
After a heart-to-heart with her sister, Dahlia visits Rafa to ask him what Julian really thinks about having kids, but Rafa mentions that she should ask Julian instead.
Julian arrives at Rafa’s house a few minutes after Rafa lets him know Dahlia is there. Julian and Dahlia talk about their thoughts about trust, having children, and the possibility of adopting, as Julian’s parents essentially did with Rafa. Julian feels more confident about their relationship afterward and goes to work on his project for Dahlia in the woodshop.
Josefina comes to check on him, and she is surprised when Julian asks for her help on a project for the Founder’s house. They talk about Julian’s father and how proud he would have been of Julian, not just for expanding the business but because of the man he has become.
Dahlia worries about her trip to San Francisco the next day to talk through the TV show’s production. Lily suggests she should ask about staying in Lake Wisteria instead. Dahlia calls Jamie to ask what the production company would think, and though she tries not to get her hopes up, Jamie says she will see what she can do.
In San Francisco, Dahlia feels depressed, especially when she learns that they cannot film in Lake Wisteria. She asks Jamie if she can take some time to think about accepting the production company’s offer, though she feels her decision has already been made.
Julian calls, but Dahlia doesn’t want to tell him about her thoughts so as not to get her hopes up. Julian confesses that he is in love with Dahlia, and she can’t stop thinking about it all night. Jamie texts Dahlia to ask her if she is going to Oliver’s annual post-production party because she is invited, and though Jamie consoles her, Dahlia knows she now has the courage to go with Julian as her date.
Julian immediately agrees when Dahlia asks him to go to Oliver’s party. He arrives in San Francisco the next morning. When he arrives, he sees several moving boxes in Dahlia’s house. She admits that she is moving back to Lake Wisteria and has turned down the offer for the TV show, telling him that she loves him as well.
Julian repeatedly confirms that she still wants to go to the party as they drive to the Cresswell family mansion, and he can see that she is confident enough to go.
Dahlia runs into some of her friends from the production crew, and she feels bad for cutting them off after she fell into her depression. They’re excited to meet her new boyfriend, but Oliver soon appears and is shocked to see Julian. Oliver’s parents try to defuse the obvious tension between their son, Dahlia, and Julian, but the couple does their best to annoy Oliver in any way they can.
At the party, Julian overhears Oliver’s new wife talking about a house he is about to buy her, and he uses his connections to buy the house before they can. They drive back to Lake Wisteria, where Dahlia plans to live with her family until she inevitably marries Julian.
Julian is owed a favor by Callahan Kane, the heir to a media conglomerate with a streaming service. Julian calls in that favor to help get Dahlia another TV show, in which she is granted full creative control and can work in Lake Wisteria. Callahan agrees, but under the condition that Julian meets him at a private airport later that night.
Jamie calls Dahlia, telling her the Kane company wants to produce a show with her. Dahlia immediately knows Julian has something to do with it. Julian admits he did when Dahlia goes to thank him, telling her he wanted to give her the freedom to make the choices she wanted about the show.
Julian hosts Christmas Eve for the Lopez and Muñoz families, and Julian and Dahlia compete to get Nico the best Christmas present. Julian has another surprise for Dahlia’s present: He built the gazebo from Gerald Blake’s plans at the Founder’s house, which he plans to move into with her.
Julian reveals that he has actually owned the Founder’s house for years. He bought it with the intent of bulldozing it, because he knew it was Dahlia’s dream house, but could never bring himself to do so because he knew how much it would crush her.
Not wanting to break her mother’s rule about not living with a man before marriage, Dahlia often sneaks out to Julian’s house to spend the night with him. Julian suggests that they could solve that problem if they got married that day, and he gives her a ring from the jewelry box he made her.
Both of their families rush to prepare a spontaneous wedding at the Founder’s house gazebo, though Dahlia thinks they are too prepared not to have known about Julian’s plan. Dahlia knows that Julian bested her by having this impromptu wedding already prepared, but she knows it is the perfect way for the two of them to get married.
The Effects of Grief and Depression on Relationships are especially prominent in this section of the novel, as Dahlia and Julian must reckon with their pasts to have a healthy relationship with one another in the present. Not long after his father’s death, Julian realized how his grief affected his relationship with Dahlia and how he pushed her away because he felt he couldn’t handle any more. However, it takes much longer for him to realize how his grief has impacted his relationship with himself: Julian has been living a stagnant life since his father’s passing, and it takes him until nearly the end of the novel before he is willing to address the past and change, which is symbolized by his return to his father’s woodshop.
Dahlia is also hampered by her grief and depression throughout much of the novel. She is unable to immediately recognize how years of doubting herself in her relationship with Oliver makes her afraid to trust Julian. Similarly, she doesn’t recognize how their dynamic impacted her relationship with herself until she has to take a chance on love and her future, deciding to turn down her TV show deal to be with Julian. Just as grief and depression affect their choices in their relationships, Dahlia and Julian’s relationship with one another helps them recognize what is most important to them as individuals and partners, enabling them to confront and overcome their past griefs.
The theme of The Benefits of Second Chances is also prominent in the final chapters of the novel, as Dahlia and Julian’s relationship changes more than ever. Just as Julian pushes away from Dahlia after the death of his father, Dahlia really starts to do the same when he begins talking about making their relationship official. Both only push the other away in order to protect themselves, yet as Dahlia has experienced this before, she is able to recognize it quickly and doesn’t want her behavior to affect Julian. Meanwhile, Julian attempts to hold their relationship steady as he makes big changes in his own life, giving up many of his duties at his business and getting ready to move away from Lake Wisteria.
Much of their relationship is influenced by how others see them, especially their families, which highlights The Importance of Family in the novel. When Lily tells Dahlia how Julian has always looked at her in Chapter 47, Dahlia starts to see their relationship in a different light. Lily tells her to look at Julian’s decisions as his own, saying, “He decided to do those things because they made him happy, so why are you going to start doubting him and his choices now?” (397). The changes in the way Julian and Dahlia view their relationship lead to broader changes in these chapters, such as when Dahlia calls Julian her boyfriend and they both admit that they love one another, leading to a quick marriage in the Epilogue. As they navigate their changing relationship, both characters’ relationships with themselves begin to change as well. Julian finally feels confident enough to begin carpentry again, and Dahlia is able to enjoy herself at her ex-fiancé’s party while taking a chance on her new love. Overall, though things change drastically for both Dahlia and Julian, they are able to work through these changes together, leading to their happy ending.
The idea of home is important within Love Redesigned, and it is something Julian and Dahlia initially feel uncomfortable about. Dahlia struggles about leaving Lake Wisteria, though she didn’t feel particularly fond of it upon her return. She doesn’t want to force Julian to leave his home, and she doesn’t feel it would be right to do another TV show anywhere else, as she doesn’t feel at home when she returns to San Francisco. Although Julian feels at home in Lake Wisteria, he doesn’t feel like his current house is a home, merely calling it his “house” throughout the novel. This begins to change as he hosts a Muñoz-Lopez family Christmas at his house. His longing for a proper home is then fully resolved when he moves into the Founder’s house with Dahlia. In this way, the Founder’s house symbolizes a culmination of Julian and Dahlia’s story and their happily-ever-after (See: Symbols & Motifs), as they both find a home there with one another.
