Maid for Each Other

Fiction | Novel | Adult | Published in 2025
Abi Mariano, a part-time house cleaner and graduate student pursuing her MFA in fiction writing, wakes up in the king-size bed of a luxury Omaha penthouse she cleans overnight for a company called Masterkleen. She has been secretly sleeping there because her own apartment building has an infestation and she cannot afford a hotel. She plans to slip out unnoticed, but when she opens the bedroom door, she finds a well-dressed older couple in the kitchen. They introduce themselves as Charles and Elaine, greet her warmly by name, mention that "Declan" told them about her, and compliment the blueberry muffins she baked the night before. Bewildered, Abi plays along, agrees to attend something called "the Hathaway party" that evening, and sprints down twenty flights of stairs to escape.
The penthouse belongs to Declan Powell, an executive vice president (EVP) at Hathaway Holdings, the conglomerate run by Warren Hathaway, the richest man in America. At a VIP breakfast for the Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting, Declan's parents announce they finally met his girlfriend, "Abby." Declan is stunned. Months earlier, he fabricated a girlfriend to convince his colleagues and family he was settled and ready for leadership, borrowing the name from a server's name tag on a whim. Now his parents and Warren expect to meet this woman at the cocktail party that evening.
Declan tracks Abi down at Benny's Natural Grocers, the health-food store where she works as a cashier. In the alley behind the store, Abi explains she is his overnight maid, had a key, and only stayed because she had nowhere else to go. She begs him not to report her. Declan tells her she has created a crisis and leaves abruptly, saying he will be in touch. After consulting with his best friend, Roman, Declan FaceTimes Abi and proposes a deal: If she pretends to be his girlfriend at the cocktail party, he will not report her to Masterkleen. Abi counter-demands that Declan email her boss confirming he paid her to house-sit and that he let her stay in his apartment until the infestation clears. Declan reluctantly agrees and sends a styling team to prepare her for the evening.
At the cocktail party, Declan gets stuck on a phone call as they arrive, leaving Abi alone with his parents. When Elaine asks how the couple met, Abi improvises a story about Declan falling off a treadmill because he was distracted watching her. She later invents a tale about Declan surprising her with a hypoallergenic kitten and a bouquet of EpiPens and inhalers. The anecdotes infuriate Declan but charm everyone else, including Warren, who remarks that Declan's face looks better when Abi is with him.
Warren then urges Declan to have Abi attend the entire shareholder weekend. Declan asks Abi to extend the charade through Saturday and Sunday. When he offers to meet any demand, she names her price: forty thousand dollars, the total of her student loan debt. He agrees without hesitation. They draft a promissory note that Carl, Declan's doorman, notarizes.
The weekend deepens their connection. At the Saturday breakfast, Abi brings homemade muffins for Warren and meets Nana Marian, Declan's grandmother, who insists she has met Abi before. Over dinner, Abi and Declan open up genuinely: Abi reveals she abandoned a finance career she hated to pursue fiction writing and hopes to become a college professor, while Declan shares his passion for business strategy and his family's furniture company, CrashPad. At a private event at Jaques Jewelers, Declan buys Abi a chocolate-diamond necklace, telling her the stones reminded him of her freckles. They share their first real kiss in an empty hallway, then dismiss it as getting carried away with the act.
Sunday brings a shareholder 5K race. Abi has severe asthma and secretly takes her inhaler before the start, ashamed to use it openly because her mother made her feel like a burden for needing expensive medication. After the first mile, her chest tightens severely. She fakes an ankle injury, but Declan notices her labored breathing, insists she take her medicine, and carries her piggyback to the finish line. At the farewell brunch, their goodbye kiss is unmistakably real. He tells her she makes it hard to leave, and she asks him to text when he lands, dropping the pretense entirely. Back at his apartment, Abi sees the check and begins to think she will not cash it.
Over the following days, they text and call constantly. When Declan invites Abi to fly to New York, she accepts. They spend a perfect day walking through Manhattan, and Declan kisses her with no audience and no pretense. Over dinner, Abi asks what their relationship is. Declan suggests they see where things go, but Abi, terrified of falling for someone who might discard her, insists on staying friends. That night, she confides a painful childhood memory: Her mother's boyfriend Doug, the closest thing to a father figure Abi had after her dad died, chose to keep a dog that triggered Abi's severe allergic reactions rather than stay in their lives. Declan is outraged on her behalf, validating her pain in a way no one ever has.
Back in Omaha, Abi finds a printed email in Declan's office listing names and large dollar amounts tied to an entity called "RWDR." She photographs it and shares it with Lauren, her best friend, who promises to investigate. Declan invites Abi to his father's birthday in Kansas City, framing it as one last event before they publicly end the fake relationship. At the hotel, a scorpion in the bathroom dissolves the last barriers between them, and they sleep together for the first time. At the bowling-alley party, Abi fits seamlessly into Declan's family. That evening, he gives her a gold bracelet with a diamond-encrusted book-charm locket containing a quote from Pride and Prejudice: "You have bewitched me, body and soul."
Days later, the spell breaks. Roman visits Benny's and asks Abi to be his fake date at a wedding, casually saying he does not need "what you gave Declan." Abi interprets this as confirmation that Declan discussed their intimacy as part of a transaction and views her as a commodity. Humiliated, she moves out of Declan's apartment, leaving behind the uncashed check, the necklace, and the bracelet. When she returns for a notebook, Declan has read her character notes describing a figure inspired by him as "arrogant, wealthy, careless, soulless." She lets him believe the worst, reasoning the relationship is doomed, and he walks out.
A month later, Roman confesses his blunder to Declan and argues that Abi leaving the money behind proves she had real feelings. Declan sets a trap, telling Masterkleen he will be away so Abi is scheduled to clean his apartment. When she arrives, he is waiting. He tells her Roman confessed, then says, "Because I'm in love with you, Mariano." Abi resists, but Roman arrives carrying bouquets of hypoallergenic hydrangeas interspersed with inhalers and EpiPens, a real-life version of the gesture Abi invented at the cocktail party. Then Lauren appears with her own discovery: "RWDR" stands for "Rest Well Declan Roman," an anonymous online platform through which Declan and Roman have been distributing millions of dollars to people in need. Lauren herself received help when RestWell paid off her mother's mortgage. Abi realizes she was profoundly wrong about Declan.
She goes back upstairs, sends Lauren and Roman out, and tells Declan she knows about RestWell. She explains that the harsh notebook entries were always about a fictional character, not him. He lists all the unglamorous things he loves about her, and Abi finally says she loves him, too.
One year later, they are engaged and moving into Declan's New York apartment. Abi has graduated and secured a teaching position at a community college. They share the space with a hypoallergenic kitten named Little Dexxie. It is revealed that Nana Marian recognized Abi because she always bought supplements at Benny's. Declan has been promoted, and the couple is building a shared life that merges both their worlds.
