Plus Size Player

The novel centers on Nina Ford, a 30-year-old plus size fashion content creator and social media model living in Richland, Virginia. Nina inspires women who share her body type to embrace fashion confidently and maintains a carefully curated dating roster of four men, each fulfilling a different need: Russ, "The Fun One," who takes her on adventures; Tyrell, "The Smart One," who stimulates her intellectually; Dru, "The Romantic One," who is sweet and passionate; and James, "The Funny One," who keeps her laughing. Nina's loving parents, Diana and Michael Ford, model the kind of complementary marriage she admires but considers unrealistic to find with a single partner. Her best friend, Aaliyah James, teases that Russ is clearly Nina's favorite, a claim Nina deflects even as she privately acknowledges it is true.
Russ, whose full name is Russell Long, is a charismatic, attentive man who travels frequently for business. He and Nina met at a Richland Fashion Weekend party in early June and quickly developed an intense connection built on authenticity, adventure, and chemistry. He surprises her with custom-designed sneakers and a white-gold bangle engraved with the word "Fantasy." Their dates are elaborate: A helicopter tour where he pleasures her mid-flight and a dinner where Nina confronts a waitress who disparages her size while flirting with Russ. Despite her growing feelings, Nina maintains her roster and the rule she and Russ share against discussing work on dates.
Nina's professional life shifts when she attends an influencer conference in New York. Remedy Rose, the chief creative officer of RL Fashions (RLF), notices Nina's style and has her fashion scout, Lori Smith, offer Nina a brand ambassador position. The contract includes a nine-month exclusivity clause, a no-compete provision, a no-fraternization policy prohibiting romantic relationships between employees, and pay roughly equal to Nina's five existing brand deals combined. Though nervous about concentrating her income in one company, Nina accepts.
Meanwhile, Russ takes Nina to Magic World Amusement Park, a place she loved as a child, having remembered an offhand comment she made weeks earlier. They spend the day riding rollercoasters, competing at games, and sharing a tender moment on the Ferris wheel. That evening, after a condom breaks during sex, the vulnerability prompts Russ to ask Nina to be exclusive. She agrees, entering a relationship for the first time in her adult life and recognizing that none of the other men on her roster compare to him.
Her first day at RLF shatters this happiness. After fittings and meetings, Nina is brought before the company's executives, and Remedy introduces Russell Long as the president and CEO. Nina and Russ stare at each other in mutual shock; neither knew the other's professional identity because of their agreement never to discuss work.
Russ comes to Nina's apartment that evening. He lays out the stakes: If anyone learns the CEO is romantically involved with a contracted model, the perception of sexual harassment or favoritism could destroy his company and her reputation. He reveals that Remedy, his sister, is already suspicious from the way he looked at Nina during the meeting. They agree to end the relationship and pretend they do not know each other.
The breakup devastates Nina. She throws herself into work and tries dating other men, but no one sparks anything. At RLF, she and Russ maintain painful professional distance. When a photographer mistreats Nina with body-shaming microaggressions, Russ fires him on the spot. Afterward, alone in his office, he admits he cannot be near her without wanting to touch her, kisses her passionately, then abruptly tells her to leave.
A weekend celebrating her cousin Kiya's engagement forces Nina to confront her feelings. Kiya describes knowing her fiancé was the one because she felt her most free, peaceful, and authentic self with him. Nina is struck by how precisely this mirrors her experience with Russ. Back at work, she tries to speak with him, but he refuses, and she blocks his number in frustration.
The tension breaks at a rainy Wednesday photoshoot. Nina goes to a changing area to dry off, and Russ follows her. They have intense sex, unable to resist each other. He asks her to unblock his number and have dinner with him. That Thursday evening, Russ cooks for Nina at his newly completed house, presents her with three dozen flowers, and explains what he means by calling her his "escape": She is not an escape from real life but rather real life itself, and everything else is what he escapes. He promises to find a legal solution so they can be together openly and gives her a key to his house.
Nina breaks things off with James, confides in her mother about Russ, and brings him as her date to Aaliyah's 30th birthday party at Dowdy Lake. It is their first public outing as a couple, and her friends immediately see how happy she is. During fireworks, Nina nearly tells Russ she loves him but catches herself.
A complication arises when Bowen, the country's biggest plus size clothing company, agrees to partner with RLF but specifically requests Gabriella Pace, a plus size model from Los Angeles who attended an industry event Nina missed. Gabby is brought on as a sixth model, reducing Nina's workload. Remedy assures Nina that her face will still appear in in-store advertising and that she plans to nominate Nina to walk the final look in the RLF runway show at New York Fashion Week.
The week of fittings and rehearsals in New York is intense. Nina is fitted for the closing look: a white asymmetrical dress with a black sheer trench coat. She and Russ stay in the same hotel but cannot see each other privately. The runway show is a triumph; Nina walks the closing look to a standing ovation. Afterward, Russ comes to her hotel room and tells her he loves her for the first time. Nina says it back.
Back in Richland, Nina's lawyer uncle advises against signing the relationship disclosure form because it waives her right to sue the company, but she signs anyway, believing the relationship is worth the risk. Russ calls a company-wide meeting where he announces a major department store deal, publicly reveals his relationship with Nina, and explains that they met months before she was hired and that every opportunity she earned was decided by others. In a stunning third announcement, he steps down as CEO, effective immediately, with Remedy taking over as acting CEO. Nina is devastated, believing he sacrificed his company for her.
In the parking garage, she tearfully confronts him. Russ explains that as the majority stakeholder, RLF is still his company. As CEO, their relationship would always invite scrutiny, but as the new head of design, a creative role he has long wanted to return to, he can be with Nina openly without jeopardizing either of their careers. When other models question whether Nina received preferential treatment, Angelica, the head stylist, confirms she personally nominated Nina for the runway. Russ makes reservations for their first fully public date, telling Nina he was never running from work and life; he was only ever running toward her. Nina reflects that she spent years fostering men on her roster until they found their forever partners, never realizing they were also fostering her until she found hers in Russell Long.
