Tessalyn “Tessa” Ausra

As the novel’s defiant protagonist, Tessa undergoes an intense psychological journey, struggling for autonomy in a rigidly hierarchical and oppressive society. Her primary characteristic is a fierce rebelliousness that functions as her main tool for survival. Raised in the institutional confines of a Fae Estate, she has always been punished for being “too wild. Too disobedient. Too much of a hassle” (119). As a result, she has developed a deep-seated opposition to authority, as demonstrated by her frequent, unsanctioned trips off the Estate grounds. Even when Theon has claimed her as his Source, her defiance compels her to attempt several dramatic escapes: one from a third-story window at the Pantheon, and another from Theon’s suite at the Arius manor house. With these acts, she embraces Rebellion as an Act of Self-Preservation, and in moments when she is denied any physical agency, she still wields her sharp tongue as a weapon, verbally sparring with Theon to make her will known at any cost. Her resistance drives the narrative, forcing many confrontations with the brutal realities of her world.

Underneath her combative exterior, Tessa has been warped by past trauma and has great difficulty in trusting others. Her punishments as a child included being locked in a cellar, which gave rise to her persistent fear of enclosed spaces. This history influences her interactions with Theon, whose callous attempts to control her only trigger her deeply ingrained trauma responses. Her panic and violent reactions are born from a lifetime of abuse and betrayal by authority figures, and this psychological vulnerability makes her a more nuanced character, for her fight against Theon is simultaneously a fight against the echoes of her past. Her journey suggests that healing and genuine connection cannot begin until this cycle of trauma-fueled resistance and control is broken.

Tessa is also “remarkably good at moving about unseen” (7), possessing an innate ability to bypass the magical wards that monitor Fae movements. Her escape plans, although ultimately unsuccessful, showcase her ability to think quickly under pressure. She possesses a sharp mind and an indomitable will that make her a formidable opponent to the powers that seek to control her. Her internal strength also represents a chaotic, untamed power that conflicts with the controlled darkness of the Arius bloodline.

Theon St. Orcas

As the heir to the Arius Kingdom, Theon St. Orcas is a complex, tormented figure who functions as both an antagonist to Tessa and as a product of his oppressive environment. His primary motivation is a desperate need for control: a result of the brutal subjugation that he endures from his father, Valter. Theon uses entrancing, physical force, and magical coercion to force Tessa’s submission, claiming her in an age-old ritual of ownership. However, the narrative also suggests that with his crueler actions, he is perpetuating the cycle of abuse in which he himself is trapped, for he instinctively treats Tessa with the same domineering cruelty that his father inflicts upon him.

At his core, Theon is defined by the conflict between his capacity for cruelty and his moments of genuine care. Paradoxically, he inflicts immense pain upon Tessa but then helps her to recover afterward, attempting to soothe the very suffering he has caused. Although his psychological duality and contradictory behaviors add nuance to his character, his brief moments of concern for Tessay are consistently undermined by his violent assertions of dominance over her. This constant oscillation hints at the depths of his own trauma, and his inability to reconcile these two sides of himself prevents him from developing any lasting connection with Tessa. He is also driven by an intense possessiveness, reacting with fury at the thought of any other male touching Tessa. Although he frames this possessiveness as a form of devotion, stating, “I take care of what is mine” (70), his actions reduce Tessa to a prized possession that reflects his own status and power. His deep-seated need to own and control Tessa prevents him from seeing her as an individual, and in the end, he is proven to be a tragic figure. Trapped by the expectations of his lineage and the abuse of his father, he cannot achieve the connection he craves because he only knows how to possess, not to partner.

Luka Mors

Luka Mors, a Legacy of the Sargon bloodline, is Theon’s advisor, Guardian, and closest friend. As a largely static character, he functions as a foil to Theon’s harshness and contributes an aspect of pragmatic reason to the text. His loyalty to Theon is absolute, but he often challenges Theon’s cruelest impulses, particularly in the Arius heir’s mistreatment of Tessa. From the outset, Luka demonstrates a capacity for empathy, and his frequent use of the nickname “little one” for Tessa softens the brutal environment of the Arius kingdom.

As Theon’s official Guardian, Luka must protect the Arius heir at any cost. This bond, combined with his ability to shift into a dragon, makes him a formidable warrior. However, unlike Theon or Valter, Luka holds power that is tempered by a quiet wisdom, as evidenced by his warnings that Theon’s attempts to force Tessa’s submission will fail. Skeptical of Theon’s ability to cow Tessa’s spirit through brute force, Luka offers an alternative model of power based on strategic thinking and empathy. He is therefore an essential moral and tactical counterweight to Theon’s volatile nature.

Axel St. Orcas

Axel St. Orcas, Theon’s younger brother, is a key supporting character who provides comic relief and sharp emotional insights. Despite his easygoing, flirtatious demeanor, Axel serves as a moral compass within the narrative. He is often the first to recognize the human cost of Theon’s actions, observing that Tessa “won’t be the same at the end of this” (199). He also points out Theon’s growing resemblance to their abusive father. His loyalty to Theon is unwavering, but he is not afraid to challenge his brother or point out his flaws.

Axel’s interactions with Tessa are marked by a gentle, teasing warmth that implicitly critiques Theon’s intensity. He nicknames her “baby doll” and engages in playful banter, treating her as a person while Theon insists on seeing her as a possession. Axel’s empathy is most evident in his immediate concern for Tessa’s well-being. For example, when he urges her to run from Metias and Pavil, he prioritizes her safety over the rigid rules of the Legacies’ world, demonstrating a fundamental decency that his brother often lacks.

Valter St. Orcas

Valter St. Orcas, the ruling Lord of the Arius Kingdom, is the novel’s primary antagonist, and his actions reflect the corrosive nature of unrestrained power. An avatar of the systemic abuse that has enslaved Tessa and many other Fae, he delights in his sadism, cruelty, and unquenchable ambition. Valter exerts absolute control over his family, taking pleasure in perpetuating the cycle of abuse that twists and warps his sons, particularly Theon. Valter views everyone around him—including his sons and his Source, Eviana—as disposable assets to be used for his own gain. His dehumanizing suggestion that Theon could “loan [Tessa] out as a dam” (86) reveals his habitual objectification of Fae and his transactional view of relationships. Valter’s goal is to seize control of all of Devram. He is the very source of the internal conflict that torments Theon, representing the tyrannical peak of the power structure that traps both Tessa and Theon.

Dex

Dex is Tessa’s closest friend and confidant from the Celeste Estate. He functions as her protector and anchor, consistently trying to temper her impulsiveness while remaining fiercely loyal. When Theon chooses her, Dex’s immediate reaction is to plan a rescue. Later in the narrative, however, he states that Tessa is not “strong enough” to handle her current crisis, and he reminds her that he “has been cleaning up after her for nearly five years now” (452). This wording injects an element of condescension into his otherwise solicitous concern for her, but Tessa overlooks this nuance and sees him as the steadying force in her chaotic life. In his phone calls with her, he represents a tangible link to her past and a source of hope, reminding her of a world in which she was cared for without being owned. Toward the end of the novel, he is revealed to be bound to the Achaz kingdom. He tells the Achaz Lord, “I have not spent the last twenty years in this forgotten realm only to fail now. Failure is not an option” (618), and this cryptic remark, along with his admission that he was “sent” to Devram, suggests that he hides a much deeper agenda than he has let on.

Eviana

As Lord Valter’s Source, Eviana serves as a cautionary figure for Tessa, for her abject submission to the abusive Valter demonstrates the dire consequences of succumbing to the siren song of the Source bond. Eviana’s complete and unwavering obedience to Valter despite his cruelty and objectification proves that if Tessa were to do the same in her relationship with Theon, she would suffer a total erasure of identity. When Tessa first meets Eviana, she recognizes a reflection of “her entire existence from this point forward” (22). Eviana’s apparent adoration for her abuser demonstrates the bond’s capacity for psychological manipulation, making it clear that these magical chains force the enslaved Fae to view their own servitude as a form of devotion. In short, Eviana represents everything that Tessa is fighting so desperately to avoid becoming.
