Chestnut Springs

The Chestnut Springs setting is a symbol of community. The fictional ranching town is located in Alberta, Canada in the Canadian Rockies. This is where Theo Silva lives and works. He is a fixture in Chestnut Springs, particularly because of his involvement with the Eatons and the Wishing Well Ranch. He trains on the ranch and at the local gym for his bull-riding competitions and has close friendships with Harvey Eaton, Beau Eaton, Rhett Eaton, and Cade Eaton. He is also friends with Summer Hamilton, Willa Grant, Jasper Gervais, and Sloane Winthrop—other familiar faces in the town and characters from Silver’s other books (See: Background). Recurring scenes of the friends and family members gathering at Wishing Well Ranch illustrate their deep and abiding connections. They frequently share space, food, and conversation to sustain their bonds. They also meet up at Hamilton Elite or other ranching events to support one another.

Winter Hamilton moves to town at the novel’s start and gradually orients to the Chestnut Spring community, too. Her main point of connection to the townspeople is her sister Summer—who has lived here since starting her relationship with Rhett. Winter’s relationship with Summer allows her to get to know the Eatons, their families, and their friends. At first, Winter worries that she will never belong in Chestnut Springs and the residents will never accept her. Once she has Vivi, however, she discovers that the Chestnut Springs community is there to love and support her.

The Coaster

The coaster Winter and Theo write their sexual contract on at the novel’s start is a symbol of patience, promises, and love. When Winter and Theo first meet, they decide to have a one-night stand. They promise they won’t tell anyone they know about their night together and that they won’t hold each other accountable in the future. They pen this impromptu contract on a bar coaster—conveying the impulsivity, humor, and passion that inspires their first interaction. Afterward, Theo keeps the coaster. He tells Winter he did so “[b]ecause I knew I was coming back. You were a mess—respectfully—and I was out of control. We both needed time” (271). The coaster contract brings the characters together when they first meet, but also bonds them for the foreseeable future. Retaining the coaster is Theo’s way of holding onto the love he felt from the start with Winter, and trusting that this initial connection will blossom into love with time and patience.

Loretta’s Pearl Necklace

The string of pearls Loretta gives to Winter is a symbol of acceptance. Pearls archetypally represent purity and transformation, symbolism that applies to Loretta’s gift in Reckless, too. Winter initially refuses the pearls, arguing that Loretta should give them to her own daughter. Instead, Loretta assures Winter that she is family. She gives Winter the pearls because she wants her to feel seen, understood, and loved. Her loving gesture ushers Winter toward healing and renewal. When she is wearing the necklace, she and Theo have a passionate sexual encounter which marks a turning point in their relationship; after the encounter, Winter realizes how much Theo cares about her and invites him to move in with her and Vivi. The pearl necklace metaphorically leads Winter to a new phase of her life and relationship.
