Chapters 53-62Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 53 Summary: “Police Investigation—5 A.M.”

As soon as the storm ends, the police head to London Woods Lake to continue their search for Romi and Julio. The search teams find burned remnants of a boat washed up on shore. They call in a recovery team, certain the teenagers have drowned. Meanwhile, the investigators looking into the Devildogs’ Cadillac find Ben’s miniature video camera in the trunk.

Chapter 54 Summary: “Ben and Destiny—5 A.M.”

Searching alongside the police search teams, Destiny and Ben happen upon one of Romi’s shoes. Having found a clue, they head to the police tent set up for the search. Along the way, Destiny worries that Romi and Julio are dead and that her faith in the universe is wrong. Ben assures her that he believes in her spirituality.

Chapter 55 Summary: “The Parents—6 A.M.”

The Cappelles and Montagues arrive at the police tent. The police have already reviewed the footage from Ben’s miniature video camera—although it suggests that Romi and Julio were alive when they were placed in the Cadillac’s trunk, the police still don’t know where they are now. The police captain tells the worried parents about the burned fragments of a boat, but they refuse to give up hope. The two fathers head out to search the shoreline; the mothers volunteer to direct the search teams, as many neighbors and friends have gathered to help look.

Chapter 56 Summary: “Morning News Flash—7 A.M.”

The morning news leads with the story of Romi and Julio’s disappearance, encouraging everyone to help search for the teenagers.

Chapter 57 Summary: “Television Interviews”

The local news team arrives at the police tent. Newscaster Nannette Norris begins asking people questions and recklessly speculates that Romi and Julio are gang members hiding from the police. She even suggests that when the police find the teenagers’ bodies, they’ll be “pretty gruesome” after having been submerged (289).

Chapter 58 Summary: “The Fathers—Noon”

As Romi’s and Julio’s fathers carefully walk the edges of the lake, they talk about their children’s relationship and how they themselves are likely in the wrong for their racist misperceptions. The two shake hands. It is then when Romi’s father spots a blue shirt on the ground in a tangle of pine branches. Stunned, the two fathers unearth their children huddled together, alive but unconscious. They quickly carry the teenagers back to the police tent.

Chapter 59 Summary: “News Update”

When Nannette Norris sees the two fathers carrying their children, she goes live to announce that the teenagers have been found dead. Her cameraman motions to her that the teenagers are not dead. Romi and Julio are taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Chapter 60 Summary: “At the Hospital—8 P.M.”

When Julio wakes up, he only vaguely remembers what happened. He remembers Romi and demands to know if she is alright. His mother calms him down and assures him that he saved Romi’s life, that their body heat saved them from dying of hypothermia. When Julio’s father comes in, he is relieved to see his son alert. He apologizes for misjudging Romi and her parents.

Romi, now awake, tries to apologize to her parents for not revealing the Devildogs’ threats. Destiny and Ben come in together, the two having formed a special bond. Romi shares that Julio saved her life and that she is in love with him. She then convinces Destiny that the Scientific Soul Mate System kit worked—as Ben is Destiny’s soul mate (he has freckles, he recently dyed his hair orange, and the Devildogs’ kidnapping took place near “London,” specifically London Woods Park and London Woods Lake, as per Destiny’s prediction in Chapter 34). Julio comes in and officially meets Romi’s father, who hugs and thanks Julio for saving his daughter. He assures Julio that given his heroic handling of Ben’s miniature video camera, the news station will offer him a summer internship.

Chapter 61 Summary: “The Six O’Clock Evening News”

On air that night, the Cappelles and Montagues thank the community for their help; the Devildogs responsible for Romi and Julio’s endangerment face felony charges. Romi’s father jokes about Romi and Julio’s Romeo and Juliet parallels, thankful that their story turned out happier. As everyone departs the station, Nanette Norris comes out carrying a box with her office belongings. A family connection has given her a shot at hosting a talk show in Indianapolis, and Romi’s father is delighted to be rid of his co-anchor.

Chapter 62 Summary: “Phone Call—Soul Mates”

A month later, Romi and Julio chat on the phone. The two affirm their love for each other and wonder how they survived such a close brush with death. They anticipate a long summer together as soul mates.

Chapters 53-62 Analysis

As the novel comes to a close, Romi’s father reflects on Romi and Julio’s kidnapping and rescue: “I am sure glad this story of the Montagues and the Cappelles did not end as Shakespeare’s did” (316). In this observation, he affirms the power of love and the value of a happy ending. As Romi’s and Julio’s fathers search for evidence of their children’s survival, they voice the necessity of hope in times of despair. At the time, the fathers know the teenagers likely drowned, but due to the novel’s use of dramatic irony, readers already know Romi and Julio escaped their boat and made it back to shore. As such, Julio’s father’s affirmation of hope reinforces the novel’s framing of hope and love as being able to overcome despair and hate.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet depicts the tragedy of young love, teaching difficult lessons about friends betraying each other, parents being unable or unwilling to accept their children’s choices, and the disastrous consequences of teenagers trying to solve their own problems. In contrast, Romiette and Julio features empowered teenagers managing to fight evil and fight for the beginning of their love story, rather than seeing to its end. In other words, the closing chapters present an alternate story to the original Shakespeare play. The novel depicts what would happen if Romeo and Juliet were successful in their plan, if their parents came around to the idea of their love, and if their community rallied around their love. While Romi, Julio, Destiny, and Ben act recklessly in not telling any authority figures about the Devildogs, their courage and friendship are what bring about their happy ending; furthermore, the characters are young, which plays into their decisions, and the story itself allows room for conveniences such as the four teenagers’ lack of communication and the idea of soul mates to explore certain themes in a timely manner.

Speaking of themes, the closing chapters fully realizes the novel’s themes by affirming The Magic of Young Love and The Importance of Friendship, while refuting The Toxic Logic of Racism and exposing The Reality of Gangs in High School. With the help of Julio’s recording, the Devildogs responsible for Romi and Julio’s endangerment face felony charges, thus at least temporarily hampering the gang. Furthermore, Romi and Julio’s kidnapping alerts Cincinnati about gangs in general. When newscaster Nannette Norris leaves the station for a new position, Romi’s father celebrates the loss of her fluff pieces. Her departure signals the local station’s ability to dedicate itself to real news and to investigating problems like gangs in Cincinnati’s public school system. As for matters of friendship-turned-love, Destiny finds her desired soul mate in the eccentric Ben, and Romi and Julio recover and begin their first spring together—both couples having grown closer through their respective hardships. Both couples weathered the elements and find themselves blessed by nature, with the breaking of the dangerous storm from Romi’s nightmares and the promise of long summer days together. With the Devildogs’ leaders in jail, the four teenagers and Cincinnati as a whole are able to move forward with optimism.
