Nisha J. Tuli’s Rule of the Aurora King (2023) is the second installment in the Artefacts of Ouranos romantasy series. The novel follows Lor, the long-lost heir to the ruined Queendom of Heart, who finds herself a prisoner of the volatile Aurora Prince, Nadir, after escaping the clutches of a manipulative Sun King. To save her family and unlock her suppressed magic, Lor must forge a dangerous alliance with Nadir to find a powerful magical artifact, forcing her to navigate a treacherous political landscape and an even more perilous emotional one. The novel explores themes including Reclaiming a Tainted Legacy, The Corrupting Nature of Absolute Power, and The Fragility of Trust in a World of Deception.
The Artefacts of Ouranos series began with Trial of the Sun Queen, which Canadian author Nisha J. Tuli initially self-published. The book gained viral popularity on the social media platform TikTok, leading to a major traditional publishing deal. Rule of the Aurora King, a USA Today and international bestseller, continues the story and exemplifies the tropes of the popular romantasy subgenre, blending high-stakes fantasy with an enemies-to-lovers romance. Tuli is the author of several other romance and fantasy series, including Nightfire and Cursed Captors.

Five weeks after being broken out of the golden court of Aphelion, Lor is a captive in a manor in The Aurora, held by the Aurora Prince, Nadir, and his sister, Princess Amya. Lor refuses to answer Nadir’s questions about her past or what the powerful Sun Mirror—one of the magical, sentient Artefacts that control the magic of each realm—told her, demanding instead that Nadir and Amya free her sister and brother, Willow and Tristan, from the prison Nostraza. After a tense standoff where Lor throws a vase at Nadir, Amya interrupts, revealing that she has sent a messenger to the prison. Lor provokes Nadir further by smashing a crystal dish, leading him to magically bind her wrists to his bedpost for the night.
Lor endures a night on the floor and a morning of taunts from Nadir, who insists on calling her “Inmate.” After being untied to use the bathroom, Lor tries and fails to access her own magic, which has been locked away since she was a child. Amya and Mael, a High Fae captain and Nadir’s close friend, arrive, but Amya has no news from Nostraza. Nadir allows Lor to return to her own room but threatens her with worse punishment if she “misbehaves” again.
The narrative shifts to Nadir’s perspective, revealing his intense attraction to Lor’s defiant nature. He discusses his suspicions about her with Amya and Mael. Amya has lied to their father, King Rion, about Nadir’s whereabouts. They learn that King Rion is rounding up women in the old Heart settlements, which confuses them, as they believe Lor is the lost heir, or Primary, of the Heart realm. Nadir confides in them that his own magic feels powerfully drawn to Lor, suggesting that she possesses immense, hidden power.
The narrative moves 286 years back in time to introduce Serce, the Heart Princess. At a royal summit meant to form an alliance against The Aurora, Serce is arranged to be bonded to Atlas, the younger Sun Prince of Aphelion. Ambitious and proud, Serce is insulted when she learns she must compete in the Sun Queen Trials to win his hand. She storms out of the meeting and collides with Wolf, the Woodlands King, feeling an immediate and profound magical connection.
Back in the present, Amya persuades Lor to join them for dinner, promising that Nadir will not question her about Aphelion. The tense meal escalates when Nadir uses a loophole in his promise and asks Lor about her time in Nostraza. Enraged, Lor details the horrific physical and sexual abuse she and her siblings endured from the prison guards and the warden, confronting Nadir for his family’s complicity before storming from the room.
Traumatized by the memories, Lor escapes to find Tristan and Willow herself. She is attacked by a monster called an ozziller, but Nadir, Amya, and Nadir’s two ice hounds intervene and destroy it. Back in captivity, Lor gives Nadir an ultimatum: Bring her siblings to her, or she will never reveal her secrets.
A few nights later, Amya leads Lor to an emotional reunion with Tristan and Willow, who have been freed from Nostraza by Nadir’s friend, Hylene. Nadir confirms that their sentences are cleared forever. During the reunion, Nadir and Amya realize that Tristan and Willow are Lor’s siblings, meaning they now hold three potential heirs of Heart. Nadir agrees to give Lor the night with her family before demanding answers. That night, Lor has a vivid, erotic dream about Nadir. The next day, she and her siblings discuss their heritage. Tristan argues that the time for hiding is over and that they must claim their legacy. Lor reveals that the Sun Mirror instructed her to find the Heart Crown.
The narrative returns to 286 years ago. Serce and Wolf are deeply involved in an affair. At a formal dinner, Serce publicly confronts her mother, Queen Daedra, refusing the bond with Atlas and announcing she is leaving for The Woodlands with Wolf.
In the present, Lor reveals the truth to Nadir and his circle: She and her siblings are the grandchildren of Serce. Nadir explains that the magic of Heart vanished after Serce’s actions nearly destroyed the world. Tristan and Willow reveal their Fae forms, explaining their ability to “fold” into a human appearance, which hides their magic. Lor confesses that she is stuck in her human form. Nadir then reveals his own hatred for his father and proposes an alliance: He will help Lor find the Crown if she helps him depose the king. He asks her to accompany him to the Keep for the Frostfire festival, posing as his companion, to search for the Crown. Lor agrees.
Lor and Nadir travel to the Aurora Keep. Lor learns that low fae are enslaved in The Aurora, a practice Nadir opposes. At the first Frostfire party, King Rion appears but ignores Lor completely. While Nadir is away speaking with his father, another Fae, Tharos, flirts with Lor. When Nadir returns and finds Tharos touching Lor, he violently attacks him, breaking his wrist. To maintain their cover, Nadir forces Lor onto his lap, where the charged physical contact escalates until Lor, overwhelmed, flees the party.
In the past timeline, Serce and Wolf are in The Woodlands, forming their own alliance with King Rion to help Serce secure the Heart Crown from her mother.
Back at the Keep, Lor and Nadir’s relationship deepens. After Lor gets sick from drinking too much, Nadir cares for her, vowing to make his father pay for his crimes. He attempts to help her unlock her magic, an intensely intimate experience during which they discover they shared the same erotic dream. The search for the Crown in the castle catacombs triggers Lor’s trauma, and she finally tells Nadir about the years of torture she endured from King Rion. In return, Nadir shows her his mother, Meora, who is in a catatonic state. He explains that Rion’s cruelty broke her spirit. He also reveals that he is secretly working to block his father’s bill to allow the enslavement of low fae children in the mines.
Hoping for a clue, Lor consults the Aurora Torch, another powerful Artefact. The Torch speaks to her telepathically, confirming that the Crown is not in the Keep and warning that her connection with Nadir will lead to “heartbreak” and “ruin.” At the final Frostfire party, an apparent flirtation between Lor and another Fae, Vale, leads to another violent outburst from Nadir and cruel accusations toward Lor. Heartbroken, Lor ends things between them. Moments later, Nadir realizes his father knows her true identity, and they escape the Keep just as the king’s guards arrive.
In the past timeline, the High Priestess Cloris Payne confirms that Serce is pregnant. To keep their plans secret, Serce and Wolf imprison Cloris.
In the present, Nadir flies Lor back to the manor, where they find everyone safe. He reveals his new plan: He believes the Crown is in the ruins of Heart, where Mael found a single red rose blooming a few months ago. After an emotional goodbye, Lor agrees to go with him. They arrive at the desolate, ruined queendom, where red roses are now blooming everywhere, a sign that the land is responding to Lor’s presence.
In the ruins of the Heart Castle, Lor feels the Crown’s magical presence, which leads them to a hidden chamber. The Crown is protected by a barrier that only Heart magic can penetrate. Nadir helps Lor focus her rage, allowing her to momentarily break her internal block and unleash a blast of red lightning that shatters the barrier. Nadir catches the Crown as it falls. Overcome, Lor kisses him passionately. As they are about to have sex, Nadir’s possessiveness frightens Lor, and she abruptly pushes him away, declaring it a mistake. The next morning, they are ambushed by King Rion. Nadir is quickly overpowered, but just as the king is about to capture them, Lor’s magic erupts in an uncontrolled blast, trapping Rion and his men and allowing her and Nadir to escape with the Crown.
A final flashback reveals the cataclysm. With Rion’s army at the gates, Serce gives birth to a daughter and sends her away to safety. She takes the Crown from her mother and performs a bonding ritual with Wolf and the Woodlands Staff. The ritual goes horribly wrong, and the uncontrolled magic explodes, destroying the Queendom of Heart.
