Tory Vega

One of the dual protagonists, Roxanya “Tory” Vega is defined by her fierce resilience and confrontational nature. Raised in instability in the mortal world, she approaches Zodiac Academy with a survivor’s mentality, viewing every challenge as a fight. Her initial impulse is to escape the academy with her sister, but once the Heirs escalate their attacks, Tory retaliates with calculated vengeance.

Her defining act of rebellion, setting fire to Darius Acrux’s room, marks a turning point in her arc and develops the theme of The Cycle of Cruelty and the Morality of Revenge. Although the act is impulsive, it is also a deliberate rejection of Darius’s attempt to dominate her. She sees her revenge as a form of karmic justice, declaring, “Everyone knows, karma’s a bitch. And today her name was Tory Vega” (50). For Tory, revenge is justice, and she refuses to cede her power to others.

Tory’s connection to fire reflects her temperament. Her initial lack of control over her magic mirrors her raw, untamed nature, which she gradually learns to harness as a weapon. Her traumatic near-drowning at the hands of the Heirs becomes a defining moment of vulnerability, an assault on both her body and her will to survive. Rather than give in, she draws on her past hardships to find the strength to fight back.

Her fierce protectiveness of Darcy motivates most of her actions. However, her antagonistic and complex dynamic with Darius drives much of the central conflict. While she views him as a monstrous tormentor, their shared moments of power and unwilling connection hint at a deeper, more complicated bond.

Darcy Vega

As a dynamic, round protagonist, Darcy’s journey explores Forging Identity in a Hostile World. Darcy’s strength emerges more quietly than Tory’s, but it is no less deliberate. She begins the novel with introspection and caution, but Zodiac Academy’s hostility forces her to choose resistance.

The violent cutting of Darcy’s hair becomes a defining moment for her character. Seth’s actions are meant to humiliate Darcy and reduce her to something he can control. Instead, they strengthen her resolve and sense of self. Her quest to regrow it, aided by a potion, becomes a metaphor for her larger journey of reclaiming her power and identity. The violation thus becomes a catalyst for transformation. She tells Seth, “You didn’t break me, you forged me” (111).

Darcy’s decision to remain at the Academy follows Orion’s challenge that leaving would mean denying her Fae identity. This moment shifts her orientation from reactive to strategic. While Tory often responds with immediate, fiery retribution, Darcy’s revenge is more covert and psychological, as seen in her meticulous plan to infest Seth with Werewolf fleas.

Darcy’s affinity for Air magic reflects her intellectual and subtle approach to conflict. Her bond with Tory grounds her emotionally, while her relationship with Orion pushes her towards independence. As a mentor, Orion consistently pushes her to embrace her strength and heritage, providing cryptic guidance that forces Darcy to find her own answers.

Darius Acrux

Darius Acrux is an antagonist and an illustration of The Corrupting Influence of Inherited Power. As the most powerful of the Heirs, he enforces dominance through intimidation, believing strength must be publicly displayed. His cruelty toward the Vega twins is not random; it is political. He views the twins as threats to his family’s power.

Darius is trapped in a cycle of abuse perpetuated by his father, Lionel, who has taught him that power must be maintained through ruthlessness. This upbringing has made him into someone who is feared and respected. However, he also worries about what he is becoming. Darius’s internal struggle is his defining characteristic. He is acutely aware of the immorality of his actions and resents the path he is on. He expresses this self-loathing when he confronts Caleb, demanding, “Do you think I want to be terrorising people and preying on their worst fears? You think I don’t realise what that makes me? Who that makes me?” (26). This reveals a deep resentment toward his inherited role. Darius longs to be more than just his father’s son and tool.

As a Dragon Shifter, Darius’s fire reflects power and volatility. The destruction of his room triggers a complete loss of control, exposing the vulnerability beneath his facade of dominance. His relationship with his abusive father drives his motivations, his brotherhood with the Heirs provides his support system, and his secret Guardian Bond with Orion hints at divided allegiances. His antagonistic dynamic with Tory is the central conflict, a volatile clash of power between two people unwilling to yield.

Seth Capella

Seth Capella is an antagonist, characterized by his arrogance, casual cruelty, and pack-oriented mentality. As the Alpha of his Werewolf pack, his actions are driven by a primal need for dominance and a strict adherence to social hierarchy. He targets Darcy with a particularly personal and violating form of cruelty. The act of cutting her hair and keeping a braid as a trophy is a symbolic assertion of power, an attempt to strip her of her identity and possess a part of her.

Seth initially appears as a flat, sadistic bully, but his interactions with Darcy reveal a more complex, instinct-driven psychology. He is genuinely perplexed when she defies his attempts to break her spirit. Seth’s development hinges on his inability to comprehend Darcy’s resilience and his own conflicting instincts towards her. After she confronts him, he becomes obsessed with the idea that he has inadvertently initiated her into his pack, a bond that compels him to both dominate and protect her. He explains his confusion, stating, “I have to protect the weakest in the pack until they find their place […] That’s why I healed you today” (375). Darcy’s revenge leads to his ultimate humiliation, an infestation of Werewolf fleas that causes his own pack to abandon him. This karmic justice strikes at the core of his identity, isolating him from the group that defines him.

Caleb Altair

Caleb Altair is an antagonist and a foil to the other Celestial Heirs. While he participates in their campaign of cruelty against the Vega twins, an internal conflict sets him apart. As a Vampire, he is bound by a specific code that forbids him from torturing Tory, who is his designated “Source.” This rule forces him into the role of a reluctant observer during the Heirs’ worst actions, which causes him significant guilt. His internal monologue after Tory’s near-drowning reveals his discomfort: “[E]ven though I could claim to have been nothing more than a witness I still felt…kinda shitty” (18). This capacity for remorse distinguishes him from the more ruthless members of his group.

Caleb favors seduction and manipulation over overt violence. He attempts to use his charisma to get Tory away from dangerous situations, though his motives are a complex mix of protective instinct, genuine attraction, and a desire to feed on her power. This makes him a morally ambiguous and round character. His relationship with Tory is a tense dance of attraction and distrust. While deeply loyal to the brotherhood of the Heirs, Caleb is often the dissenting voice, questioning their methods and challenging their cruelty.

Max Rigel

Max Rigel appears as a cruel and arrogant antagonist, but his character is revealed to be a carefully constructed facade. As a Siren, he feeds on the emotions of others, and he projects an image of enjoying fear and misery. His participation in the near-drowning of Tory is one of the most brutal acts committed by the group. However, the “Siren song” encounter with Tory unveils the truth of his character. During this magical event, Tory discovers his deepest secrets: He was born out of wedlock, and his stepmother murdered his biological mother. This backstory reframes Max’s actions as a performance of strength designed to protect his vulnerable position and hide a past filled with trauma.

Tory learns that he does not enjoy feeding on fear; rather, he prefers positive emotions but avoids them because he hates the sadness it leaves in others when he takes too much. This revelation transforms him from a flat sadist into a round, tragic figure. His Siren song, which he explains “picks someone who the magic thinks needs to feel [his] power” (150), is part predatory, but also leaves Max vulnerable. The secret he is forced to share with Tory creates a complex bond between them.

Lance Orion

Lance Orion is a mysterious character who both mentors the twins and supports the Heirs, specifically Darius. Initially appearing as another harsh and intimidating professor, he quickly reveals a deeper, more complicated agenda. Orion’s primary function is to challenge Darcy and Tory to embrace their Fae heritage and fight for their place at Zodiac Academy. His defining challenge to Darcy, “If the Heirs have beaten you, then you’re not one of us. And you never were” (62), forces her to decide who she wants to be. Orion pushes rather than comforts.

Orion operates from the shadows, providing cryptic guidance to Darcy through anonymous messages and physically intervening at critical moments. His actions are duplicitous. He is publicly aligned with the faculty and holds a secret Guardian Bond that ties him to Darius, yet he subversively aids the Vega twins. He is a vampire that actively feeds off of Darcy, but he also tutors Darcy to help her catch up to the rest of the Fae. Orion is a complex player in the story’s central power struggle. His gruff, sarcastic demeanor masks a protective instinct and a tragic past involving his missing sister, Clara. His relationship with Darcy is a mentor-mentee dynamic complicated by a forbidden undercurrent of mutual attraction that both characters struggle against.

Supporting Characters

Geraldine Grus is a key ally to the Vega twins, representing the “Royalist” faction of students who believe the twins are the rightful heirs. Despite her eccentric personality, she is fiercely loyal and surprisingly powerful as a Cerberus, offering the twins physical protection and friendship.

Sofia Cygnus and Diego Polaris are the twins’ first true friends, representing the less powerful Fae who often suffer under the Heirs’ oppressive social order. Their steadfast loyalty offers Darcy and Tory a vital emotional support system.

Lionel Acrux remains a background threat. His belief that dominance must be enforced through fear shapes both Darius and the academy’s culture. He represents the corrupting influence of inherited power.
