Chapter 16 Summary: “Darcy”

Darcy dreams of being pulled toward swirling shadows by a female voice calling for help. A memory of someone with endless eyes pulls her back from the void. She wakes and opens her window to dispel the lingering darkness. After checking her horoscope, which cryptically warns of challenges and surprises, she heads to The Orb for breakfast.

At their usual table, Darcy finds Tory wearing an expensive new scarf. Tory admits she slept poorly and had a confrontation with Darius. Geraldine arrives disheveled after a morning altercation with Max, who used water magic to flip her skirt during a fight over bagels. When Max walks past with jam in his hair and bananas protruding from his pants, Darcy realizes Geraldine exacted revenge.

Diego hesitantly approaches their table. When Seth deliberately dumps food on Diego, Darcy helps clean him up and invites him to join them. Despite Tory’s initial reluctance, Diego stammers an apology and is accepted back into their group.

In their first Numerology class, Professor Faun teaches them to calculate birth path numbers. Both twins receive a one, which Faun identifies as the number of leaders and rulers who have governed Solaria. When another student makes a disparaging comment, Darcy feels her first genuine desire to claim the throne.

After school, Darcy goes to Pitball Stadium for tryouts but finds herself locked out by Seth. She flies over the stadium roof, crashing onto the pitch before the assembled team. After changing into her uniform, she joins grueling tryout drills. When attempting to defend the Pit as a Keeper, she successfully blocks a powerful shot from Seth. Orion, clearly impressed, tells her she made the team before disappearing at Vampire speed to fetch Tory for her mandatory cheer practice.

Chapter 17 Summary: “Tory”

While trying to rest and escape thoughts of Darius, Tory is violently interrupted when Orion blasts her bedroom door off its hinges. He announces she is late for cheer practice and, when she refuses, traps her in ice before throwing her over his shoulder. Using Vampire speed and air magic, he carries a screaming Tory out her window and deposits her in the Pitball Stadium locker room, threatening detention if she does not comply.

Tory finds a cheer uniform with her name spelled out in sequins. Overhearing squad members Marguerite Helebor and Kylie Major complaining about her forced inclusion, she dresses in the revealing outfit but customizes it to be bolder. Before leaving, she uses the provided face paint to write a profane message across her bottom.

On the pitch, Caleb whistles at her appearance, and she responds with an obscene gesture. When Kylie doubts her gymnastics ability, Tory impresses the team with different cheer moves and explains she took gymnastics classes at her mortal high school. Marguerite, the cheer captain, tries to get Tory kicked off the team by Orion but fails. Practice ends, and Caleb invites Tory on a date.

That evening, Caleb takes Tory to an upscale karaoke sushi restaurant. She reminds Caleb that she is a vegetarian. The live singing and food are poor. The date ends in failure as they leave early, unable to agree on alternative activities. Caleb asks for a breakfast do-over, but Tory refuses and only vaguely suggests they might have sex later.

Chapter 18 Summary: “Darcy”

Late at night, Darcy sneaks to Orion’s quarters and taps on his window. He pulls her inside with Vampire speed, clearly anxious about the risk. They begin to kiss but are interrupted when Professor Washer speaks through the mail slot, asking to be let in and mentioning Fran, a former lover of Orion’s. The interruption kills the mood. After Washer leaves, Orion pours them wine.

Darcy admits the voice from her dreams continues to tempt her toward the shadows. Orion warns her never to follow it and theorizes that she and Tory formed a connection with the voice in the void on the night of the Lunar Eclipse. He reveals he owns illegal books on dark magic but cannot find enough information about their situation.

When Darcy asks about his history with dark magic, Orion explains that his father taught him as a child. His father died trying to permanently absorb fire magic from Fae bones. He and Darius still practice bone magic together, illegally excavating graves of powerful Fae to harvest remains for training. They made a pact that Orion would help Darius become strong enough to kill Lionel Acrux for his position on the Celestial Council.

Orion believes Darcy may be his Elysian Mate, the fated soulmate chosen by the stars. They power-share, their magic intertwining in an intoxicating rush. The only other people he has managed this with are Darius and his deceased sister, Clara.

The mention of Clara causes Orion visible pain. He explains that Lionel and Orion’s mother, Stella, manipulated Clara after she graduated from Zodiac Academy. Lionel bonded with her and allowed her to feed exclusively from his blood, making her addicted to his power. He took her to the same clifftop where the twins underwent their ritual. While Orion was bound and forced to watch, the shadows killed his sister. Lionel then forcibly created the Guardian bond between Orion and Darius, using it to control Orion and ensure he would protect Darius. Orion vows to see Lionel dead. Deeply moved, Darcy offers Orion her blood. As he feeds from her neck, she also pledges to help destroy Lionel.

Chapter 19 Summary: “Tory”

After another night plagued by shadow-induced insomnia, Tory wakes late and heads to The Orb during her free period. She sits by a fireplace, feeling her fire magic naturally replenish from the flames. She sends Caleb a suggestive photo of a grazing Pegasus as a taunt about his rumored fetish.

Darius enters and confronts her. He traps them inside a dome of fire to hide them from onlookers. She accuses him of caring what she thinks despite claiming to want her gone. He asks if she is using the shadows again and warns that if his father discovers it, she will be in real danger. Tory points out that Darius himself is the reason she feels drawn to the shadows for protection.

They argue intensely. Darius claims they are alike. However, he confesses he cannot control his obsession with her. Before she can respond, he drops the fire wall and blasts her across the room with water magic, leaving with a smug expression. After cleaning herself, Tory exchanges hostile text messages with Caleb, who demands she come to his room that night. She refuses, amused.

Tory joins Darcy, Sofia, and Diego for their first Physical Enhancement class with Professor Prestos. When Kylie complains that the Vega twins’ possession of all four elements gives them an unfair advantage in the obstacle course assessment, Prestos explains that power imbalance is fundamental to Fae society, and students must learn to deal with it.

The race begins with students using magic and physical prowess to overcome various obstacles. Tory finishes first and Darcy second, with Sofia also performing impressively despite lower magical power. On the way to the showers, Tory declares to Darcy that they must stop downplaying who they are and focus on learning to defeat the Heirs on their own terms.

Chapter 20 Summary: “Max”

On Saturday night, the four Heirs work out in their private gym. They have gathered to discuss recent Nymph threats and, unbeknownst to Darius, address his deteriorating emotional state.

Seth brings up Caleb’s disastrous date with Tory. When pressed, Darius reveals surprisingly detailed knowledge of what would make a perfect date for her. Caleb challenges him about his feelings for Tory. Darius deflects, saying his father would never allow him to date a Vega.

Max and Caleb press further, asking if Lionel uses Coercion to prevent Darius from discussing certain topics. When specifically asked about Dark Coercion, an illegal form of magic, Darius remains silent. He then drops his mental shields, allowing Max to feel his emotions directly: overwhelming anxiety, darkness, and pain he has been hiding for years. Despite Darius’s claims, Max feels that he’s lying. The Heirs realize Lionel has been using forbidden magic to control Darius since his power was Awakened.

Later, Max catches Darius looking at an underwear photo Tory sent him on the night of the Eclipse. When confronted, Darius admits his obsession with her but acknowledges it can go nowhere.

The four Heirs decide to perform a secrecy oath, binding their confessions with combined magic. Max reveals his father had him with a mistress before marrying for political reasons, and Max believes his stepmother poisoned his real mother. The others swear their loyalty regardless of his bloodline. Caleb confesses that shortly after being Awakened, he nearly killed a girl while feeding as a Vampire because he was too drunk to control himself. Darius reveals his younger brother Xavier Emerged as a Pegasus, an Order considered shameful by their “pure-blood” Dragon family. Lionel keeps Xavier imprisoned and physically abuses him for losing control of his Order form.

The Heirs identify Lionel as their greatest threat. However, they agree they must first eliminate the Vega twins as a distraction by proceeding with their plan to publicly humiliate them at a Halloween party. Caleb reluctantly agrees but makes clear his discomfort with targeting Tory.

Chapter 21 Summary: “Tory”

Tory reads a school-wide announcement from Principal Nova about the dangers of Halloween. The sun is traveling the Via Combusta, triggering an astrological alignment bringing chaos and bad luck and amplifying dark natures. The message advises students to resolve feuds, warns predatory Orders to avoid shifting, and offers magical restraints from Orion for those who fear losing control. The announcement places full responsibility on students to manage themselves rather than canceling the upcoming party.

Tory receives a mandatory House message from Darius about attending the Halloween party in costume, followed by private messages from him, referencing the underwear photo she previously sent. She curtly replies.

Darcy, Sofia, and Geraldine arrive to get ready together. Tory’s costume is a glittery Pegasus, a deliberate taunt aimed at Caleb’s rumored fetish. Sofia uses a special spell to cover every inch of Tory’s skin in pink, silver, and purple glitter that will not smudge or rub off. While preparing, Sofia mentions a new pen pal named Phillip, an Emerged Pegasus. Tory suspects this might be Xavier Acrux but stays quiet. Darius sends Tory a shirtless photo of himself in his fire-themed costume; she does not reply but does not delete it either.

The group finishes their costumes and heads to the party in the Earth Caverns. On the dance floor, Caleb grabs Tory and pulls her into a side passage, angry about her Pegasus costume and accusing her of mocking his reputation. He struggles visibly with his attraction to her but ultimately says he cannot be around her tonight and leaves. Tory decides not to let him ruin her evening.

Chapter 22 Summary: “Darcy”

Darcy enjoys the elaborate party atmosphere in the Earth Caverns, drinking magically enhanced punch. The four Heirs arrive dressed as their House Elements: Max as water, Seth as air, Caleb as earth, and Darius as fire. Max attempts to flirt with Geraldine, who dismisses him. Caleb commands Tory to dance with him. Darcy heads to find water.

A cloaked man in a mask grabs her wrist. It is Orion. Despite the risk, they dance together intimately on the crowded floor. Orion pulls Darcy into a dark side tunnel. After removing his mask and casting a silencing bubble, they have sex against the cave wall. When they finish, Seth appears, revealing he followed them and watched everything.

Seth explains that if he reports them, Orion could go to prison for manipulating a Solarian Princess, even if the relationship was consensual. Memories can be magically altered, making it nearly impossible to prove otherwise. Orion must do whatever Seth asks to avoid this.

Darcy realizes they have no choice but to submit to Seth’s blackmail to protect Orion. She convinces Orion to agree. Before leaving, Orion threatens to kill Seth if he harms Darcy. Seth orders Darcy to put on her underwear and prepare to tell everyone they just hooked up together.

Chapter 23 Summary: “Seth”

Seth discovers that Tory does not know about Darcy and Orion’s relationship, surprising him that the twins have kept secrets from each other. He invites Darcy to hit him to make their story more believable; she attacks him furiously, scratching and punching until he stops her.

They return to the party, where Seth forces Darcy to tell Tory and their friends that she had hateful sex with him. Everyone is shocked and disbelieving, especially Tory. Geraldine makes a crude comment about all of them having slept with Heirs. Darcy leaves the dance floor in distress, with Tory following.

Seth tells Darius and Max that he has blackmail material on Darcy but withholds the specific details. The Heirs proceed with their plan to ruin the Vegas. When Darius holds out potions, Caleb refuses to participate and leaves. Max takes the red potion intended for Tory while Seth keeps the purple one for Darcy, along with their respective antidotes.

Max successfully slips his potion into Tory’s drink. Seth then finds Darcy sitting with Diego and, using his blackmail, forces her to drink his potion. He plants the suggestion of ravens in her mind. As the potions take effect, Seth and the Heirs begin recording with their Atlases.

Darcy begins screaming about attacking ravens and loses control of her air magic, knocking students off their feet. Tory’s potion makes skin-to-skin contact feel orgasmic; she becomes hypersexual, grinding on multiple people and removing her dress. When Geraldine tries to help, Max intervenes to stop her. Darius moves toward Tory to administer her antidote.

Seth carries the hallucinating Darcy through the crowd, who applaud him for apparently helping her. He takes her back to Aer Tower and to her room. Once inside, he gives her the antidote. Still lost in the effects of the potion, she clings to him, begging him to make the Heirs stop tormenting her. As she falls asleep, she refuses to bow to their whims. Seth realizes her will is as unbreakable as his own. He covers her with a blanket and leaves, forcing his conflicting emotions deep down as he returns to the party.

Chapters 16-23 Analysis

The theme of The Corrupting Influence of Power and Legacy is primarily embodied by the unseen but ever-present Lionel Acrux. The Heirs’ secrecy oath in King’s Hollow functions as a crucial exposition of this legacy, revealing that their bond is forged by both shared privilege and shared trauma stemming from Lionel’s influence. Max’s illegitimacy, Caleb’s brush with fatal violence, and Darius’s secret about his brother Xavier all represent deviations from the perfected, powerful image their families demand. Darius’s revelation that his father physically abuses Xavier for Emerging as a Pegasus—an Order deemed weak—and uses illegal Dark Coercion to control Darius himself solidifies Lionel’s role as the story’s primary antagonist. This legacy of abuse and control directly drives Orion and Darius’s secret pact to kill him and motivates the Heirs’ plan to neutralize the Vega twins, whom they view as a distraction from the true threat. Their plot to humiliate the twins reflects Lionel’s methods: using power to enforce submission and eliminate perceived threats to their established order.

This brutal environment forces the characters to navigate a social hierarchy where power is paramount. Professor Prestos’s speech in Physical Enhancement class articulates the academy’s core philosophy, explaining that in Solaria, those “with the most power are always at an advantage” and it is up to the less powerful “to find ways to utilise what you’ve got” (355). Her words frame the narrative’s conflicts as a microcosm of Solarian society, where survival depends on the strategic application of one’s assets. The twins embody this struggle. Darcy finds unexpected strength in the hyper-masculine arena of Pitball, her successful defense against Seth serving as a pivotal moment of self-realization. Tory, conversely, confronts the hyper-feminine world of cheerleading not with compliance but with subversion, altering the uniform and using her magical prowess to dominate the space on her own terms. Her decision after the Physical Enhancement assessment to stop downplaying their status signals a conscious choice to embrace their power, a necessary evolution for Survival and Resilience in the Face of Trauma within the academy’s predatory environment.

These struggles for power extend into the characters’ personal relationships, where the narrative explores The Interplay of Fate and Free Will. Orion introduces the concept of the Elysian Mate, framing his powerful connection to Darcy as a destiny written in the stars. This contrasts sharply with Tory and Caleb’s disastrous date, which underscores the limits of physical attraction and highlights the importance of genuine understanding in forming a connection. Their incompatibility demonstrates that proximity and desire are insufficient without authentic compatibility. Darius’s relationship with Tory exists in a more ambiguous space. He attempts to rationalize his destructive behavior by claiming they “don’t get to choose [their] obsessions” and that Tory is his (351). This presents his actions as a product of a fate-like compulsion, blurring the line between an external destiny and his own willful choices to pursue and torment her.

The constant threat of exposure makes secrecy and surveillance critical for survival. Relationships are shielded by silencing bubbles and clandestine meetings, transforming privacy into a necessary defense mechanism. Orion’s history with his sister, Darius’s pact to kill his father, and the Heirs’ oath are all secrets that bind characters together in dangerous alliances. This dynamic is violently upended when Seth discovers Darcy and Orion’s affair. He weaponizes their secret, turning a private sanctuary into a tool for blackmail and control. The Halloween party represents the apotheosis of this theme, where surveillance becomes an act of aggression. The Heirs use their Atlases to record the twins’ drug-induced humiliation, intending to broadcast their private vulnerability as a public spectacle to destroy their reputations. This act demonstrates how, in the world of the academy, the control of information and the violation of privacy are potent weapons in the ongoing struggle for dominance.

The narrative structure reinforces these themes through parallel plotting and foreshadowing, building a palpable sense of dread that culminates in the Halloween party. The twins are often subjected to parallel trials, such as being forced into gender-stereotyped sports, which highlights their distinct yet complementary paths of development. The coordinated drugging at the party is the starkest example of this parallelism, emphasizing their shared vulnerability. Foreshadowing also plays a key role; Darcy’s recurring dream of a female voice calling from the shadows directly anticipates the later revelation of Orion’s sister, Clara. Likewise, Principal Nova’s formal announcement about the Via Combusta—a celestial event that amplifies chaos and dark natures—provides a cosmic context for the Heirs’ cruelty. The section concludes on a note of violated agency, yet it also plants a seed of resilience. In her stupor, Darcy resists Seth’s attempt to break her spirit, whispering that she won’t “bow” to him. His recognition of her unbreakable will foreshadows her capacity to endure the trauma inflicted upon her and signals the failure of the Heirs’ ultimate plan to crush her spirit.
