Romantasy is a fantasy subgenre in which romance plays a central role in the story, blending the emotional intensity of a love story with the high stakes of a fantasy setting. Magic, politics, and dangerous conflict often surround a romantic relationship that develops throughout the work. This romantic plot is significant and often the driving force behind the characters’ choices and conflict. These stories often rely on storylines common in the romance genre broadly, including slow-burn relationships, enemies-to-lovers plotlines, or morally complicated relationships. The protagonist is typically a woman, and her love interest is often someone cursed, dangerous, or tied to the enemy. The connection between characters usually develops through forced proximity, a mix of tentative trust and potential betrayal, and shared missions.
Romantasy also focuses on characters facing difficult decisions. They often must choose between love and duty or between survival and connection. The world around them is rarely safe or simple, which makes the romance more intense and riskier. Recent popular examples—such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, Serpent and the Wings of Night, and Fourth Wing—have helped define and popularize the genre, especially in the young adult and new adult markets. Social media platforms like BookTok (a subsection of TikTok with content focused on authors, books, and reading) have further fueled its rise, creating massive and passionate fan communities. The premise of Shield of Sparrows draws particularly on Danielle L. Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom, a 2018 romantasy, as well as Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy classic The Witcher, featuring a once-human monster hunter made something else through a curious elixir and an enemies-to-lovers romance between a prince and a princess sent to betray him.
Perry is the author of over 50 romance novels. Some of her most popular romance series include Jamison Valley (2017-2019), Lark Cove (2018-2022), The Edens (2021-2023), and Clifton Forge (2019-2021). Shield of Sparrows (2025) is her fantasy romance debut and a number one New York Times and USA Today bestseller.
Perry aspired to be a doctor when she was young. In college, she shifted from pre-med to economics before entering the tech industry. However, while looking for a hobby and additional mental stimulation in 2017, Perry began writing romance. With the release of her debut, The Coppersmith Farmhouse (2017), she transitioned into writing full-time. A prolific author, Perry drafts and edits her novels within a few months and has been known to release several novels each year.
Perry’s Montana roots heavily influence her settings; she specializes in small-town romances with emotional depth and strong character arcs, writing stories rich in themes of family, community, and redemption. These influences all show up in Shield of Sparrows as well. Odessa discovers found family in the group of people she befriends in Turah, the geography of which resembles the mountains and forested wilderness of Montana. In interviews, Perry has also mentioned that her favorite quality in a protagonist is honesty (Barnes & Noble Press. “20 Questions with…Devney Perry.” Barnes & Noble Press Blog, 20 Apr. 2021). This preference is evident in Shield of Sparrows, as trust and honesty are very important to Odessa’s character.
