The second book in the Warriors: A Starless Clan series follows three young cats navigating crises across their Clans. The story is set in a world where five wild cat Clans live around a lake, governed by a warrior code and guided by StarClan, the spirits of their dead ancestors. Each Clan has a leader who receives nine lives from StarClan, a deputy, medicine cats who heal the sick and communicate with StarClan, and warriors who hunt and defend borders.
In a prologue set in StarClan, Reedwhisker, the former RiverClan deputy, begs his mother Mistystar, the former RiverClan leader, to warn the living Clans that RiverClan has lost both its leader and deputy. Mistystar refuses, insisting the Clan must find its own way.
In ShadowClan, the warrior Sunbeam is stung by the pity her Clanmates show after Blazefire, a tom she expected to become her mate, rejected her and grew close to her best friend Lightleap. A health crisis overshadows her troubles: Tigerstar, ShadowClan's leader, brings his kit Rowankit to the medicine den with a severe fever suspected to be greencough, a deadly respiratory illness treatable only with catmint, a medicinal herb. The Clan's supply is nearly gone, and patrols to the other Clans yield almost nothing. RiverClan's medicine cat Mothwing refuses to let ShadowClan enter their territory, and Sunbeam notices that RiverClan's warriors seem to be hiding something. Meanwhile, Sunbeam's mother Berryheart blames Fringewhisker, a former SkyClan cat who joined ShadowClan to be with Sunbeam's brother Spireclaw, for bringing whitecough, a milder respiratory illness, to the Clan. Several warriors agree, calling cats who switch Clans "Clan-swappers." Tigerstar calls an emergency meeting of all Clan medicine cats at the Moonpool, a sacred pool where medicine cats commune with StarClan.
In ThunderClan, Nightheart, a young black-furred warrior, chafes under constant comparison to his legendary ancestor Firestar. He rejected the warrior name "Flameheart" at his naming ceremony because it echoed Firestar's old name, asking to be called Nightheart instead. His mother Sparkpelt and sister Finchlight refuse to share prey with him over this perceived insult. After he disobeys senior warrior Lionblaze on a hunting patrol and injures himself, the Clan's low opinion of him deepens. At the emergency medicine-cat meeting, the healers agree to send a joint patrol to a distant Twolegplace (a human settlement) where SkyClan remembers catmint growing. Jayfeather, one of ThunderClan's medicine cats, recommends Nightheart, and Squirrelflight, ThunderClan's deputy, agrees.
In RiverClan, the medicine-cat apprentice Frostpaw is consumed by grief over her mother Curlfeather, who was killed by dogs while traveling to the Moonpool to receive her nine lives as RiverClan's new leader. Curlfeather's dying words, "Trust no cat," haunt Frostpaw. RiverClan has been concealing from the other Clans that both Mistystar and Reedwhisker are dead. Mothwing, Frostpaw's mentor, has been holding the Clan together but urges Frostpaw to ask StarClan who should be the next leader, since Frostpaw is the only RiverClan cat with a connection to their ancestors. At the Moonpool, Frostpaw sees Curlfeather, who tells her StarClan cannot name the next leader and advises her to "look beyond the obvious choices."
The catmint patrol assembles: Sunbeam and Lightleap from ShadowClan, Nightheart and ThunderClan's medicine cat Alderheart, and Rootspring and Fidgetflake from SkyClan. Nightheart and Sunbeam develop a close friendship over the journey, hunting together and confiding in each other. When Sunbeam becomes trapped under a wire fence near a tractor, Nightheart calms her and frees her. The patrol reaches the Twolegplace, where a kittypet (a pet cat) directs them to a massive catmint bush. They gather more than enough for all the Clans.
Frostpaw settles on Owlnose, a loyal but untested RiverClan brown tabby tom, as her choice for leader. Reactions are mixed. Owlnose names the young warrior Splashtail as deputy but struggles to project authority, and when a hunting patrol is injured in a riverbank collapse, he freezes with guilt. Frostpaw takes Owlnose to the Moonpool, but StarClan does not appear, and he returns to camp shaken.
Sunbeam and Lightleap race back to ShadowClan with catmint, only to find the camp in mourning: Rowankit died just before dawn. That night, Berryheart holds a secret meeting with allies who blame Fringewhisker and recent warrior code changes allowing cats to switch Clans for the sickness. Sunbeam attends but strongly disagrees.
Tigerstar calls an emergency Gathering. Owlnose climbs the leaders' branch, shocking every cat. Mothwing announces that Mistystar and Reedwhisker are both dead. Under fierce questioning, Owlnose confesses he never received nine lives. Tigerstar proposes that ShadowClan take over running RiverClan, but his own mother Tawnypelt objects, invoking the memory of the original Tigerstar, who once manipulated RiverClan into a disastrous alliance. Leafstar, SkyClan's leader, offers a compromise: She will send Fidgetflake to help RiverClan take Owlnose to the Moonpool for his nine-lives ceremony. RiverClan reluctantly accepts.
In ThunderClan, Nightheart is assigned menial duties. While cleaning Bramblestar's den, he accidentally reveals that Squirrelflight took a patrol to WindClan without permission from Bramblestar, ThunderClan's leader. Bramblestar later asks Nightheart to sneak into ShadowClan and use his friendship with Sunbeam to learn Tigerstar's plans, but when Nightheart recruits his friend Bayshine, Bayshine tells Squirrelflight, who cancels the mission.
Fidgetflake discovers RiverClan's herb stores are dangerously low. On the trail to the Moonpool, he mentions that WindClan patrols have found prey bones on the moor, suggesting someone lured the dogs that killed Curlfeather. Frostpaw is shaken. At the Moonpool, Owlnose refuses to proceed, confessing he does not want to be leader, and walks away.
In ShadowClan, Berryheart and her allies trick Fringewhisker into giving a squirrel to a SkyClan patrol, then accuse her of disloyalty. Sunbeam confronts her mother, who admits the scheme and reveals her deeper fear: The rogue Darktail once infiltrated ShadowClan, seized power, and nearly destroyed the Clan. Sunbeam is sympathetic but refuses to accept the cruelty.
Despite Squirrelflight's prohibition, Nightheart sneaks into ShadowClan to see Sunbeam. He hints at wanting to join, and Sunbeam, whose views on cats switching Clans have shifted, tells him he would be welcome. After he leaves, Sunbeam catches Blazefire and Lightleap in a romantic moment but realizes the pain she expected does not come; she has been thinking about Nightheart instead.
After Owlnose's refusal, Frostpaw tries one final time to reach StarClan and sees only darkness. She confesses to Mothwing that she fears she has never truly connected with StarClan. Mothwing urges secrecy, but Frostpaw resolves to tell the truth. As they return to camp at dawn, they find Tigerstar in the clearing with a large ShadowClan patrol.
In ThunderClan, Squirrelflight confronts Nightheart for sneaking out. He erupts, announcing before the entire Clan that he is leaving. He storms into ShadowClan's camp and tells Blazefire he intends to become Sunbeam's mate. Blazefire stares in disbelief.
Tigerstar claims he has come to help RiverClan. Splashtail and Mothwing demand he leave. The RiverClan warrior Duskfur attacks Cloverfoot, a ShadowClan warrior, triggering a full battle. ShadowClan's coordinated assault overwhelms RiverClan's disorganized defense. Tigerstar pins Duskfur by her throat, and Splashtail surrenders to prevent further deaths. Tigerstar immediately begins giving orders, effectively taking command. Sunbeam watches Splashtail's hatred-filled stare and wonders whether RiverClan will ever believe the ShadowClan leader truly wants to help.
