Plot Summary

Eighteen-year-old Lily lives with her younger sister Rosie and their mother Lydia at Pippi Beach, an isolated Australian beach settlement accessible only by boat or a long hike. They occupy a beachfront house owned by Lily's Aunt Jane, where they landed six years earlier after Lydia's string of failed jobs, apartments, and relationships. Lydia cleans holiday homes for a living. When four young visitors arrive by yacht at Pippi's most expensive property, Lydia identifies one as American movie star Casey Brandon. Lily, the eldest of the cousins, dismisses the fuss, but her cousin Juliet, Aunt Lizzie's only child and Lily's closest companion, is quietly intrigued. Both have just finished high school, and Lily, despite her intelligence, remains uncertain about her future.

At the weekly community drinks, the visitors appear: Casey, his sister Cecilia, her friend Yumi, and Oscar-nominated actor Dorian Khan, who speaks with a British accent despite being originally from Geelong, Australia. Casey charms everyone effortlessly while Dorian refuses to engage, spending the evening on his phone. When Casey points Lily out, Dorian dismisses her as "suburban." Lily overhears every word. Casey later introduces himself warmly to Lily, Juliet, and their friend Nicola, but Dorian walks off without apology.

Over the following days, Casey becomes a fixture around Pippi, often lingering to talk with Juliet, who is clearly smitten. At the next Friday drinks, Dorian abruptly invites Lily to dinner; startled, she declines. Soon after, Casey invites Juliet to the cliff house for dinner. Lydia forces her niece into wedge heels, and Juliet falls on the steep steps, badly spraining her ankle. Lily rushes up to help and agrees to stay for the meal, which proves awkward: Cecilia is condescending, Yumi is blunt, and Dorian barely speaks.

Lily returns the next evening for a second dinner, during which she challenges Dorian's rigid prioritization of work over personal connection. Cecilia and Casey leap to his defense, and Lily notices that everyone protects the most powerful person in the room. On the deck afterward, she teases Dorian for refusing to join a night swim and for taking himself too seriously. He watches her intently. The next morning, Casey carries Juliet piggyback to the beachfront house, and the family erupts with excitement.

A new visitor arrives for New Year's: Wilson Collins, whose mother Charlotte is Aunt Jane's old friend and lives in Beverly Hills. Wilson is loud, status-obsessed, and constantly references his boss, Hollywood producer Stacy Black. He fixates on Lily; she tolerates him because she and Nicola plan to stay at Charlotte's guesthouse during a trip to Los Angeles. Also arriving at Pippi is Alex King, a charming British backpacker who tells Lily that he and Dorian were best friends at boarding school and that Dorian had him fired from a film out of jealousy. Lily believes him because the story confirms her low opinion of Dorian. She tells only Juliet, who gently pushes back, but Lily dismisses her cousin as too trusting.

On New Year's Eve, Casey and Juliet share their first kiss. The next morning, the cliff house yacht abruptly departs. Casey promises to get Juliet's number through Cecilia, but Juliet's texts go unanswered and she never receives Casey's contact information. Lily blames Dorian and Cecilia for deliberately freezing Juliet out. Aunt Kitty, Lily's favorite aunt, visits and privately warns Lily that charming people can be deceptive, echoing Cecilia's earlier caution that Alex is "fake" and "sharp," a warning Lily also dismissed.

Months later, Lily and Nicola arrive in Los Angeles and settle into Charlotte's Beverly Hills guesthouse. At Stacy Black's production office, they unexpectedly encounter Dorian and his assistant Franklin. At a lunch at Stacy's mansion, Stacy pressures Lily into performing a ukulele song; Lily complies without submission, earning quiet respect. In conversation, Franklin reveals that Dorian intervened at Pippi to protect Casey from a "local fangirl" who got "infatuated." Lily realizes with horror that Franklin is describing Juliet and that Dorian orchestrated Casey's silence.

Dorian takes Lily to Griffith Observatory, but the outing is strained. He praises Pippi's beauty, then remarks that Lily must love being away from "those people" and her mother. Lily replies coldly that she misses her family. Days later, Dorian arrives unannounced at the guesthouse and confesses his feelings, asking Lily to stay in LA. His declaration is laced with qualifiers, including a reference to her mother being a cleaner, as though the gap were an obstacle he has heroically overcome. Lily refuses him with fury, accusing him of ruining Alex's career and keeping Casey from Juliet. Dorian insists Alex is a liar who assaulted Stacy Black and admits he used Cecilia to separate Casey and Juliet, citing Lydia's potential for damaging gossip. Lily stands firm, and Dorian leaves.

Shaken, Lily investigates Dorian's claims. She seeks out Stacy's teenage daughter Inez, who confirms that Alex pursued Stacy, moved in, spent her money, cheated, and shoved her down the stairs. Dorian paid Alex off and absorbed public scrutiny to protect Stacy. Lily is devastated to realize she misjudged both men: Alex told her exactly what she wanted to hear, while Dorian, however blunt, was always honest. Meanwhile, Nicola reveals she is dating Wilson and staying in LA. Their friendship fractures, and Lily flies home alone.

Back in Australia, Lily visits Aunt Kitty in Melbourne and tours the set of Dorian's new film. Dorian unexpectedly appears, warm and friendly, and introduces his sister Sigrid, a psychology student at Cambridge. Lily attends a premiere with Dorian's group and feels comfortable with him for the first time. Afterward, he invites her to the theater, and she accepts immediately.

On the night of the date, Rosie calls in a panic: Lydia has run off with Alex to an island, leaving Rosie stranded and broke in Cairns. Lily cancels the date. Dorian offers to pay for a private plane; Lily refuses, insisting she must handle her family's problems herself. He leaves, hurt. With Aunt Kitty's help, Lily gets Rosie to safety. The aunts intervene, and Lily and Rosie move into Aunt Jane's Sydney house. Aunt Lizzie counsels Lily to stop trying to fix Lydia and to focus on what is right in front of her.

Lydia eventually returns, subdued and apologetic. She reveals that Alex abused her, hitting her and cheating on her. Lydia went to the police and is pursuing prosecution with another of Alex's victims. When Alex calls asking for money, Lily firmly refuses and hangs up. Lydia embraces Lily and vows to be worthy of her daughter.

The family returns to Pippi. Lily channels her energy into fighting a plan to use the settlement as a film location, submitting a comprehensive document to the local council. The work restores her sense of purpose, and she enrolls in environmental science. She later learns the production company withdrew its application before the council even voted. Wilson reveals that Dorian refused to do the film at Pippi, citing the landscape and wildlife, effectively killing the project for Lily's sake.

Stacy Black lands a helicopter on the Pippi green and demands Lily tell Dorian to reverse his decision. Lily refuses. Stacy accuses Lily of being in love with Dorian, and the words strike with the force of revelation: Lily realizes Stacy is right.

Just before Christmas, Casey and Dorian return to Pippi on the ferry with backpacks instead of a yacht. Casey reunites joyfully with Juliet, revealing that Cecilia never passed along her messages. Dorian asks Lily to walk with him. She thanks him for saving Pippi and tells him about her decision to study environmental science. He apologizes for not warning anyone about Alex sooner. When he asks if her feelings have changed since LA, Lily kisses him. They apologize for past misjudgments, and Dorian tells her that Stacy, in confronting Lily, inadvertently gave him hope. On Christmas Eve, the whole family gathers at Pippi. Lily and Dorian walk hand in hand along the beach at sunset, embracing the uncertainty of their future while feeling certain of the present moment.
