Such Quiet Girls (2025) is a thriller by American novelist Noelle Ihli. 10 children and their new daycare-bus driver, Jessa, are abducted in broad daylight and buried alive, forcing both captives and families into a time-critical fight for survival. Plot Summary

Jessa Landon is working as a bus driver for the Bright Beginnings childcare center, located near Boise, Iowa. She is responsible for picking up children from several elementary schools and driving them to the childcare center. Jessa has only recently begun this job and obtained it under false pretenses, using a different last name. Years earlier, Jessa’s marriage to a man named Matt became abusive. Jessa did her best to protect herself and her young daughter, Sophie. One night, during a violent altercation with Matt, Jessa fought back and stabbed Matt with a fireplace poker, killing him. Sophie witnessed this act of violence, and the trauma of this experience left her unwilling to interact with her mother. Jessa served two years in prison for manslaughter; after she got out, she found it very difficult to get a job with a criminal record. Desperate to establish a settled life so that she can regain custody of her daughter, Jessa lied to get the job at Bright Beginnings.

One Friday, Jessa is driving the bus with 10 children aboard, including sisters Sage and Bonnie. Jessa notices that the road is blocked by an orange sign, so she turns onto a small dirt road. There, the road is blocked again, this time by another vehicle. After the bus is forced to stop, two men approach the bus, armed with guns. The two men are Ted and Andy, both in their early 20s. Ted formerly worked as a bus driver for Bright Beginnings himself, but was fired due to cursing in front of the children after narrowly avoiding an accident. He has since served time for drug possession and has struggled to find work, but eventually ended up working alongside his longtime friend, Andy, at a quarry owned by Andy’s father. Embittered, Ted shared his fantasies of kidnapping some of the children who attend Bright Beginnings and holding them for ransom. Andy and Ted concocted a plan for holding the children in a bunker made out of an abandoned shipping container, buried in a rubble pit at the quarry.

After they halt the bus, Ted and Andy (who have disguised their faces) force Jessa and the children out of the bus at gunpoint. They force them to board a van with blacked-out windows and drive to the quarry. At the quarry, Jessa and the children are forced down a shaft with a ladder, descending into the bunker. During this ordeal, Jessa urges the children to be quiet and compliant. Due to her traumatic history of abuse, Jessa believes this is the best option for staying safe. However, 11-year-old Sage is frustrated by Jessa’s response. She pays careful attention to the kidnappers and surroundings, determined to find a way to escape.

While Andy forces the children into the bunker, Ted hides the bus in a deserted orchard. He also puts the ransom plan into effect. Ted and Andy know that Sage and Bonnie are the daughters of Sheena Halverson, who works as the City Council Treasurer and has access to city council funds. Ted delivers an anonymous ransom note with precise instructions to Sheena’s home, detailing how she needs to withdraw $50,000 in cash and also send a digital transfer for two million dollars. The note cautions Sheena that if she goes to the police, she will never see her daughters again. If she fulfills all the instructions correctly, the children will be returned safely.

Sheena finds the note after she goes to pick up her daughters and learns that the bus has mysteriously vanished. Like the parents of the other children, Sheena is panicked and terrified. She had already been facing stressors before the kidnapping, as her father (who lives with them) has worsening Alzheimer’s. Sheena decides to follow the instructions without alerting the police. She knows this is risky, but she believes it is the best chance of protecting her daughters. She places her father in an assisted living facility, Cherished Hearts, located in the foothills near the quarry. The following day, Sheena begins carrying out the elaborate instructions, withdrawing cash from a number of different banks.

Meanwhile, the children are trapped in the bunker. They have access to food and water and an air hose providing oxygen, but they don’t know what their kidnappers are planning. Sage refuses to passively await her fate; she devises a plan where, by standing on a pile of mattresses, she can reach the plywood covering the hole in the top of the bunker, which connects to the shaft. Sage begins tearing and scraping at the wood; her courage rallies the other children, and eventually Jessa also begins to support Sage’s plan. After working continuously for most of the night and subsequent day, by Saturday evening, Sage has created a hole in the plywood as well as footholds in the walls of the shaft, allowing her to climb to the surface. However, when Sage climbs out, the shaft collapses behind her. It is now even more urgent for her to get help because Jessa and the remaining children are in danger of being crushed or suffocated in the bunker.

Meanwhile, Ted and Andy have gone to retrieve the cash from the drop-off point at an isolated trailhead. Sheena has included what appears to be an expensive watch in the bag with the cash, claiming it can be sold and offset the fact that some of the cash is missing. Unbeknownst to them, the watch contains a tracking device. Sheena begins to track the movements of the kidnappers. However, she can’t follow them because she must return home and complete the digital transfer of the remaining ransom money. When Ted and Andy get back to the quarry, Ted quickly notices that someone has escaped from the bunker. He finds Sage hiding nearby but delays alerting Andy. When Andy catches sight of Sage, he reacts with rage, pursuing her and shooting at her. Sage sprints away, with Andy close behind her. Left alone, Ted realizes that the remaining children are going to die in the bunker if he doesn’t intervene. He begins using an excavator to clear away the debris, hoping to liberate them.

Sage sprints towards the closest lights she can see and bursts into a building located not far from the quarry—the Cherished Hearts elder care facility, where her grandfather is staying. While she tries to explain the urgent need for help, Andy attempts to enter the building behind her. Sage’s grandfather, who worked for decades as a police officer, disarms Andy, who flees. While these events are unfolding, Sheena realizes she needs help and phones the police, directing them to the last location the tracking device pinged: The road where Cherished Hearts is located. These storylines converge when the police arrive at Cherished Hearts just as the staff is calling for assistance. Sage directs them to go to the quarry as quickly as possible.

Sheena is still on the phone when she receives a call from Sage at Cherished Hearts. She races to reunite with her older daughter. Meanwhile, the police arrive at the quarry and arrest Ted. Since he started excavating the pit, the police can finish the job quickly and soon liberate Jessa, Bonnie, and the other children. Everyone survives, although the timing was extremely tight and any delays would have been fatal. Andy is eventually caught and arrested as well.

Sheena is filled with gratitude at being reunited with her daughters and learns that her father will receive a new treatment protocol, which may reduce the severity of his cognitive symptoms. While Jessa recovers from injuries, her daughter, Sophie, comes to visit, setting the stage for an eventual reconciliation between mother and daughter.
