Mr. Shark approaches the guards wearing the pink dress. He asks a guard to open all the cages so he can look inside them. The guard seems to find Mr. Shark attractive and does exactly what he asks. Meanwhile, Mr. Wolf instructs Mr. Snake and Mr. Piranha to attach themselves to a grappling hook, and Mr. Wolf attempts to throw it through the building’s window. He misses several times, bashing his friends against the wall in the process. Inside, Mr. Shark pretends to have lost his dog and begins crying when he can’t find it. Mr. Wolf finally succeeds in his throw, and Mr. Snake and Mr. Piranha are thrown through the window and into the building. Mr. Wolf pulls away in the car with the grappling hook attached and breaks open the wall. The new heroes help the dogs escape, but the dogs are terrified of their rescuers and run screaming.
The four unlikely friends sit around the table eating fast food and drinking soda. They all agree that helping felt pretty good, and they decide to keep being good guys from now on. Mr. Wolf brings everyone into a group hug, much to Mr. Snake’s displeasure, and then they drive away in Mr. Wolf’s awesome car. On the way to their next destination, Mr. Piranha passes gas again.
One noteworthy illustration in these closing chapters is Mr. Wolf’s poster featuring photos of the animal shelter inmates, which humorously portrays the dogs as tough, menacing figures. The guard, a gorilla, is depicted as exceptionally menacing, adding to the comic absurdity. The dogs themselves are drawn with exaggerated tough-guy features, subverting expectations and adding humor to the situation. These illustrations not only entertain but also serve to visually communicate the characters’ personalities and the tone of the story, displaying the humor that characterizes the book and the rest of the series.
The narrative’s rising action builds tension as Mr. Wolf believes the group is ready to take on a real rescue mission. The phrase “their hopes and dreams are trapped behind walls of stone and bars of steel” uses metaphor to show the sad and hopeless lives of the dogs and to emphasize the importance of the mission (97). The climax occurs when the group successfully breaks into the jail and releases the dogs, marking a pivotal moment in their new careers as good guys.
Mr. Wolf’s desire to be a “good guy” is clear, but his approach still lacks empathy, showing that he still doesn’t completely understand what that means. He disregards the feelings and desires of his companions, particularly Mr. Snake and Mr. Piranha, whom he physically throws against the jail wall multiple times in his eagerness to execute his plans. This behavior highlights his single-mindedness and lack of consideration for others. In contrast, as the story progresses, the other animals begin to discover the satisfaction of doing good deeds. Their characters and motivations evolve, indicating a shift from their initial reluctance to embrace their roles as “good guys.” This development adds depth to the characters and demonstrates personal growth while highlighting the fact that Mr. Wolf, the instigator of the whole plan, may be falling behind his friends when it comes to true change and growth.
The characters’ innate traits are not easily changed and endure despite their attempts at Transformation and Going Against One’s Nature. Mr. Wolf keeps using his go-to strategies from fairy tales, convincing Mr. Shark to wear a disguise because he thinks it’s the best option. This behavior emphasizes how hard it is to alter one’s nature and how ingrained habits may be. The group is still seen as a wolf, shark, snake, and piranha—four predators with a single objective—even after the dogs have been saved, and to some extent, they still see themselves that way. Nonetheless, the characters show a change in motivation and a desire to keep up their good deeds as they start to recognize the importance of doing good.
The group’s unconventional methods in these chapters also continue to emphasize the theme of Teamwork Amongst Unlikely Allies. The plan to rescue the dogs involves Mr. Shark dressing up as a lady to distract the guard, and despite the challenges and the unorthodox approach, the team works together to achieve their goal. Although they are still rough around the edges, the mission, much larger in scope than rescuing a cat, is a success. This collaboration, although unconventional, demonstrates the power of teamwork and the importance of combining strengths to overcome obstacles. The mission’s accomplishment serves as more evidence that, when united, even the most unlikely allies can achieve remarkable feats. In the closing scene, the characters are encouraged by their success and reflect on how good they feel, illustrating their continued commitment to growing into their new roles as good guys.
