Ian researches the Owens family in Cat’s Library and finds an account of Hannah’s trial. He takes it to the inn and shows Vincent that Hannah was literate; she could sign her name. This is surprising given her socioeconomic background. Ian asks about the other Owenses, and Vincent tells him that they went to Tom’s house. Ian commandeers Matt’s taxi and takes Vincent to Tom’s house, where Gillian, Sally, and Franny are trying to break in. There, Vincent thinks about his own experiences with left-handed magic and empathizes with Kylie. He says Kylie might be able to break the curse. Franny remembers Jet telling her that she (Franny) could do it, and realizes that Jet was talking about breaking the curse.
Ian shows them what he found in the library. In addition to the account of Hannah’s trial, he photocopied My Life as a Witch for them. Franny suggests that Ian make his next book about the “lives of the witches in Essex” (295). Ian, who didn’t know what to do after finishing the final edits on his current book, kisses Franny in gratitude. She laughs and kisses him on the cheek. In the house, Franny and Vincent see ingredients for a left-handed spell on the table.
