Plot Summary

The third and final installment in the Scholomance trilogy picks up in the seconds after Orion Lake, a wizard with the rare ability to pull mana (magical energy) from maleficaria (monsters that prey on wizards), shoves the narrator, Galadriel "El" Higgins, out through the gates of the Scholomance, a magically constructed school that shelters wizard children from mals. Orion stays behind to face Patience, a colossal maw-mouth, a type of monster that devours wizards and keeps them alive in endless torment inside its body. El lands in a clearing in Wales, where her mother, Gwen, waits. She tries every spell she can to get back inside the school, which she and her classmates have just broken off from the real world and cast into the void, a formless dimension outside reality. Nothing works. The school is gone, and Orion with it.

El spends days paralyzed by grief at her mother's commune. She cannot mourn Orion as dead because maw-mouth victims remain conscious, endlessly devoured. When El takes out the Golden Stone sutras, an ancient Sanskrit spellbook for building enclaves (sheltered pocket dimensions where wizard families live safe from mals) without malia (stolen life-force that generates maleficaria), Mum breaks down. She confesses that she and El's father, Arjun Sharma, summoned the sutras from inside the Scholomance years ago, leaving the payment open. The price was exacted across their lives: Arjun was consumed by a maw-mouth, Mum escaped alone and pregnant, and El was born burdened with destructive power and a prophecy of doom.

Liesel, the Scholomance's valedictorian and a new London enclaver, arrives with urgent news: An unknown maleficer (a wizard who uses stolen life-force) has been attacking enclaves worldwide, and a maw-mouth has broken through London's damaged wards. Alfie, a fellow London enclaver who swears a magical oath to repay El, helps bring her to London. El is awed by the enclave's fairy-tale gardens but recognizes that such splendor requires malia to sustain. She pursues the maw-mouth and, in a burst of rage, invents a new killing spell that disintegrates it instantly. As payment, El demands the enclave open its gardens to all wizards. When a council faction tries to trap her with a compulsion spell, she escapes through forgotten half-real spaces beneath the enclave with Yancy, a rogue wizard whose crew lives in these remnants. Yancy's explanation of how discarded spaces persist in the void gives El a critical realization: The Scholomance may still be reachable.

El flies to New York to seek mana and the Scholomance doors' location from Orion's parents. His father, Balthasar, an artificer (a wizard who crafts magical devices), assumes El is angling for an enclave seat. She erupts in fury, explaining she wants only to kill Patience and end the torment of everyone inside. Balthasar breaks down, stunned that someone truly loved his son. At the family flat, El meets Orion's mother, Ophelia, and instantly recognizes her as a maleficer who destroyed her own capacity for clean mana to work exclusively with malia. Ophelia offers El a power-sharer linked to New York's mana store and coordinates to the Scholomance doors in Sintra, Portugal. El takes the box, knowing it is the only way to reach Orion.

At Sintra, El enters the dying Scholomance with Aadhya, her close friend and fellow graduate, and Liesel. The school is cold, silent, and crumbling; every mal that had been trapped inside is gone. In the gymnasium, they find Orion sitting in a pavilion, apparently whole, but when he sees them, he advances with the blank calculation of a predator. His touch against El's shield feels exactly like a maw-mouth probing for entry. She threatens him with a pry bar and he stops, haltingly speaking her name. Using an obfuscation pendant, they lead him back to Wales.

Mum takes Orion to an ancient roundhouse deep in the forest, a place of healing power sheltered by a massive yew tree. After a night of brilliant light that exhausts the yew and nearly kills Mum, Orion emerges as himself, but devastated. Mum tells El she could not truly heal him; she could only give him hope. Whatever Ophelia did is part of Orion himself. El and Orion slowly reconnect, and El resolves to build a Golden Stone enclave, but a crisis intervenes. Liu, another close friend from the Scholomance, is trapped under a compulsion of secrecy tied to spells her family received from Beijing enclave. El and Orion fly to Beijing, where El discovers the horrifying truth: Enclaves are founded by crushing a living wizard into a maw-mouth as an anchor point in the void. Liu is strapped inside a metal cylinder, being slowly pressed down to become Beijing's new foundation. El turns the council members to stone, tears down the wall hiding the wider assembly of contributing wizards, and reveals what is being done. She performs the Golden Stone foundation casting as the enclave teeters on collapse, and Liu is pulled out alive. When council members attack the exhausted El, Orion intervenes, but the attackers simply vanish into him.

At the airport, Orion confesses: He has never killed maleficaria but devoured them, absorbing everything they were, just like a maw-mouth. Ophelia fused a maw-mouth into him as an infant, creating a wizard connected directly to the void who could devour mals and channel stolen mana back to New York. He consumed Patience and all its centuries of victims, who remain inside him. He asks El to let him go to Ophelia, the only person who might undo what she did, and kisses her goodbye.

El saves Dubai enclave using the Golden Stone method, then travels to her father's family compound outside Mumbai, where she confronts her great-grandmother Deepthi, Mumbai's prophetic seer-leader, whose prophecy has shadowed El's entire life. Deepthi reveals the prophecy was deliberately shaped to hide El from Ophelia, who had been searching for a counterbalance to the weapon she made in Orion. Deepthi also reveals that Ophelia engineered the infamous year when no students survived Scholomance graduation, sacrificing an entire class to create Orion. She warns El never to return to New York.

An enclave war erupts at the Scholomance doors in Sintra. Li Shanfeng, the Dominus (ruler) of Shanghai enclave, reveals his parallel history with Ophelia: Both spent decades building enclaves and sending the resulting maw-mouths to each other's territories, locked in an arms race neither could end. He offers El all of Shanghai's saved mana. Ophelia arrives with Orion, intending to demonstrate his power and terrorize every enclave into submission. Orion sees El, deliberately releases the hope Mum gave him, and lets the maw-mouth take over, devouring wizards.

El throws up a shield across the cavern, but Orion pushes through. His face breaks the surface and he says, "El. Please," asking her to end his suffering. With Aadhya and Liu at her side, El opens the sutras and takes hold of Orion. She fuses her killing spell, the sutras' plea for golden shelter, and the Scholomance's founding promise into a single working. Wizards from both sides join the chain, pouring mana in. The devoured lives are released, the stolen mana drains away, and golden light fills every fracture, replacing the old maw-mouth foundations with a new golden one. Orion gasps and says, "I'll stay."

In the aftermath, El gives the sutras to her father's family along with a casting method developed by Liu that allows a chorus of strict-mana casters (wizards who refuse malia) to perform the foundation spell without her. She accepts her life's work: hunting the maw-mouths beneath every enclave, destroying them one by one, forcing each to open its doors or fall. Deepthi's family provides advance warnings; Liesel coordinates a global network from London. Orion remains in the rebuilt Scholomance as its guardian, planning to join El each summer. They sit together in the gymnasium pavilion, among fruit trees and birdsong, and El admits it is, actually, "a bit nice."
