The Good Girl Effect is the first title in Sara Cate’s Salacious Legacy series. Although it is its own fictional saga, the Salacious Legacy series is “a second-generation series that takes place twenty-five years after the events of Salacious Players’ Club” (ix). The Salacious Players’ Club series includes the titles Praise (2022), Eyes on Me (2022), Give Me More (2022), Mercy (2022), Highest Bidder (2023), and Madame (2023). These books are set in a prestigious sex club and trace the lives and relationships of the characters involved in it. The main Salacious Players’ Club characters are all tangentially related to the main characters featured in the Salacious Legacy titles. For example, Salacious Players’ follows Eden, Jade, and Clay St. Claire (who are Jack St. Claire’s parents), Ronan and Daisy Kade (who are Julian Kade and Amelia’s parents), and Hunter, Drake, and Isabel Scott (who are Phoenix’s parents), among others. As Cate writes in her Author’s Note at the start of The Good Girl Effect, the Salacious Legacy novels “feature some familiar faces and will reference events in the original series, but this is an entirely new series and can be read on its own” (ix).
As the first instalment in the series, The Good Girl Effects establishes the parameters of the overarching Salacious Legacy narrative universe. The novel traces Jack St. Claire’s taboo relationship with his daughter’s nanny, Camille Aubert, while he works to revitalize his parents’ former sex club. Using flashbacks and dialogue, the novel alludes to Jack’s complex family history and the importance of their businesses to their reputation, family culture, and sense of self. The Good Girl Effect explores themes that recur across Cate’s work, including self-discovery, experimentation, and vulnerability. This title also introduces the reader to Jack’s complex relationship with Julian Kade, the son of Jack’s godfather and the protagonist in the series’s second title, The Rule of Three.
Slated for release in May of 2026, The Rule of Three follows Julian Kade’s story. Julian is caught up in his own misery until he sparks two unlikely connections on a broken Paris elevator. When the elevator gets stuck, Julian strikes up conversations with the people trapped alongside him: a chef named Freya Kapoor and a street fighter named Archer Wilde. The three find themselves sharing the intimate details of their lives and form a connection that transcends their entrapment. The three unlikely characters pursue a ménage à trois in the wake of their meeting, delving into new sexual and emotional territories. The series’s third title, The Daddy’s Girl, will flesh out the Salacious Legacy world and is set to be released in September 2026.
Like the Salacious Players’ Club books, the Salacious Legacy novels feature themes and depictions of BDSM practices and other forms of kink. Cate presents these sexual habits as a form of experimentation and play rather than subjugation or humiliation. This differentiates it from other dark romance novels such as Rina Kent’s Beautiful Venom (2025), Parker S. Huntington and L. J. Shen’s My Dark Romeo (2023), and Brynne Weaver’s Butcher & Blackbird (2023), which have been criticized for blurring the boundaries between consensual kink and nonconsensual sexual violence.
