The Remnant Chronicles is a New York Times bestselling series. The Kiss of Deception serves as the foundation of Mary E. Pearson’s literary universe. Its prequel, Morrighan: The Beginnings of the Remnant Universe details the background and history which led to the events in the trilogy. The Kiss of Deception introduces the political, cultural, and religious structures that shape the series and the Remnant world. It establishes the central conflict between personal autonomy and inherited duty through Princess Lia’s decision to flee an arranged marriage. Her rebellion against tradition is the catalyst for the tensions that drive the subsequent novels, The Heart of Betrayal, which takes place during Lia and Rafe’s captivity, and The Beauty of Darkness, which sees Lia finally return home to assume her obligations.
Within the trilogy, The Kiss of Deception functions as a narrative of awakening and an introduction to the series’s major players. Lia’s journey begins in isolation and without a clear destiny, and ends on a cliffhanger as both Lia and the prince she loves are taken captive. The introduction of Venda and their traditions, along with stories of the Ancients, lays the groundwork for the darker, more complex conflicts explored later in the series. While the first book emphasizes building identity and the threat of deception, the later novels explore truth and leadership on a larger scale. In the context of the wider Remnant Chronicles, including prequel novels such as Morrighan and Dance of Thieves, The Kiss of Deception acts as the foundation for the universe and the series’s themes.
The Kiss of Deception combines two popular young adult genres, romance and dystopian fiction, to create a unique world. The story is set in the distant future on the land which was once the United States, with pervasive remnants of the former technological world. The setting also engages with common medieval ideas, lifestyles, and concepts. In this, it owes a debt to the Dune series by Frank Herbert, which does something similar. The books take place in a future where interstellar travel mixes with sword fights and feudalism. However, where Dune presents a vast political and ecological system driven by power and survival, The Kiss of Deception focuses on personal identity and choice. The novel briefly questions whether past technologies were the result of magic or intelligence, a question it shares with The Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence.
The idea of a world reverting to older ways entertains both fears and fantasies. In young adult literature, the blending of futuristic and medieval elements reflects the tension many young readers feel between tradition and progress, thus capturing a common experience using surreal elements.
